Rise of a Merchant Prince recap

After surviving Novindus, Rupert Avery returns to Krondor and sets out to build a fortune while Erik stays with Calis's soldiers. Previously, in Shadow of a Dark Queen: Erik von Darkmoor killed his abusive half-brother while defending Rosalyn and fled Ravensburg with Rupert Avery. Captured and condemned, the two were secretly recruited into Calis's company and trained by Robert de Loungville for a reconnaissance mission in Novindus. Calis, the son of Tomas and the elven queen Aglaranna, carries human, elven, and Valheru inheritances into the generation after the Riftwar. His company found a continent being consumed by the Emerald Queen's forces: a disciplined host under Fadawah that included displaced humans, Pantathian serpent priests, Saaur warriors, and summoned demons. The expedition lost many of its members but escaped with proof that Novindus was being conquered to prepare an invasion of the Kingdom. Erik and Roo returned as veterans. Pug and Tomas, now elder guardians of a world they once saved at Sethanon, know that the new threat reaches beyond ordinary war, but the Emerald Queen's true nature and ultimate objective remain uncertain.
