Rikki-Tikki-Tavi recap

A flood carries the young mongoose Rikki-Tikki-Tavi into the garden of an English family in India. Teddy and his parents revive him and welcome him into their bungalow. Rikki soon meets Nag and Nagaina, a pair of cobras who want the family gone, and proves himself by killing a smaller snake that approaches Teddy. Warned that Nag has entered the house, Rikki attacks him in the bathroom, where Teddy's father shoots the cobra. Nagaina remains dangerous, and her hidden eggs are nearly ready to hatch. Rikki destroys most of them, then confronts her while she holds Teddy at her mercy. Using the last egg as a lure, he chases Nagaina into her burrow and kills her underground. With both cobras and their brood gone, the family and garden are safe, and Rikki settles into his role as their vigilant protector.

In the garden he meets the tailorbird Darzee and learns that the cobras Nag and Nagaina have killed one of Darzee's young. The snakes want the human family removed so they can dominate the garden. Rikki kills a smaller venomous snake that threatens Teddy, then learns that Nag has entered the bathroom to wait for Teddy's father. Rikki attacks Nag, and the father shoots the cobra. He next discovers that Nagaina has a clutch of eggs nearly ready to hatch. Helped by Darzee's wife, Rikki destroys all but one. When Nagaina corners Teddy at breakfast, Rikki displays the surviving egg and draws her away. She takes it and flees underground, with Rikki in pursuit. He returns alive after killing her in the burrow and ensuring the last egg cannot hatch. The household and garden celebrate, and Rikki remains with the family as their protector.

After killing Nag, Rikki learns that Nagaina's eggs are close to hatching. With help from Darzee's wife, he reaches the nest and destroys all but one egg. Nagaina is threatening Teddy at the family's breakfast table when Rikki arrives carrying the last egg. He uses it to draw her away from the boy, but she seizes it and escapes into her burrow. Rikki follows despite the danger of fighting a cobra underground. He eventually emerges and announces that Nagaina is dead and the egg will never hatch. The garden's animals celebrate the end of the cobra threat, while Rikki remains with Teddy's family and continues guarding the bungalow against snakes.
