Noah enters Linwick territory under Vermil's identity, deceives the family head into believing a demon controls Vermil's body, and drives Dayton away while learning more about the destruction of Todd and Isabel's families. After surviving an arranged inquisitor attack, he returns to Arbitage and takes Todd, Isabel, and Emily through intensive wilderness training with Moxie and Lee. Noah reaches rank three, creates Fragment of Renewal, and begins healing Lee's damaged soul, but this draws Renewal's attention and restores Azel, a rank-five demon bound inside him. At the final survival exam, an Evergreen replica is exposed as the tool of an unknown saboteur. Todd, Isabel, Emily, and James reveal their rank-two advancement, take Eline's tokens, and pass. Revin makes the defeated Eline his bound trainee, while Moxie receives a two-month leave and joins Noah and Lee for the break.

Previously: Noah Vines awoke in the body of the dead magus Vermil and continued using Vermil's identity at Arbitage. As a professor, he took responsibility for Todd and Isabel, students disadvantaged by the academy's noble hierarchy. His unusual return from death and the rune Sunder let him dismantle and recombine runes in ways other mages could not. Lee became his close companion and co-operator, while Moxie emerged as a trusted fellow professor. Noah's conflicts at Arbitage included the death of a Hellreaver, an event that left official attention focused on Vermil. By the start of this volume, Noah's true identity, his repeated revivals, and Lee's nature all remain secrets that could endanger the group.

Noah enters the Linwick estate with Brayden, Lee, Todd, and Isabel while Dayton challenges the local family head. In private, Noah tells Father that Vermil died during a demon summoning and that a demon called Spider now uses his body. Lee copies Noah's form, and Noah allows Father to kill him before returning in a replacement body, making the multiple-body deception credible. Father grants limited rune information but continues testing the supposed demon with poison and surveillance. Todd and Isabel each receive an armor rune, then secretly watch Dayton because of harm he caused their families. Lee rescues them from Dayton's guard. Father subsequently commissions Spider to make Dayton flee or die without implicating the Linwick branch. Noah accepts, both to gain knowledge and to keep Father from destroying Dayton's entire household.

Noah intimidates Dayton through staged deaths, impossible returns, and Lee's public impersonation of him. Dayton concludes that an immortal demon serves Magus Evergreen and surrenders his grimoire before fleeing the estate. Father accepts the result while continuing to investigate Noah's weakness. From the stolen material, Noah uses Sunder to create Focal Quake and retains several valuable runes connected to Evergreen. Todd and Isabel then explain their shared history. Their allied noble families were destroyed after Isabel's father found a master rune and refused to surrender it. Their parents were killed, the surviving children lost the right to use their surnames, and the missing master rune was never recovered. Dayton was among those who pursued Isabel's father, confirming why both students want eventual revenge.

Father secretly arranges for inquisitors to kill Noah’s party on the road back to Arbitage. Johan traps Noah, Lee, Todd, and Isabel with anti-demon magic while Inaros intercepts Brayden. The students defend Noah and Lee, and the separated fights become deadly. Johan kills Noah, but Noah briefly pulls his soul back into his body and kills Johan before dying again. Brayden drives Inaros away, and Noah later regenerates from his gourd. Lee then explains that she is the source of Noah’s supposed duplicate bodies. Brayden, Todd, and Isabel learn enough of the truth to understand that the person they know is not the original Vermil and can revive after death. The group survives and returns toward Arbitage, but Father’s involvement in the attack cannot yet be proved, and the official inquiry into the Hellreaver remains another danger to Noah’s cover.

Noah spends weeks unconscious after the inquisitor attack while Moxie guards him and trains the students with Lee. A failed rune-forming attempt unexpectedly restores Noah's damaged soul and draws the attention of immense powers searching for mortals touched by the divine. Soon after waking, Noah confronts Contessa, a Torrin operative controlling Moxie. He binds Contessa to secrecy, forces her to report through Moxie, and tells Moxie that Vermil is dead and Noah occupies his body. He also reveals that Sunder lets him break down and rebuild runes. Moxie accepts him as a friend despite having once reported on Vermil. Noah promises that, after growing stronger, he can repair flawed runes belonging to Moxie and Lee. The professors then plan an off-campus program to prepare Todd, Isabel, and Emily for the survival exam, subject to Neir granting Noah permission to leave Arbitage.

Neir permits the group to leave Arbitage for a month. Noah, Moxie, and Lee take Todd, Isabel, and Emily to the Vibrant Woods, where their first battles expose poor teamwork. Todd and Isabel crowd Emily out of their plans, while Emily's slow but powerful ice attacks need protection and clear firing space. The instructors stage a dangerous gorilla encounter that forces all three students to cooperate: Isabel absorbs its lightning, Todd carries Emily to safety, and Emily kills it with a charged shot. The students acknowledge one another's strengths and begin training as a unit. Moxie then pushes them through exhaustion and energy-control drills before beginning an overnight exercise in which the depleted students must evade her until morning.

The students complete Moxie's pursuit exercise and continue developing better coordination. Revin and his student James are also training in the Vibrant Woods, and Revin becomes interested in Noah's group. A highly intelligent shadow-moving monster begins stalking the travelers and threatens the students to force a confrontation. Noah draws it away and, with Lee waiting in concealment, kills it. Sunder releases powerful runes from the corpse. Lee tears out two of her own runes to absorb a pair of Umbral Body runes, causing severe soul damage and leaving her unconscious. The group carries her out of the woods and redirects its journey toward the Red Barrens. Ordinary medicine cannot restore her soul, but Noah tells Moxie that his earlier failed rune formation healed similar damage. He begins considering how to reproduce that effect safely for Lee.

