In short (whole book)

The Menagerie strengthens its position in Milton through living creations, class sunsetting, and a planned high-value auction. Arwin gives the Infernal Armory a mobile body, uncovers the Adventurers Guild's system for harvesting magic, completes his own sunsetting, and transforms his body into a living forge. Lillia, Rodrick, and Koyu also sunset, while the guild creates an autonomous guardian for the Devil's Den and awakens the Mausoleum for Madiv. Thane leaves House Blacktongue, joins the Menagerie, and binds himself by contract to a violent weapon-devil. A vault raid supplies auction stock and helps secure Dwarven Council backing, though a rival faction attacks. Vix survives the replacement of her failing heart with a soul-forged core, and Rodrick deters the Council rival before the numbered story closes. Afterward, Maeve begins sunsetting as the auction nears and Arwin anticipates renewed Adventurers Guild attention.

Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)

Previously, across the earlier books: Arwin Tyrr, the presumed-dead Hero of Lian, survived the explosion that ended a secretly staged war and was cast into the remote city of Milten, reborn with the unique Living Forge crafting class and a curse, the Hungering Maw, that forces him to devour magic to live. Working behind the mask of the smith Ifrit, he built a guild, the Menagerie, around the tavern of Lillia, the former Demon Queen, likewise stripped of her power and now running the Devil's Den. Its members came to include the thief-turned-Warden Reya, the fallen paladin Rodrick, the healer Anna, the one-armed warrior Olive, the vampire merchant Madiv, and the curse-dealing shopkeeper Esmerelda. Arwin rose through the tiers, took up soul-forging, and bonded to a sentient smithy, the Infernal Armory, and an evolved living hammer. In book 5 the two teams he equipped fought through the Adept Proving Grounds tournament, and the rival smith Necrohammer was revealed as Phoenix Circle's vanished founder, Norman, who told Arwin the world's secret: the world is dying, the Adventurers Guild manufactures war to feed the Mesh with the deaths of summoned heroes, and he saved Arwin and Lillia to break that cycle. Back in Milten, Arwin allied loosely with the Setting Sun, learned soulmancy from the lich Koyu and the dwarf Wallace, began an armor to house the Infernal Armory, and cleared an expert dungeon to rescue the noble boy Thane. Book 5 ended when the Dwarven Councilwoman Indrana sent the warrior Gideon to kill Ifrit: Arwin's autonomous Soul Guardian golem overpowered him and Lillia captured him with shadow magic, setting up a direct confrontation with the Dwarven Council, with the planned infiltration of the Blacktongue party and the reckoning with the Adventurers Guild operative Mask still unexecuted.

Story so far - through chapter 10 (this book)

Lillia forces Indrana to end the Dwarven Council's pursuit of Ifrit and recruits Ida as an insider, leaving the immediate dwarven threat contained. Meanwhile, Arwin, Wallace, Koyu, and the Infernal Armory complete Gehenna the Dreadhusk, a legendary suit that serves as the awakened forge's mobile body. The Armory gains its own class, while Arwin chooses a soul-linking ability whose aura proves far more frightening than he expects. Vanessa arrives at the Devil's Den with a hostile message for Ifrit. Her attempt to test Arwin ends when her enhanced perception exposes her to his deathly aura and she collapses without him knowingly attacking. Rodrick concludes that Vanessa was sent as part of a setup connected to the Blacktongue gathering. Rather than release her, the Menagerie hires her to serve as a visible disruption while Rodrick gathers information. Arwin, Lillia, Rodrick, Esmerelda, Vanessa, and another guild member then leave Milton for the Blacktongue party, while Olive, Madiv, and the remaining defenders secure the street.

Story so far - through chapter 20 (this book)

House Blacktongue celebrates Drake as its heir while treating his twin Thane as expendable. Drake engineers a public duel that is meant to elevate him through Thane's defeat, but Arwin supplies Thane with Birthday Poker and Lightfinger. The weapons overcome Drake's equipment and lack of restraint, allowing Thane to win, renounce his house, and join the Menagerie. As Vanessa helps reshape the nobles' view of Thane, Rodrick infiltrates Blacktongue Manor under false identities. Arwin watches for Mask, an Adventurers Guild operative expected to place a magic-stealing dagger with a resentful Blacktongue son. He intercepts Mask and creates a public pretext for a duel. Once Esmerelda signals that the group's preparations are complete, Arwin equips Gehenna. Mask draws on red magic for speed and resistance, but his dagger cannot penetrate the living armor. Arwin defeats him, uses a potion to simulate his death, and removes both the captive and dagger while the party believes Mask died. The Menagerie now possesses a living witness and a weapon tied to the Guild's secret activity.

