In short (whole book)
Rise of the Living Forge 4 follows Arwin Tyrr, the presumed-dead Hero of Lian, working as the masked smith Ifrit and leading the guild Menagerie from Lillia's tavern in Milten. To remove the threat of Twelve, a masked assassin tied to the Setting Sun, the guild clears a dungeon for its heart, then springs a trap: they disguise Twelve as a monster, wear his clone down, and use Anna's sympathetic poison to kill the real Twelve and all his bodies at once. Impressed, the Secret Eye invites the Menagerie into a tournament, the Adept Proving Grounds, paired with the struggling guild Phoenix Circle. As Arwin equips the teams and advances to Adept tier through soul-forging, new allies gather: Duke Aleric's children Art and Vix, and Kien, a renowned adventurer whose magic was stolen by his own brother Hein, now a tournament entrant. Arwin's hammer evolves into a powerful sentient weapon, and the organization Twelve served begins watching the guild. The book ends at the tournament's opening ceremony, with the first teams called into the arena and no match yet fought, every major thread carried into book 5.
Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)
Previously, across the earlier books: Arwin Tyrr, the presumed-dead Hero of Lian, survived the explosion that ended a secretly staged war and was cast into the remote city of Milten, reborn with the unique Living Forge crafting class and a curse, the Hungering Maw, that forces him to devour magical items. Working behind a mask as the smith Ifrit, he built a small guild, the Menagerie, around the tavern of Lillia, the former Demon Queen, who was likewise stripped of her power and now runs the Devil's Den. By the end of book 3 the guild included the thief-turned-Warden Reya, the fallen paladin Rodrick, the healer Anna, the one-armed warrior Olive, the vampire merchant Madiv, and the curiosity-shop dealer Esmerelda. Arwin had reached Journeyman tier, chosen the risky Cursed Dwarven Smithing path, and forged his first cursed items; his smithy had become the sentient Infernal Armory after consuming a monster's dungeon heart. Book 3 ended on two converging threats. A masked, immensely powerful figure named Twelve, tied to a guild called the Setting Sun, demanded that dungeon heart within four days, a name Arwin and Lillia recognized from their own hidden, more powerful past before the explosion. And a representative of the Dawnseekers guild arrived unannounced, offering unexplained mutual help.
Story so far - through chapter 12 (this book)
The Dawnseekers' representative, Raen, proposes a scheme: the Menagerie will covertly clear an uncleared dungeon using a stolen key and retrieve its dungeon heart, which the Dawnseekers will sell to Twelve to ruin the rival Ardent Guild, while Raen collects a personal commission for a magical item that can permanently alter a person's appearance. Arwin and Lillia agree. Guided by a young Dawnseekers warrior, Yonas, a six-person team clears the dungeon and defeats its boss, a corrupted tree, keeping the beating heart. Learning that Twelve is somehow tied to the late Jessen, whose arson once killed Arwin's young worker Zeke, the group refuses to hand the heart to anyone connected to him. Yonas covertly sides with them, agreeing to let the Menagerie keep the heart as a loan on one condition: they must deal with Twelve themselves within three days, since the Dawnseekers cannot risk opposing him openly. Twelve is assessed as an assassin at the bottom of the Expert tier, two tiers above Arwin and Lillia. Back home, Madiv and Esmerelda kill a man attempting to burn down the Devil's Den, finding an Ardent Guild badge on him. With a three-day countdown set, Arwin begins planning the gear and strategy needed to survive Twelve.
Story so far - through chapter 24 (this book)
The Menagerie spends its three days preparing. Arwin forges Olive a cursed replacement right arm from the defeated tree's wood, the Ashen Armament, winning a forging vision against the tree's lingering will; Olive, who lost her original arm years earlier, bonds with it. Rodrick's investigation delivers the key breakthrough: Twelve's name reflects an ability to project eleven advanced clones plus his true body, and the figure threatening Milten is only a clone, following preset commands and unable to be reinforced. Anna reveals she can brew a rare sympathetic poison that, applied to a dying clone, will kill the real Twelve through the magical link, at the cost of a year of her own life. Arwin repurposes Raen's commission into a two-piece cursed item that can permanently disguise its wearer as a monster, and he and Lillia install a second dungeon heart into the Devil's Den, bonding the tavern to Lillia as a powerful familiar that amplifies her demon-queen abilities within its walls. The plan is set: wear the clone down inside the empowered tavern, apply Anna's poison as it nears death, and disguise the body as an escaped monster for a public alibi. All preparations complete the night before the confrontation.