Lee wakes but remains weakened, while Noah searches for the final components of a coherent rank-three path. In the Red Barrens he studies the local monsters and chooses a natural-disaster theme rather than advancing through a wasteful shortcut. Garina separately demonstrates why rank-seven mages are absent from the Arbalest Empire: she effortlessly defeats a newly advanced rank seven and orders him to leave. She also asks about someone who cannot remain dead. Noah uses runes taken from Dayton's grimoire to create Deafening Thunderstorm and rebuild his water and fire components. With seven rank-two runes prepared, he begins the student-led desert phase. Todd shows exceptional imbuement knowledge by helping the others adapt to sand, but his damaged neck continues to limit his combat role.

Revin deliberately draws dangerous monsters to the students' camp and throws James into the defense, forcing Noah, Moxie, and the four students into separate battles. Everyone survives, but Revin's interest in Noah and the survival exam remains unexplained. Todd develops a brief workaround for his neck injury by maintaining several body imbuements at once. In Grey Barrow, Noah fills his runes and combines them into Natural Disaster, reaching rank three. Contessa arrives with orders showing that Magus Evergreen intends to test Moxie's loyalty through Emily's performance. A supposed Torrin student named Bria attacks Noah and escapes. The attacker is then revealed as Karina, a rank-three Linwick and Vermil's arranged fiancée. Her father refuses to release her from the marriage and keeps her constrained by a rune oath.

Noah tests Natural Disaster, then deliberately dies to recreate the force that once healed his soul. He forms Fragment of Renewal despite resistance from an immense presence. Renewal recognizes that a mortal has taken part of her power and begins searching for him discreetly. The rune successfully starts repairing Lee's soul, though its capacity is limited and its existence must remain secret. Back at Arbitage, Karina reveals herself and seeks Noah's help ending her engagement. She warns that the real Eline and her rank-four trainer Garrick may threaten the students and Moxie. In exchange for possible help with the marriage and the students' blacklist, Karina accepts a temporary protective oath. James joins Todd, Isabel, and Emily's exam team. Revin diverts Garrick's demon detection toward his transplanted demon eye, then wagers that James will pass while Eline fails. Tenfort sends the teams into Snowfield for the final survival exam.

The Snowfield exam requires each student to survive seven days and return with a token from a marked monster. While the students fight repeated attacks, Noah challenges the woman appearing as Magus Evergreen over her treatment of Moxie. Noah's anger releases a rank-five demon from his soul. The demon claims the original Vermil summoned him and that Noah's healing restored his fragmented soul. Noah discovers that their souls share a fold that cannot be severed without destroying both of them, and forces the demon back inside by threatening mutual ruin. The apparent Evergreen proves powerless without her staff and is exposed as a replica rather than the real mage. In Noah's mind, the demon gives his name as Azel and admits to nudging Noah's emotions. Azel identifies the replica as a powerful formation and recommends destroying its staff to erase what it has learned.

Eline steals supplies and tokens from other teams while Isabel's group withstands a prolonged siege without encountering any marked monsters. Noah and Moxie conclude that someone is engineering their failure. Revin deciphers the Evergreen replica's staff and learns that an unknown party hijacked the construct to sabotage Emily's team and distract the real Evergreen from events at Arbitage. The controller briefly speaks through the construct and proposes a meeting without explaining its purpose. Revin destroys and rebuilds the replica, removing its acquired memories, and the group restores the appearance that nothing happened. The saboteur's identity and larger objective remain unknown, while the students still lack the four tokens needed to pass.

Ferdinand of the Great Church of Repose invades the exam grounds and defeats Tenfort, prompting an early end to the test. Garina intervenes under imperial law and shadows Ferdinand, preventing open Church interference while leaving his true mission concealed. Before the students are recalled, Karina attacks Eline and Isabel's team joins the fight. Todd, Isabel, Emily, and James reveal that they reached rank two during their Grey Barrow training. They defeat Eline, take four of her stolen tokens, and all pass. The real Magus Evergreen accepts Emily's performance and grants Moxie two months of leave. Revin invokes his wager but spares Eline, binding her with a shadow chain and taking her as a trainee who may eventually earn freedom. Todd and Isabel plan independent training, Emily will train with James, and Noah, Moxie, and Lee will spend the break together. Azel remains contained inside Noah, while the exam sabotage, Renewal's search, the Church's interest, and the Linwick conflict remain open.

Todd, Isabel, Emily, and James pass the Snowfield survival exam after revealing that they reached rank two during their training. Eline fails, but Revin spares her and makes her his shadow-bound trainee, with freedom possible only after she grows strong enough. The real Magus Evergreen accepts Emily's result and gives Moxie two months away from tutoring. Noah, Moxie, and Lee plan to spend that break together, while the students separate for further training. Noah is now rank three and can use Fragment of Renewal to repair some of Lee's soul damage, but Azel remains contained inside his soul. The unknown force behind the exam sabotage and the hijacked Evergreen replica is still active. Renewal is searching for Noah, the Church of Repose has entered the Empire, and the Linwick plot, Karina's obligations, and Todd and Isabel's family grievances all remain unresolved.
