In short (whole book)
Rise of the Living Forge 2 follows Arwin Tyrr, the presumed-dead former Hero of Lian, as he rebuilds his life in Milten as the masked smith Ifrit while racing a mesh Challenge that warns his class's hunger will kill him unless he masters it. He forges the dead Epic crystal he carries into a living bow, recruits the one-armed warrior Olive, and delves a spider-filled dungeon to grow stronger before a worm brood strikes. The brood proves to be the work of the Iron Hounds' leader, Jessen, who is breeding and controlling the monsters and culling his own guild for power. In a night ambush the group breaks his hold and Arwin kills him, freeing the horde. Naming their guild Menagerie, Arwin and Lillia finally become a couple and Olive joins for good. As the shop and tavern flourish, a merchant named Madiv recognizes Lillia as the former Demon Queen, and dealings with him get Menagerie blacklisted by a thief network. Reforging Jessen's armor into an Epic chestplate for the healer Anna, Arwin reaches Journeyman tier and collapses from exhaustion, caught by an unseen presence and found safe by Lillia. His closing thought finally names his true goal: to root out the corruption in the Adventurers' Guild's leadership.
Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)
Previously: Arwin Tyrr was the Hero of Lian, summoned from Earth as a child to fight a fifteen-year war and made to strike down the Demon Queen. A hidden gem in his own armor detonated at his moment of victory; the kingdom mourned him as dead, but he survived, cast into the remote city of Milten and reborn with a unique crafting class, the Living Forge, and a curse, the Hungering Maw, that forces him to consume magical items to live. Concluding the war was staged and both champions meant to die, he built a hidden life as the masked smith Ifrit and gathered a small guild: the street thief Reya, the warrior Rodrick, the healer Anna, and Lillia, the former Demon Queen now running a failing tavern, who became his ally and quiet love. When the rival Iron Hounds killed his young assistant Zeke, Arwin hunted down those responsible, killing three and deferring their dangerously strong leader, Jessen, under a truce. Clearing a remote dungeon, the guild revealed their true selves to one another, and Arwin claimed a dead, Epic-quality crystal, the Heart of the Devouring Prism. He also learned that the world's real scale of power dwarfs anything he was shown, and the mesh warned him with a formal Challenge: his class's hunger will kill him unless he masters it.
Story so far - through chapter 11 (this book)
Back in Milten after the dungeon, Arwin sets out to rebuild his burned smithy and his strength while a mesh Challenge warns that his class's hunger could kill him. Working as the masked smith Ifrit, he sells plain, non-magical armor at market with Reya's help and takes on a commission from Olive, a scarred, one-armed warrior who pays part now and promises the rest. He hires a blunt local mason, Ridley, to rebuild the smithy, and the strange drunkard of the haunted street returns the salvaged sword of his late assistant. Deciding the dead Epic crystal he carries is too dangerous to eat or ignore, Arwin resolves to forge it into a weapon so he can study it safely. He contends with the crystal's own will in a vision of endless hunger, forcing it to yield, then works it into a great bow. The finished weapon is Unique and Awoken, growing stronger with each kill and drawing on its wielder's own magic, but it is unstrung, unusable, and has only provisionally accepted him. Through it all, his nightly dinners with Lillia grow steadily warmer, though neither will name what is happening between them.
Story so far - through chapter 15 (this book)
With the bow forged, Arwin turns to money and preparation. A Merchants' Guild representative, Jake, calls at the tavern and lays out Milten's trade rules and licence fees, expecting both the tavern and the coming smithy to register once they operate. Rodrick and Reya scout the forest and report signs of two worms, likely a breeding pair, giving the group a rough timeline before a wormling brood could threaten Milten. Olive returns, having survived a hard dungeon run, and repays her debt in full with extra coin. Learning that Arwin's whole group can fight, she proposes a joint delve into the journeyman-tier dungeon she frequents, splitting the gold evenly, and the party agrees to build everyone's strength before the worms come. Arwin keeps selling armor and paying down the smithy's construction, which runs ahead of schedule. Meanwhile he and Lillia draw closer over their meals together, still leaving their feelings unspoken, and the tavern inches toward opening once it finally has a name.
Story so far - through chapter 22 (this book)
The party travels to a larger, journeyman-tier dungeon run by another guild and delves in together, Olive fighting alongside a group for the first time. They clear room after room of spiders, then a disguised centipede-like monster that nearly kills Arwin before they cooperatively tear its head off, earning a shared achievement and individual skill upgrades. Reya reveals a new ability: binding the essence of a slain monster to summon a temporary spectral copy of it. The odd tension Reya has shown toward Olive turns out to be a clumsy crush rather than any hidden threat, and Arwin quietly encourages her to speak to Olive directly. Pressing deeper toward a gated boss room, the group kills an ambushing predator, only for a much larger spider broodmother, swarming with young, to erupt from beneath it as the room's dormant spiders wake. With roughly six days left before they must move against the worm brood, the party is thrown straight into its hardest fight yet.