Story so far - through chapter 28 (this book)
When Twelve arrives to collect the heart, the Menagerie springs its trap: Lillia poisons the heart he handles, and a running battle fills the tavern, with Reya's restraints, Lillia's animated furniture, and the empowered Devil's Den slowing him. Arwin secretly clips the disguise item onto Twelve, permanently reshaping him into a monstrous demon before a crowd gathered for the tavern's reopening. In the street, the guild wears the disguised clone down; Olive's cursed arm drags him from his shadows, and Anna's poison finishes him. The kill propagates through the sympathetic link, destroying the real Twelve and all his bodies at once. Lillia frames the fight as an escaped monster the tavern was responsible for, apologizing with free food and turning public alarm into celebration, while the Infernal Armory consumes the evidence; Arwin gains an achievement letting him later claim the belongings of all twelve bodies. Impressed by the staged victory, the Secret Eye, through its observer Selen, invites the Menagerie to a tournament, the Adept Proving Grounds, not as fighters but as a crafting guild to be paired with a combat guild. Selen names the partner guild, Phoenix Circle, and says its representatives will arrive that night. The greatest threat is gone, and a new arc opens.
Story so far - through chapter 33 (this book)
Phoenix Circle's two representatives arrive: Elias, entirely wrapped in bandages and heavy clothing, and Maeve, a tall, masked, mute woman armed with daggers. Lillia privately warns Arwin that neither is human. Under questioning, Elias admits Phoenix Circle has fallen to last place in the rankings, lost its guild leader Norman about a year ago, and is down to just the two of them. Pressed by Lillia, Elias confirms he is undead, animated by necromancy his missing leader placed on him; he seeks a rare plant said to extend an undead creature's remaining time. The Menagerie does not care that he is undead or that Maeve is not human, and Arwin agrees to partner with Phoenix Circle for the tournament. Because tournament teams field three fighters and the Menagerie is a non-combat crafting guild, the Menagerie offers Olive as Phoenix Circle's third combatant, though she asks for time to decide. That night, her personal Challenge, tied to the loss of her original arm, abruptly reactivates, its terms not yet clear. The alliance is formed with the tournament still weeks away.
Story so far - through chapter 37 (this book)
While the Menagerie prepares, Raen returns to collect his commission and reveals its true purpose: the disguise item is for his wife, Monica, an orc who would be killed if seen openly in the city. Arwin instead crafts her a removable bracelet that lets her pass as human at will. In the distant city of Thornhelm, a new storyline opens around Duke Aleric's declining noble house. His son Art, a non-combatant with a malformed leg who gathers intelligence on illustrated cards, blames himself for rivals testing the family, believing he is seen as a weak heir. Art's sister Vix, the family's fighting strength, is dying of a wasting affliction with only a few years left, and has accepted the Secret Eye's invitation to the same Proving Grounds tournament as the family's last hope, both for a cure and for restoring their standing. The invitation carries one baffling condition: Art himself must be one of the three team members. A rival guild, Starforge, is confirmed responsible for wiping out most of the family's scout team. The Aleric family needs a third fighter and a strong showing to survive.
Story so far - through chapter 44 (this book)
A parallel subplot opens far from Milten. Hein, the embittered younger brother of the celebrated adventurer Kien, a Twin Blade and former solo tournament champion, has been manipulated for weeks by a hooded figure he calls Mask, who insists Kien's success has always come at Hein's expense. Mask supplies a special dagger and a tournament invitation in Hein's own name, urging him to kill his brother. Hein lures Kien into a cave and stabs him in the back; the blade punches through Kien's enchanted armor, and Hein feels an enormous surge of power flood into him. Mask's silent associates treat the killing as routine and move to dispose of the body, and a composed, unnamed man later receives the bloodied dagger and frames the killing as an experiment in extracting magical energy. But Kien is not dead: stripped of all his magic yet retaining pure combat instinct, he kills the disposal agent sent to finish him and is left alive, powerless, and grieving in the remote cave. Meanwhile Arwin completes an Epic chestpiece and gains a skill, Soul Guardian, whose required vessel he does not yet know how to build.
