In short (whole book)

Arwin Tyrr, the Hero of Lian, kills the Demon Queen to end a staged fifteen-year war, only to survive a hidden bomb in his own armor and be reborn in the remote city of Milten with a unique crafting class, the Living Forge, and a curse that forces him to devour magical items to live. Building a hidden life as the masked smith Ifrit, he gathers a small guild - the thief Reya, the warrior Rodrick, the healer Anna, and Lillia, the depowered Demon Queen who runs a nearby tavern and slowly becomes his ally and love. Together they discover the war was engineered and that both champions were meant to die. When a rival guild, the Iron Hounds, firebombs his smithy and kills his young assistant Zeke, Arwin hunts down three of the four responsible, deferring only their dangerously strong leader, Jessen, under a truce. Clearing a remote dungeon, the guild reveals their true identities to one another, and Arwin claims a dead, Epic-quality crafting heart. He learns the world's true scale of power dwarfs anything he was shown, and the mesh warns him that his class's hunger will kill him unless he learns to control it.

Story so far - through chapter 10 (this book)

Arwin Tyrr, the Hero of Lian, strikes down the Demon Queen to end a fifteen-year war, only for a black gemstone hidden in his own armor to explode. The kingdom is told he died of his wounds and moves on, naming a new hero and reporting that a new Demon Queen already leads the horde's remnants. Arwin survives, thrown to the distant, half-abandoned city of Milten and reborn with a unique crafting class, the Living Forge, along with a curse called the Hungering Maw that forces him to eat magical items to stay alive. Concluding that the Adventurers' Guild which summoned him from Earth as a child engineered his death, he takes over a derelict smithy on a street locals call haunted and begins quietly rebuilding his strength. He falls in with Reya, a resourceful young street thief hunted by the local Thieves' Guild over a stolen key to a nearby dungeon, and defends her against the enforcers who come looking. He also meets Lillia, the shy, purple-skinned woman running a failing tavern on the same street. When the two finally speak plainly, Arwin realizes the truth: Lillia is the Demon Queen he supposedly killed, alive and hidden in Milten like him. Both are officially dead, and each recognizes the other.

Story so far - through chapter 18 (this book)

Arwin and Lillia settle into an uneasy silent truce, each declining to openly admit recognizing the other so both can keep their new, quieter lives. Arwin learns that the explosion left Lillia depowered as well, stripped of her old strength; she despises killing and wants nothing more than to run a peaceful tavern. He also discovers the reach of his new class: he can forge unique, magical items. When the Thieves' Guild moves against Reya in force over the stolen dungeon key, Arwin and Lillia join her in a one-time alliance. Rather than fight outright, they exploit the city's terror of demons - Lillia can still summon a lesser imp - to bluff and intimidate the guild's leader, Briggs. Cornered, Briggs backs down entirely, ceding the dungeon key, calling off the hunt for Reya, and surrendering the haunted street in exchange for being left in peace. With the immediate threat gone, Arwin, Reya, and Lillia are left as wary neighbors and allies, each guarding secrets, and Arwin begins thinking about building something more lasting in Milten.

Story so far - through chapter 22 (this book)

With the Thieves' Guild subdued, Arwin turns to rebuilding both his craft and his life. He improves his workshop, forges gear for Reya and small comforts for Lillia's tavern, and confirms the hard limits of his curse: the Hungering Maw can consume only magical items, never ordinary metal, and its demands never stop. He settles on a new goal - to found a guild of his own. On a foray into the forest valley outside Milten, Arwin crosses paths with two traveling adventurers: Rodrick, an easygoing warrior in heavy plate, and Anna, the healer who travels with him. The meeting plants the idea that these two might become part of whatever Arwin builds. The party also hears unsettling rumors of a Unique monster, a great worm, said to roam the valley and stir up the forest's beasts. Lillia, meanwhile, edges toward leaning into a monster theme for her tavern, hiding what she truly is in plain sight, while she and Arwin grow steadily more at ease as neighbors and quiet allies.

Story so far - through chapter 34 (this book)

Arwin's crafting deepens: he forges unique, multi-trait plate armor, advances a tier, and learns that his curse grows harsher over time, demanding ever-stronger magical items to satisfy it. The rumored valley monster proves real - a Forest Worm of journeyman strength that surfaces and turns aggressive. Arwin, Reya, Rodrick, and Anna fight it off together, wounding it badly enough to drive it back underground. The shared danger binds the group. Reya, long unable to gain a class, finally earns one when she stops fighting to kill and starts fighting to control: she becomes a Warden, a unique, unrecognized class built on restraint and willpower. Trusting Rodrick and Anna - who have their own reasons to avoid the Adventurers' Guild - Arwin reveals that he is the reclusive master smith whose work has been circulating, and that his crafting class is something unique. The two agree to join him, and Arwin's guild takes shape as a real, if unofficial, group of four, based around Lillia's tavern and his smithy. The worm's unnatural behavior remains an open worry.