Story so far - through chapter 29 (this book)

While the party unfolds, a Blacktongue-paid reconnaissance team enters Menagerie territory in search of an alleged artifact. Olive's defenders capture the intruders and release them with a false lead about an expert dungeon, buying time and directing Blacktongue attention away from the real objective. Rodrick burns selected rooms in Blacktongue Manor to erase evidence of his infiltration, and the delegation returns with Thane, Mask, and the stolen dagger. Under interrogation, Mask reveals that the Adventurers Guild uses its daggers to drain magic and feeds them into a concealed pit beneath the Guild Wall. Arwin decides the Menagerie is not yet strong enough to investigate directly. He instead reports the discovery to Eleven, who takes him to meet Two of Setting Sun. Two explains that class sunsetting can realign accumulated power and says the mesh itself is dying. He also reveals that Blake spent years supplying intelligence from within the staged war before the Guild discovered and killed him. Arwin condemns Setting Sun's role in other deadly intelligence operations, but accepts continued cooperation and proceeds toward a second attempt to sunset his class.

Story so far - through chapter 39 (this book)

Two prepares Arwin for sunsetting at a ley line, but the expected agony barely affects him, likely because his earlier forced attempt already altered his soul. At Setting Sun's volcanic base, Arwin encounters the mesh directly. It explains that classes ration a dwindling reserve of magic and that completed sunsetting removes their deliberate restrictions. The mesh is willing to tolerate both the Adventurers Guild's harvesting plan and Arwin's alternative until a better path is proven. Arwin completes the process, integrating former achievements and abilities into a freer Living Forge class. He returns stronger and with direct control over future advancement. At the mesh's request, Lillia follows him into Setting Sun's process. Unlike Arwin, she suffers through the ley line, but reaches the necessary internal change and completes her ritual at the volcanic platform. Back in the Devil's Den, Lillia learns that customer satisfaction now creates power she can allocate to tavern improvements. Her handmade magical food and drink can retain their effects beyond the building, opening the possibility of a dungeon-delivery business and extending the Menagerie's reach beyond its street.

Story so far - through chapter 49 (this book)

Arwin learns from the mesh that Earth has no magic and that he cannot return, so he accepts the Menagerie as his home while remaining determined to stop further child summons. The guild agrees that future sunset candidates must understand the danger and volunteer. Rodrick is selected next, but must arrange his intelligence network before leaving. Lillia launches magical food delivery into dungeons, supported by a communication and tracking system forged by Arwin and Wallace. Demand quickly exceeds expectations because delivery workers repeatedly rescue customers from dangerous encounters. At the same time, Ida warns that the Dwarven Council is watching the planned auction house. Rodrick proposes using a private auction and the promise of vault goods to turn the Council against House Blacktongue. He then leaves with Eleven for prolonged sunsetting preparation. Arwin, Wallace, and Koyu begin designing a powerful guardian body for the Devil's Den. In Esmerelda's shop, a cursed obsidian axe reacts first to Vanessa and then to Thane. Vanessa refuses the bloodthirsty devil within it, but the manifested entity realizes Thane triggered its awakening and claims him as its chosen wielder.

Story so far - through chapter 60 (this book)

Thane refuses to submit to the weapon-devil and negotiates a binding contract that preserves control of his own body, though the exact terms remain private. The devil later consumes Lightfinger's magic and inhabits the sword, then begins teaching Thane to use his analytical gifts to influence outcomes. Thane insists on helping friends openly rather than manipulating them, prompting Lillia and Arwin to make time for shared forge work. Meanwhile, the prospective Devil's Den guardian receives a volatile core that must steep in Lillia's oven before its armor can be completed. Rodrick proves almost impossible for Two to prepare through conventional ordeals because he already possesses an extreme mental discipline developed through prior suffering. Two eventually accepts that he is ready. Arwin and Lillia jointly forge a concealed soul-armor core for Rodrick from night iron, his hair, and a color-shifting gemstone. As that work advances, Rodrick spends hours in the ley line and emerges standing despite intense pain. Two and Eleven take him onward to the final class-sunsetting stage, while his new armor awaits completion and his return.

Story so far - through chapter 69 (this book)

Arwin and Lillia finish Rodrick's thin soul armor, which can hide beneath clothing, alter the wearer's shape, repair itself, and adapt to other protection. The Menagerie then divides responsibilities for the vault operation and the deception meant to draw House Blacktongue into conflict with the Dwarven Council. Before the mission begins, Arwin, Lillia, Wallace, Koyu, the Infernal Armory, and the Devil's Den core join in an exhausting shared forge. They complete a massive armored body, and its core awakens as the Devil's Den's manifested soul. The new guardian is not property: she is an autonomous transcendent being who agrees to defend the Den by choice and will kill only when she believes it necessary. The creation grants Arwin enough power to reshape himself. With no class restrictions guiding him, he increases his capacity and changes his blood into soul magma, reinforcing his body to contain the heat. Art then takes command of the planned deception. Ida has seeded the necessary information, the auction house is nearly built, and the true vault team has roughly two days to retrieve treasure and return before its absence becomes suspicious.