Story so far - through chapter 27 (this book)
The party brings down the broodmother in a desperate rush, Arwin devouring his own damaged greaves for speed and hurling Olive to land the killing blow, and everyone earns fresh advancement. Exploring a reshaped passage, they find murdered adventurers and are ambushed by two survivors who had turned on their own group for its gear; the party kills them. Beyond lies a workshop-like chamber with rivers of lava, where a hidden skill lets Arwin handle molten rock once his hand is wreathed in his own flame. Solving the room's puzzle opens a chest holding a fire-forged sword, along with rare volcanic ingredients and a sealed vial of portable magma. Rather than sell Olive the sword she plainly wants, Arwin tests her character by offering it in exchange for two months of dungeon-running as an equal, unpaid guild member, and she accepts, effectively joining the group. They seal the room, keep its key, and turn back toward the surface, their delve a success and their party one member larger.
Story so far - through chapter 33 (this book)
Back in Milten, the group prepares for the coming worm brood. Arwin has the harvested spider silk woven into a string for his bow and buys a bar of a rare, tough pale metal from the smith Taylor to reinforce his gear. Forging his own new greaves lifts him a tier and opens a class specialization, which he devotes to the Hungering Maw itself, hoping to master the curse driving his Challenge; he also gains a title that lets him smell the nature of an item's magic. His crafting grows more dangerous, too: an upgraded ability now lets any item he forges awaken an emergent trait, usually a harmful one, and the most potent materials fight his control as visions. Overcoming one such vision, he forges Rodrick a set of Awoken, water-themed greaves that bond permanently to him. He strings his crystal bow at last, though it still refuses to fully accept him and cannot be drawn without magical strength. With his equipment and skills advancing, Arwin races to finish arming the group before their planned strike at the end of the week.
Story so far - through chapter 43 (this book)
As the strike nears, Arwin completes Rodrick's water-themed armor set and pushes his craft further, discovering that setting aside the mesh's guidance and forging by pure intent yields far better work; this completes a milestone of his hunger Challenge, which the mesh then makes harder. He forges specialized bracelets and a test arrow for his bow. Lillia privately admits to herself that she loves him, and both silently resolve to say nothing until after the worms. The tavern is finally named the Devil's Den, leaning into the haunted street's reputation. On that street, an unseen, intangible figure kills an Iron Hounds scout, and it emerges that the guild's leader, Jessen, has grown volatile and paranoid, watching Arwin's old smithy. An unnatural cold grips Milten like an omen. Scouts spot the worms behaving strangely, as if tended rather than wild, and the party mobilizes early. Slipping through the night forest, they find the truth: Jessen himself stands between two grown worms, controlling an entire bred horde of wyrmlings, and is running a brutal culling of his own guild, feeding the weak and unwilling to the monsters to strengthen the survivors and himself. Realizing his control depends on concentration, the party readies a plan around Arwin's untested bow.
Story so far - through chapter 48 (this book)
The party springs its ambush. Olive walks openly through the enemy camp under Lillia's shadow-cover and cuts down Iron Hounds while imps and shadow-tendrils sow panic. Arwin's great arrow strikes Jessen and breaks his hold on the horde, and Arwin drops into the fight, raising his hammer at his enemy with a single word: four, counting the guilty. Jessen proves far stronger than his rank, unbothered by his own men's deaths, and reveals that he meant all along to have his worms kill every survivor so he could absorb the harvested power himself. He looses both grown worms; one, already dying from within of an unknown cause, collapses before it can kill Reya and Olive. Arwin, burning through his crafted bracelets for combat effects, is beaten down but refuses to yield. When Jessen finally closes in, Arwin traps and shatters his sword, reclaims a cursed dagger long secretly bound to his own power, and, with his last strength, clings to Jessen, turns himself superheated, and forces a vial of magma down his throat. Jessen dies as the molten rock consumes him from within. One grown worm still remains, loose and freed from his control, charging toward the rest of the party.