Story so far - through chapter 36 (this book)

As Arwin and Lillia compare what they remember, a darker picture emerges: the entire war between kingdom and horde was staged. Both of them were manipulated champions, each fighting for their own side's survival while unseen handlers kept them alive only as long as they were useful. Neither slaughtered the innocents they were told the other had killed; rogue elements on both sides committed the atrocities, and each champion was shown the other's supposed crimes to feed a hatred that kept the war burning. Crucially, neither Arwin nor Lillia was ever meant to survive the explosion that ended it - they were expendable pieces, discarded once the war had served its purpose. Arwin learns that Lillia's army was run by an organization mirroring his own Adventurers' Guild, and that the guild's leader inspected his armor shortly before the fatal battle. Lillia shares that the same event which reforged Arwin gave her a new class of her own. United by the discovery that they were both betrayed by the powers they served, Lillia fully joins Arwin's guild, and the group's purpose widens from mere survival to uncovering who orchestrated the war, and why.

Story so far - through chapter 46 (this book)

Now a committed team, the guild turns to the journeyman dungeon whose key Reya carries. Their runs test everyone: Arwin forges and repairs gear, Reya develops her Warden powers - gaining Imprison, which weakens the monsters she targets, and an early permanent title that slowly heals her - while Rodrick and Anna grow into their roles. Arwin also learns the nature of Lillia's new class: it strengthens her as paying guests eat and lodge at her tavern, but punishes her when the place sits empty, with penalties that turn lethal if no paying guest stays overnight for too long. The guild's lodging with her holds the danger at bay for now, and pushes her to draw real customers to the neglected street. Meanwhile the Forest Worm threat sharpens: the party comes to believe it is breeding, and that a destructive brood could descend on Milten within a couple of months. Arwin presses to grow stronger before then, banking hard-won achievements toward future gear and skills, and the group commits to going deeper into the dungeon for the materials and power they will need.

Story so far - through chapter 52 (this book)

Arwin's craft reaches a new height when he forges Verdant Blaze, a masterwork hammer that is both a superb tool and a weapon, and earns a permanent title that lets him sense and 'speak' with the magical materials he works. To sell his goods openly without exposing his true identity to the Adventurers' Guild, he adopts a public smith persona: a masked craftsman called Ifrit, complete with a maker's mark. His first market debut as Ifrit is a striking commercial success, drawing crowds and coin. That visibility brings danger. An ambitious, up-and-coming adventuring guild, led by a large, dark-bearded man named Jessen, is hunting for a crafter of its own - and has set its sights on the mysterious smith Ifrit, willing even to pay the Thieves' Guild for his location. Jessen also hints at an unexplained side project that will need materials in a month or two. Unaware how quickly this new threat is closing in, Arwin keeps building his business and his strength, while the guild continues preparing for the looming worm brood.

Story so far - through chapter 58 (this book)

Arwin takes on a young assistant, Zeke - a street teenager and skilled lockpicker, son of a late smith - to help run the growing Ifrit business. He soon learns who is hunting him: the guild pursuing Ifrit is the Iron Hounds, and Tix, a warrior who had earlier bought his work, is one of their members. She tries to recruit Ifrit as the Iron Hounds' exclusive smith so he cannot arm their rivals; when Arwin refuses, she leaves him with a threat. Around the same time Arwin uncovers a harsh truth the Adventurers' Guild hid from him: adventuring guilds routinely war with one another over dungeons and resources, and the notion of guilds existing to protect people is a myth. Pushing deeper into the journeyman dungeon, the party overcomes a bone gargoyle boss that shrugs off ordinary blows but can be broken by magic, aided by Rodrick's empowered strikes; from its chamber they recover a charged bone dagger. Rodrick and Anna learn that Arwin forges unique, wielder-bound weapons of great value, and swear to keep his secret, as the standoff with the Iron Hounds quietly builds toward open conflict.

