In short (whole book)

Rise of the Living Forge 3 follows Arwin Tyrr, the presumed-dead Hero of Lian, as he grows his craft and his guild, the Menagerie, in Milten while working behind a mask as the smith Ifrit. Using a looted key, the guild clears an unstable ranked dungeon, keeps its still-beating monster heart, and earns a public reputation and a place on the kingdom's guild rankings, drawing the rival Ardent Guild's attention and a flood of business. When a hunted noblewoman, Melissa Montibeau, takes refuge with them, Arwin forges her concealed armor and helps fight off the assassins pursuing her. Joined into a living device, the monster heart consumes and transforms his smithy into a sentient forge, which opens a portal to a dwarven master, Wallace Gentletongue. Wallace trains Arwin, uncovers his and Lillia's true identities, and keeps them secret; Arwin reaches Journeyman tier and chooses the risky Cursed Dwarven Smithing, forging his first cursed shield and knife. Rodrick and Anna are revealed as Melissa's secret protectors and confess their dark pasts, and are accepted. The book ends unresolved: a masked, immensely powerful figure named Twelve demands the dungeon heart within four days, tied to a guild called the Setting Sun that Arwin and Lillia recognize from their own hidden, more powerful past, and a Dawnseeker Guild representative arrives offering unexplained help.

Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)

Previously: Arwin Tyrr was the Hero of Lian, summoned from Earth as a child to fight a fifteen-year war and made to strike down the Demon Queen. A gem hidden in his own armor detonated at his moment of victory; the kingdom mourned him as dead, but he survived, cast into the remote city of Milten and reborn with a unique crafting class, the Living Forge, and a curse, the Hungering Maw, that forces him to consume magical items to live. Concluding the war had been staged and both champions meant to die, he built a hidden life as the masked smith Ifrit and gathered a small guild: the street thief Reya, the warrior Rodrick, the healer Anna, and Lillia, the former Demon Queen, also stripped of her power by the blast and now running a tavern, who became his ally and partner. When the rival Iron Hounds threatened Milten, Arwin killed their leader, Jessen, and looted a key from his body. He recruited the one-armed warrior Olive, forged living weapons and his first Epic-quality armor, and reached Journeyman tier. The guild, named Menagerie, registered around Lillia's tavern, the Devil's Den. A vampire merchant, Madiv, recognized Lillia as his former queen and became the guild's metal supplier, though dealing with him drew the hostility of the Ardent Guild's information network. By the end, Arwin had named his true aim: to root out the corruption in the Adventurer's Guild's leadership.

Story so far - through chapter 11 (this book)

After finishing an Epic chestplate for Anna, Arwin advances a tier and gains a magic-sensing skill, then leads the guild into a newly opened, unstable Milten dungeon using the badge-key he looted from Jessen. A Secret Eye representative, Selen, controls entry; Arwin humiliates a hostile Ardent Guild officer in a duel to gain admission. Inside, the dungeon sits dangerously close to a catastrophic 'break,' so the group commits to clearing it, fighting hobgoblins and monsters several tiers above their own. Reya lands a major kill, and Arwin's crystal bow reveals powerful new abilities and earns him a title. Along the way they rescue two adventurers and a struggling Ardent Guild team, learning the rival guild is delving the same dungeon. The party reaches a tower at the dungeon's heart, believed to hold whatever Jessen's key unlocks, and Arwin promises Olive he will finally explain what he really is once they are out.

Story so far - through chapter 16 (this book)

Inside the tower the group finds Jessen's hidden workshop and a monster stitched together from its remains; they destroy it, and Arwin keeps its still-beating heart as crafting material. Their clear officially ranks the dungeon and averts the break, and the Menagerie is publicly celebrated as first-clearers on an obelisk outside, ending their low profile. Back in Milten, Madiv delivers rare metal, and it emerges that his own past violence against an Ardent Guild warrior is what first drew that guild's hostility. Honoring his promise, Arwin tells Olive the whole truth: that he is the Hero of Lian and Lillia the former Demon Queen, both survivors of the staged war and the Adventurer's Guild's betrayal. Shaken but won over, Olive chooses to stay and keep the secret. Meanwhile Reya coaches the blunt, threatening Madiv to behave like an actual salesman ahead of the shop's grand opening.