Story so far - through chapter 54 (this book)
Arwin completes the five-piece Ivory Executioner armor set, which unexpectedly assembles itself into a golden guardian figure, the very vessel his Soul Guardian skill needs, though it still lacks a core. He claims the belongings of all twelve of Twelve's bodies, discovering black-metal blades that absorb magical energy, a promising lead for that core. Elsewhere, Kien, still without magic, cuts through a band of bandits who cross him and continues toward Milten, single-mindedly searching for a healer. In Milten, Anna publicly destroys a rot infection by consuming the corrupted flesh with a purifying title, drawing crowds seeking cures. Olive trains hard with Elias and Maeve, whose combined technique is shown to rely on Maeve's true incorporeal, singing form and Elias's undead body, a combination too exposing to use in public. Art travels to Milten himself, ostensibly to ask Arwin about replacing his leg, but Rodrick secretly lifts one of Art's intelligence cards and confirms the danger: Art has deduced Arwin's true identity as the Hero of Lian.
Story so far - through chapter 59 (this book)
Rodrick reveals he has planted people around Duke Aleric's mansion and, more startlingly, that he personally hired the real assassins now threatening the Duke's life, purely as leverage he alone controls. He offers Vix, Art's sister, a trade: her family's safety in exchange for Art and Vix permanently burying what they have learned about Arwin's identity. Vix agrees, and Rodrick calls the assassins off. Committed to growing stronger for the tournament, Arwin studies the anti-magic black-metal swords taken from Twelve. Unable to unlock their secret by ordinary means, he eats one with his cursed Hungering Maw, which advances a hidden challenge governing the curse and triggers an unusual vision. Inside it he finds a weakened remnant of Twelve's soul bound into the blade. Arwin fights and questions it, learning the anti-magic property is a soul-imbued awakened-weapon effect created by an unnamed smith of great skill, not a trait of the metal itself. He has the remnant devoured, completing another milestone as his curse's hunger flares anew.
Story so far - through chapter 65 (this book)
Pursuing the awakened-weapon idea, Arwin works out how to imprint a person's soul into an item using a strand of hair as a sympathetic anchor, forging Reya a uniquely powerful bracer of a new Soul Forged category and finally understanding why so many of his creations turn out cursed: the harmony of a work's component songs determines whether it takes a detrimental trait. Applying the method, he pours forty continuous hours, aided by Lillia and the Infernal Armory, into forging a core for the golden Soul Guardian, feeling an unseen presence steady him whenever he nears collapse. Installing the core overwhelms him, and he wakes in a white void facing a personification of the mesh itself. The mesh explains the feat generated far more power than any normal item, enough to vault him past two skill milestones toward the Adept tier, and offers an unprecedented tailored reward. Arwin asks not to shield his allies himself but to let them protect themselves, accepting the risk that comes with real strength. The mesh advances him to Adept One, merges his skipped rewards, partly sates his curse, and grants a new title, Quest Giver, letting him assign difficult tasks that reward those who complete them.
Story so far - through chapter 71 (this book)
Arwin's class evolves into a soul-focused specialization offering dangerous Forbidden abilities; he chooses a soul-tempering passive and survives a trial that submerges his soul in burning lava, emerging able to manifest soul-lava from his own body. New skills let him bind equipment to summon at will, sense magical materials, and fuse himself and the Infernal Armory into a Soul Guardian to fight through it. Returning to the sealed smithy, he is confronted by the blue-eyed stranger long known on his street only as a harmless drunkard, who has entered without a door. The stranger names himself Koyu the Lost and reveals he is a centuries-old lich who has quietly guarded the street for roughly seven hundred years, the true source of local ghost rumors, and the unseen presence that helped forge the core. Koyu warns that the mesh has a hidden agenda and that the world itself is slowly starving, in terms echoing Arwin's own curse, and agrees to help in exchange for a body of his own. Through Koyu, Arwin realizes his Soul Guardian is effectively a new form of life outside the mesh's rules. In Milten, Art independently confirms Rodrick's assassination story and, with Vix, begins to suspect the Hero simply wants to escape the kingdom's war.