Story so far - through chapter 54 (this book)
The lone surviving worm flees the field after Reya, drawn to the first worm's corpse, digs out her own long-lost dagger from inside it; the blade, which had been killing the beast from within, awakens as a weapon bound to her that grows stronger with each kill, and the mesh sets her a Challenge of her own. Arwin gains a title for his endurance, loots Jessen's body, and the exhausted party harvests wyrmling scales and turns for home. On the walk back they finally name their guild: Menagerie. Unseen, a stranger watches them go. Back at the tavern, Arwin and Lillia, freed of the reason they had kept delaying, confess their feelings at the same moment and become a couple. Arwin invites Olive to join Menagerie for good and reveals to her that he is the smith Ifrit behind all their gear, though he and Lillia agree to keep her true nature hidden a while longer. His rebuilt smithy is finished at last. When talk turns to the mesh's Challenges, Olive's reaction shows she knows them firsthand, and she reluctantly begins to tell her story, having once accepted a mesh Challenge years earlier that she blames for the ruin of her old life.
Story so far - through chapter 63 (this book)
With the Iron Hounds broken, Menagerie rebuilds openly. Olive finishes telling her past: the Challenge she took years earlier crippled her in a dungeon fight, cost the life of a comrade, and saw her old group abandon her. Reya, increasingly drawn to her, quietly seeks advice about it. Arwin at last forges a purpose-built arrow for his bow, binding it into a matched set, and turns out stacks of armor to sell. Reya names his rebuilt shop the Infernal Armory, matching the guild's devilish branding, and his market days begin drawing real crowds and real coin. A secretive organization that scouts and ranks guilds announces a new dungeon near Milten, found using maps recovered from Jessen's old office; a key to its lower levels is missing, and Arwin privately suspects it is the unmarked black badge he took from Jessen's body. He registers his storefront with the Merchants' Guild through his contact Jake and asks about buying the whole haunted street. New customers arrive, among them the adventurer Vivian, who offers to connect Arwin with a merchant who can supply his metal. That night the merchant comes: a small, oddly mannered figure named Madiv with blood on his collar. Mid-conversation his eyes fall on Lillia, and without warning he drops to his knees, hails her as his queen, and reveals that he knows her as the former Demon Queen, shattering the secrecy the household has carefully kept.
Story so far - through chapter 71 (this book)
Madiv turns out to be a former soldier of Lillia's old army, wrongly banished and forced to rebuild his life as a merchant; recognizing his devotion, Lillia spares him, swears him to secrecy, and orders him to supply Arwin's smithy, and Arwin privately works out that Madiv is a vampire. Their metal deal set, Arwin pursues buying the haunted street, which requires Menagerie to become an officially registered guild. That forces a visit to the Adventurers' Guild, an organization the group has every reason to avoid. There a man named Charles, who once betrayed Reya's childhood street crew, delivers a coded warning: dealing with Madiv has gotten Menagerie blacklisted by a thief and information network. Arwin registers the guild anyway, refusing to abandon Madiv. Seeking a feather for a commission, he meets Esmerelda, an old shopkeeper who reacts with startling shock when he saves her from a small mishap. Finally, Arwin reforges Jessen's reclaimed armor into a chestplate for Anna. Pouring in his own magic to the point of collapse, he completes the Bleak Wind Chestplate, his first Epic-quality work, which lifts him to Journeyman tier. As he gives out, an unseen presence steadies him and lowers him gently, and Lillia finds him soon after, exhausted but unhurt. His last clear thought states his true aim for the first time: his growing strength is a step toward tearing the corruption out of the Adventurers' Guild's leadership. The book closes there, that reckoning still ahead.
How does it end? (ending)
The book ends quietly rather than in combat. Arwin has reached Journeyman tier and forged his first Epic-quality item, the Bleak Wind Chestplate, for the healer Anna, remade from the armor of the man he killed; he ends the book unconscious from magical exhaustion but safe, watched over by Lillia, holding a banked skill upgrade and an unused black badge suspected to be the key to a nearby dungeon. His guild, Menagerie, is now officially registered, with the tavern as its guild house and a co-leader seat left empty. Arwin and Lillia are openly a couple, her Demon Queen identity known to Olive and now to the merchant Madiv, who is sworn to her service and supplying the smithy. Reya carries a newly awakened weapon and a Challenge of her own, unspoken feelings for Olive, and a raw past dragged back up by her old betrayer Charles. Olive is a full member still owed two secrets: the group's history with the Adventurers' Guild and Madiv's true nature. Jessen and the Iron Hounds are gone, but new complications open: Menagerie has been blacklisted by a thief and information network over its dealings with Madiv; the shopkeeper Esmerelda's strange reaction to Arwin is unexplained; the long-promised dungeon delve never happens; and the haunted-street land purchase waits on money and paperwork. Above all, Arwin's newly stated goal, to tear the corruption out of the Adventurers' Guild's leadership, sets the course for what comes next.