Story so far - through chapter 22 (this book)

The Infernal Armory and Devil's Den open to overwhelming demand; Arwin forges armor through the night while Reya and Madiv sell it all, and a huge adventurer named Wanda becomes a repeat customer. Lillia shuts down a near-brawl with a startling show of force, then reveals a second, troubling Hearthkeeper power: anyone who eats or lodges at her tavern can be compelled to obey her, a power Arwin's mind-immunity makes him a safeguard against. The Merchants' Guild contact, Jake, warns that rival interests are trying to buy the guild's street out from under them; he had quietly placed a protective hold on the land at real personal risk, and Arwin's sales windfall should cover the cost. Lillia also gains a cooking specialization that infuses her food with temporary buffs. The guild settles into a busy, profitable rhythm.

Story so far - through chapter 29 (this book)

Arwin custom-fits armor for Wanda and works down his commission backlog, shifting toward fewer, higher-value pieces, and forges his first Epic-quality item from scratch, a pair of clawed gauntlets. A cutaway shows the Ardent Guild's leadership, guildmaster Tironal and spymaster Vorfen, stewing over their failed schemes against the Menagerie, including the blocked attempt to buy its street; Rodrick, it turns out, has been infiltrating their headquarters in disguise. When Arwin checks on the guild's registration at the Adventurer's Guild, it is rejected as over-qualified: Selen reveals the Secret Eye has instead placed the Menagerie on its kingdom-wide guild rankings, at the very bottom, rank 499. She warns him that a public ranking will draw dangerous rival attention going forward.

Story so far - through chapter 37 (this book)

Arwin reconnects with Esmerelda, an old curiosity-shop keeper whose gift for sensing greed leaves her convinced he is something inhuman; she attaches herself to the guild as a would-be supplier and, after fainting at the sight of Lillia and Madiv, quietly resolves to play along. Jake delivers the finalized deed to the guild's street. Arwin and Lillia begin a joint project to build a device powered by the monster heart from Jessen's dungeon, forging its first component together and earning a shared crafting achievement. Elsewhere in Milten, a sword-trained young noblewoman, Melissa Montibeau, is chased through the alleys by an assassin and saved at the last moment by the mysterious white-haired drunkard from the guild's street, only to collapse from a fast-acting poison.

Story so far - through chapter 44 (this book)

The drunkard carries the poisoned Melissa to the Devil's Den, where Anna and a magically buffed meal pull her through. Melissa explains her noble family was targeted after her father's death, and Arwin agrees to forge her concealed protective armor in exchange for future goodwill. A squad of professional assassins tracks her to the street; the guild, aided by the drunkard and Madiv, kills all eight, and Lillia protects Melissa inside the tavern. Expecting a stronger follow-up, Arwin delegates material-gathering to the guild rather than doing everything himself, and secretly hires two assassins, Lena and Riker, to attack him over three nights so he can field-test the new armor under real combat conditions, revealing the arrangement only when the test is done.

Story so far - through chapter 49 (this book)

Over six exhausting days the whole guild helps Arwin complete Melissa's five-piece armor, fully stat-concealed and able to self-destruct on his command; he and Lillia collapse from the effort. Arwin confirms he has climbed to Apprentice 8. Restored and equipped, Melissa departs alone to reclaim her family's holdings. In a cutaway, a masked, gray-haired enforcer of enormous power appears unbidden in Tironal's private chambers and conscripts the Ardent Guild's spy network to hunt Milten for an item tied to a missing 'trainee' of his, revealed to have been the late Jessen, an object said to magnify the desires of whatever it bonds to.

Story so far - through chapter 55 (this book)

Arwin and Lillia finish the heart-powered device, three Epic components joined into a set, but on assembly it bonds to them both and consumes the entire smithy, taking the building itself as its living body. Sharing a rare quiet night, Arwin tells Lillia about a cheerful comrade from his Hero days who hated killing and secretly saved wounded soldiers on both sides of the war before dying to save others; Lillia recognizes him from a revered demon-side legend. Rodrick reports the Ardent Guild's information network is badly compromised and its wider ambitions faltering. When the group finally opens the transformed smithy, they find it alive and intelligent: it has devoured Arwin's stockpiles, and it conjures a black-fire door and drops a key at his feet, deliberately directing him toward a specific old dungeon workshop.

Story so far - through chapter 65 (this book)

Arwin opens the smithy's black-fire door, and a powerful dwarven master smith, Wallace Gentletongue, steps through from his lava-lit workshop demanding answers. Startled to find a self-taught human using dwarven fire-craft, and horrified to learn Arwin built his living smithy around a 'dungeon heart,' Wallace resolves to judge whether Arwin is fit to be trained or must be destroyed. He takes Arwin as a temporary apprentice, teaching the fundamentals of working lava and harmonizing with a material's 'song.' Arwin masters the universal first half of dwarven smithing by his own unorthodox method, eating the lava, then accepts a piece of mithril to forge an item that will reveal his true character. Accepting it triggers a rare, high-stakes mesh Challenge that Wallace warns he cannot leave alive without completing, and Arwin learns such Challenges can be stolen, recasting Olive's own lost one in a new light.