Story so far - through chapter 82 (this book)
The injured Kien reaches the Devil's Den, unreadable to the mesh, and reveals his brother stole his magic with an enchanted dagger and that the Adventurer's Guild then tried to have him killed, a pattern Arwin recognizes from what was done to him and Lillia. Rather than a mere weapon, Arwin uses his untested Quest Giver title to send Kien to defeat a monster alone and earn a new class. Art and Vix return, and Art burns his evidence of Arwin's identity, revealing the tournament's grand prize, an answered question from the Secret Eye, is his family's last hope of curing Vix's inherited heart condition. Kien joins Art and Vix as their third teammate, aligned by a shared enemy: Hein is competing in the tournament with Kien's stolen power. The Menagerie reveals its deepest secrets to these new allies, that its tavern staff are real non-humans, that Lillia is the former Demon Queen, and Arwin the Hero, and all pledge secrecy and support. Selen sets the sequestered tournament to open three days out, privately warning Arwin that a rival dwarven master smith is also competing and confirming that Hein has entered using Kien's stolen power.
Story so far - through chapter 91 (this book)
Arwin's hammer, once Verdant Inferno, fully evolves into a dramatically more powerful, wholly sentient weapon with its own name, roughly doubling his magical reserves. Far away, the numbered organization Twelve belonged to confirms his death by a rare soul poison and takes notice of the Menagerie: a young operative secretly observes Ifrit, witnessing Arwin's power and judging him dangerous but not hostile, and a figure who slips past all detection later questions him directly at the tavern. Kien completes Arwin's quest bare-handed, gaining a new class and receiving a soul-imprinted weapon that is, outwardly, a plain broom; the Montibeau family and the Dawnseekers jointly fund and equip Art and Vix's team. The whole group travels to the Proving Grounds, where Reya cons the Secret Eye into a spectator balcony so she and Arwin can watch. The book ends at the tournament's opening ceremony: the announcer notes the previous champion, whom Arwin privately knows to be Kien, has gone missing, explains the chaotic ten-team group-stage format, and calls the first teams into the arena. No match is shown. Twelve is dead; Arwin's hammer has become a powerful sentient weapon; Kien has a new class and his quest fulfilled; Art and Vix's team is funded and equipped. The Hein-Kien confrontation and the entire tournament outcome carry unresolved into book 5.
How does it end? (ending)
Book 4 closes at the exact opening of the Adept Proving Grounds, before any match is fought. Twelve is dead, killed by Anna's sympathetic poison, which has drawn the attention of the numbered organization he served: the Menagerie has been observed by a young operative who judged Arwin formidable but not hostile, and separately a figure who slipped past all detection questioned Arwin directly before leaving. Arwin ends the book at the height of his power to date: advanced to Adept tier with a soul-focused specialization, wielding a hammer that has evolved into a dramatically stronger sentient weapon, and having created a Soul Guardian that Koyu, a centuries-old lich now allied to him, calls a new form of life outside the mesh's rules. He attends the tournament only as a spectator, seated with Reya. Two teams carry the Menagerie's stake into the arena: Phoenix Circle's Olive, Elias, and Maeve, and the trio of Art, Vix, and Kien, funded by the Montibeau family and the Dawnseekers. Kien, stripped of his old magic, has earned a new class and an unusual soul-imprinted weapon, and means to find and kill his brother Hein, who is competing with Kien's stolen power. None of these confrontations occurs on the page. The tournament outcome, the Hein-Kien reckoning, Vix's hoped-for cure, the rival dwarven smith, the watching organization's next move, and the deeper mystery of the Setting Sun and Arwin and Lillia's own buried past all remain open as book 5 begins.
