He protects a mixed class of human and demon students with Moxie and Lee, and his unusual powers include Sunder, a fragment associated with Renewal, resurrection through a gourd, and a sentient grimoire. His students include Isabel, Todd, Emily, James, and Alexandra, while Sticky and other demons have joined the group despite the danger posed by the Inquisition. Isabel's master rune has made her a target of noble interests. Noah has also reached rank five and carries a powerful but unstable rune tied to chaos. The group enters this volume with divided identities to maintain, students to strengthen, and enemies among both noble houses and greater supernatural powers.

So far this book: Noah appears as Spider at an advanced-track meeting while Karina impersonates Vermil. Their invented story claims that traitors in the noble houses are seeking ancient weapons, driving the houses into conflict before they can unite against Isabel. The lie gains accidental credibility when Janice, a real covert observer, escapes Fuyin's sealed domain. Elsewhere, Janice's superior, the artifact thief, mortally wounds Jalen and steals Long Night. Jalen reaches rank seven, summons Garina, and helps her resist the thief, but the thief proves to be a hidden rank seven and escapes with the artifact. Imperial law forces the scarred but surviving Jalen to leave the Arbalest Empire. After Moxie warns Noah, he accelerates the training of his human and demon students. He tests his new rank-five power in the Scorched Acres and learns that its central effect is unmaking, though he still lacks reliable control and does not know how well it can affect magic or runes.

Noah begins teaching the mixed class how personal patterns support formations, insisting that the demon students start with safe, nonmagical practice. Alexandra's sword pattern draws energy from the world around her. When she completes the pattern's deeper meaning of freedom, it creates a Fragment of Alexandra and badly damages her soul. Tillian, an Inquisitor of the Crimson Wake, asks a dangerous hidden figure for help investigating a surge of chaos connected to an old enemy. The figure travels to Arbitage with Tillian and a young Tauren trainee whose energy is exceptionally difficult to detect. He is revealed as Decras's expelled former eighth Apostle and has a hostile history with Garina. Garina nevertheless accepts his aid against the growing chaos problem. He leaves Tillian and the trainee under Noah's supervision, drawing Noah into the investigation. A demon student connected to the inquiry has disappeared because Jalen took her away while scouting beyond the Empire, although Noah does not know that. Noah trades limited information with Tillian and returns his attention to training. Moxie prepares to study Eternal Cycle within her mind space.

A coordinated cult attack strikes Noah's allies across Arbitage. The attackers call Spider a false Herald and claim their lethal tests will strengthen a true Herald. Moxie defeats intruders in her room, Yoru forms a moonlight arm to protect Tim, Mascot kills an attacker near Karina, and Alexandra survives a three-demon ambush. Noah's group prepares supplies, remains together, and plans for eventual escape, but an Apostle ferryman arrives to summon Noah before the Apostles.

Still weakened by the Night's Shadow, Noah enters the underground maze and bluffs Alice into treating him as a concealed expert even after she severs his arms. Carmen defeats Sin and allows Noah one token attack. Noah burns his body with Unstable Pandemonium, hides his soul from the contestants, reaches the bound prize, and shatters it with Sunder in full view of the Apostles. He lets the ruined body die after presenting the destruction as defiance of Kyle. The contest ends without a public winner. Back in Arbitage, Noah rebuilds Unstable Pandemonium as the flawless Keystone Rune Unraveling Disruption and moves well past the midpoint to rank six. Moxie, Lee, the students, Tim, the repaired demons, and Garina remain allied with him. Fuyin's planned Inquisitor operation is next, while the artifact thief, Long Night, the Night's Shadow, the Truth Seekers, hostile Apostles, noble pressure on Isabel, and Spider's hidden growth within Noah's divided soul all remain unresolved.