Story so far - through chapter 79 (this book)

Arwin, Olive, Anna, and another Menagerie fighter follow a one-use key to a remote expert dungeon. After clearing its concealed undead, they open a hidden vault and confront an Expert Nine Golden Guardian powered by the treasure around it. Arwin's new body survives a devastating blow, and he summons Gehenna before crushing the guardian's head with Caldera. The group avoids a suspected greed trap by taking only portable magical objects and limited gold. At the same time, Art's decoy team carries fake treasure through a staged route. Blacktongue mercenaries attack, only to be killed by heavily armored dwarves from an apparent rogue Council faction. Rodrick, newly returned from successful sunsetting, uses his soul armor to impersonate Indrana and prevent the dwarves from seizing the decoy goods. An official Council delegation then reaches the Devil's Den. Lillia delays it until Arwin's real team returns and can prove the vault haul is genuine. The Menagerie secures formal Council backing and guards for the auction house in exchange for privileged access, with rare materials rather than gold serving as payment for VIP bids.

Story so far - through chapter 88 (this book)

The Council-backed auction is delayed for two weeks while the Menagerie completes preparations. Rodrick reveals that sunsetting changed his class into an infiltrator and that his new armor can reproduce humanoid forms. Koyu is chosen for the next sunsetting slot because an ordinary crafted body would not solve the binding that limits his freedom. Carrying a stone from Menagerie Street, he successfully passes through Eleven's portal. Arwin turns next to awakening the auction house and binds its heart apparatus to Madiv. During the preparations, Thane identifies an unnatural group in the crowd and discovers an attempt to abduct any available Menagerie member. He permits his weapon-devil to take partial control, killing two attackers while preserving one. The survivor's relevant memories have been removed, leaving the sponsor unknown. Rodrick tightens security but uses the continuing preparations as bait. Arwin, Lillia, and Olive install the completed apparatus and name the venue the Mausoleum. Its violent awakening proves to be deliberate reshaping rather than collapse. The living building preserves all useful spaces, ejects its creators gently, and waits for Madiv, who accepts it as his own domain.

Story so far - through chapter 94 (this book)

The awakened Mausoleum draws crowds and attention while Rodrick and Art watch for interference. Arwin prioritizes protection for Anna, whose role as the Menagerie's healer makes her an obvious target. Lillia completes another stage of her sunsetting and emerges with horns, heightened senses, faster reactions, and a living shadow, while her awareness of the Devil's Den expands across the growing street. Arwin, Wallace, and Vix use Anna's armor project to prepare Vix for the more dangerous work ahead. The completed soul-forged suit can protect and stabilize patients, store energy generated through healing, repair itself, and support Anna's emergency work. Vanessa, now employed by Esmerelda, continues sorting cursed weapons for the auction, while Madiv spends his time readying the Mausoleum. Vix defines the purpose of her replacement heart: she wants a deep energy reserve, sustained use of light and shadow, and freedom from constant magical rationing. After several failed designs, Arwin and Wallace settle on a core that gathers power from her body and surroundings. Vix accepts slower advancement as the price, and the surgical team prepares to begin.

Story so far - through chapter 100 (this book)

During his sunsetting, Koyu rejects an offered body and chooses a stronger, fully awakened lich form, intending to have Arwin and Wallace craft his eventual body. He returns in time to protect Ida from a black-armored dwarf seeking the Mausoleum's weakness. Meanwhile, Anna sustains Vix as Arwin and Wallace remove her scarred heart and implant the soul-forged core. The bond nearly fails, but Koyu urges Vix to accept the core as part of herself. It ignites successfully, and Vix survives, though Anna forbids her from using magic during recovery. Rodrick and Olive defeat additional dwarven attackers, and Rodrick searches a captive's thoughts to identify the rival Council member behind the operation. The faction hoped to weaken Indrana by disrupting the Menagerie's auction. Rodrick ends the immediate threat by showing the rival that he knows of the man's hidden son and can locate him, without directly threatening the child. The Menagerie closes the numbered story preparing layered auction security, including a staged deterrent for thieves. Its members remain alive, the Council rival is expected to stand down, and the auction is still approaching.

How does it end? (ending)

By the close, the Menagerie remains intact and has become a serious independent power in Milton. The Dwarven Council formally supports the coming auction, while Rodrick uses knowledge of a rival councilor's hidden son to end that faction's immediate interference. Lillia protects an enlarged living domain after completing her sunsetting, and Arwin continues building an alternative to the Adventurers Guild's magic-harvesting strategy. Koyu returns from sunsetting in a stronger lich form but still expects Arwin and Wallace to craft him a body. Vix survives her heart replacement and remains under Anna's restrictions while the new core stabilizes. Thane retains agency under his private contract with the weapon-devil, though control of its violence remains unfinished. Madiv and the awakened Mausoleum prepare for an auction only days away. The unknown sponsor of the attempted abductions remains unidentified, the Guild and dying mesh remain unresolved, and Maeve departs through a portal to begin her own sunsetting while Elias stays with the group.