Story so far - through chapter 75 (this book)

Arwin completes the mithril Challenge by forging with the sentient smithy itself as his partner, producing a small cursed band that reveals both deep compassion and an ocean of war-guilt in his soul. Reading it, Wallace deduces that Arwin is the vanished Hero of Lian and Lillia the former Demon Queen, then confesses his own secret: he has long, quietly traded with demons, having learned they are not the monsters he once believed. He passes Arwin's exam and agrees to keep his identity hidden. The mesh advances Arwin to Journeyman tier and offers a specialization; he chooses the risky path of Cursed Dwarven Smithing, along with a matching title, and gains a new skill. The arc closes as the guild, who had secretly staged an ambush in case Wallace turned violent, instead welcomes him to dinner.

Story so far - through chapter 83 (this book)

Melissa returns to reclaim her family's estate and is ambushed by hired assassins and the man behind her father's death; she kills that man herself, while a hidden ally thins the assassins until the contract against her is formally and permanently voided. That ally is revealed to be Rodrick in disguise, aided by Anna throwing poisoned daggers from the shadows, and the two, it emerges, are married. Back home they confess their full pasts to the guild: Anna was a Secret Eye Inquisitor forced to make poisons from childhood, and Rodrick a genuine paladin who infiltrated the organization, lost his holy class, and freed her. The Menagerie accepts them without conditions. Rodrick also reveals the citywide network of beggars and street children he has quietly been running as his own information service.

Story so far - through chapter 91 (this book)

Committing fully to cursed smithing, Arwin forges his first true cursed item, a shield built from the scale of a monstrous worm he once fought, won through a grueling forging vision that becomes a contest of will between him and the creature. The finished shield reflects a blocked blow back with amplified force, or turns on its wielder if no block lands. Meanwhile the Ardent Guild, crippled and desperate, is pressed by a masked figure hunting a 'dungeon heart.' That figure, Twelve, immensely powerful and impossible to read, comes to the Devil's Den and meets Rodrick, revealing he seeks the very heart fused into Arwin's smithy. He offers to destroy the Ardent Guild as payment for its return, sets a four-day deadline, and vanishes into black smoke.

Story so far - through chapter 95 (this book)

Arwin forges a second cursed item, a kitchen knife for Lillia, confirming Cursed Dwarven Smithing as a genuine, workable path. Esmerelda reveals that she too secretly deals in cursed items, has moved her shop building beside the smithy, and unilaterally declares herself a member of the Menagerie, a claim Arwin neither accepts nor rejects. Rodrick's intelligence ties Twelve to a guild called the Setting Sun, a name that visibly alarms Arwin and Lillia: they recognize it as connected to their own unexplained, more powerful past before an event they call the explosion, the first time either confirms they were once far stronger than they are now. With Twelve's four-day ultimatum for the dungeon heart still unanswered, the guild resolves only to gather more information and keep growing stronger. The book ends as a representative of the Dawnseeker Guild arrives unannounced at the tavern door and tells Arwin the two of them may be able to help each other.

How does it end? (ending)

Arwin ends the book alive and well, advanced to Journeyman tier and settled into his chosen path, Cursed Dwarven Smithing, having forged his first two cursed items: a shield built from a monstrous worm's scale and a kitchen knife for Lillia. The choice, once a gamble, is proven workable. He and Lillia remain openly together, and their transformed, sentient smithy is bonded to them both. No member of the Menagerie dies or is captured; every named guild member ends the book intact and in their established role. The guild is materially stronger than at the start: newly and barely ranked by the Secret Eye, informally backed by the restored Montibeau family, running an expanding tavern base, and holding two working cursed items plus an unofficial tie to the cursed-item dealer Esmerelda, whose true membership Arwin leaves undecided. Rodrick and Anna's dark pasts are known and accepted; the dwarven smith Wallace is a secret-keeping ally. The central threat is unresolved: Twelve, a masked figure far stronger than the Menagerie, has demanded the dungeon heart hidden inside Arwin's smithy within four days, and that deadline has not passed. Rodrick's intelligence has tied Twelve to a guild called the Setting Sun, a name Arwin and Lillia recognize from their own unexplained, more powerful past before an event they call the explosion, the first time either confirms they were once far stronger than they are now. The book closes as a representative of the Dawnseeker Guild arrives unannounced at the tavern and offers Arwin unexplained mutual help, leaving the Menagerie poised between two converging unknowns as book 4 opens.