Story so far - through chapter 62 (this book)

The conflict with the Iron Hounds turns deadly. Their paranoid second-in-command, Erik, orders the reclusive smith and all his stock destroyed without a trace. Unknown to Arwin's party, the Iron Hounds are hiding a far larger secret: under Jessen's direction they secretly control the Forest Worm menacing the valley, part of a scheme still weeks from completion. Arwin, meanwhile, forges a powerful new chestplate and keeps arming his people. Then the Iron Hounds strike: they firebomb Arwin's smithy with unnatural magical fire meant to kill him - but Arwin is away, and young Zeke is working there alone at night. Zeke is killed in the blaze. The loss devastates the guild, and the smithy is left in ashes, closing the chapter on the shock of the boy's death.

Story so far - through chapter 70 (this book)

With Arwin publicly mourned - his official hero's funeral is even called off - he and Lillia turn their grief into a plan: fake his death, arm themselves in secret, and pick off only the Iron Hounds truly responsible for Zeke before the looming worm brood arrives. Trusting her at last, Arwin tells Reya his real history - that he was the Hero of Lian, betrayed by a bomb hidden in his own armor and remade by the mesh with a new class - and she accepts it and joins the effort, keeping it from the others. Working from a makeshift forge in the ruins near his burned smithy, Arwin pours himself into vengeance gear, reforging Zeke's unfinished horned helmet into a fearsome new piece and discovering that the items he makes carry the memories and feelings of everyone who shaped them. He sharpens his equipment-binding skill and prepares to arm Lillia to fight beside him, while Rodrick sets out to locate Tix, the first of the guilty. The guild closes ranks around a careful, deliberate hunt, and Arwin and Lillia grow quietly closer as they ready themselves to strike.

Story so far - through chapter 82 (this book)

With their preparations complete, Arwin and Lillia begin the hunt in earnest, striking down the guilty Iron Hounds one at a time. From Tix, Arwin forces the names of the four members behind the attack before killing her. He then kills Yul, the mage who actually threw the fire that destroyed the smithy, and corners Erik, who gave the order, slaying him with a cursed dagger handed over during a truce so as not to break his own sworn word. Only the guild's leader, Jessen, remains. When Jessen finally appears in person, he proves far stronger than his stated rank, blocking Arwin's hammer with ease. Rather than die fighting a foe he cannot yet beat, Arwin agrees to a mutual truce, 'until we next meet,' leaving in Jessen's hands a dagger that stays secretly bound to his own power. With three of the four avenged, Arwin resolves to keep growing stronger instead of chasing Jessen, keeps the guild in Milten, and begins rebuilding his ruined smithy on its original lot. He and Lillia have grown steadily closer through it all.

Story so far - through chapter 94 (this book)

Settling back into Milten, Arwin admits to himself that he is falling for Lillia, even as he keeps the feeling in check. The guild presses deeper into the dungeon for materials and coin, and when the Thieves' Guild sells Arwin's location to the Iron Hounds and its enforcer Jin ambushes the party, Arwin kills him and two others. Reya grows stronger, advancing a tier and gaining a skill that shatters magic binding herself or her allies. In the dungeon's depths the guild faces its hardest fight yet, against a massive crystalline boss; Rodrick is nearly killed and only Anna's healing saves him, while the party earns hard-won rewards and access to the dungeon's hoard. In the aftermath, the whole guild finally lays its secrets bare. Rodrick admits he is a fallen paladin who lost his holy power; Anna reveals she is simply an ordinary healer, which let her slip away from the Adventurers' Guild unnoticed; and Arwin and Lillia disclose that they were the Hero of Lian and the Demon Queen, both once among the most powerful people alive before the explosion cost them their classes and cast them into Milten. They share their belief that the Adventurers' Guild and the horde's masters keep the war running for their own ends. The group accepts every revelation and swears to guard one another's secrets.

Story so far - through chapter 97 (this book)

In the dungeon's final chambers, the guild uncovers the origin of the magic-absorbing crystals Arwin has been forging into his gear: they are dead fragments of a magical parasite that once transformed an adventurer into the crystalline monster the party just destroyed. Arwin claims the parasite's heart, an item the mesh rates as Epic quality - powerful, but dead and permanently suppressed, a rare crafting material rather than a live threat. A far larger truth follows. The mesh reveals that its true ladder of power runs far higher than anything the war ever showed them: the height Arwin and Lillia once commanded sits well below the real peak. A single unremarkable creature in this remote dungeon could have destroyed their old armies, yet left no legend anywhere - proof that the deception hiding the real scale of power is world-wide, and that whoever staged the war wields strength beyond anything they were allowed to see. As Arwin lifts the parasite's heart and notes how its hunger mirrors his own, the mesh answers with a formal Challenge: his class's hunger is greater than his body can bear, and unless he learns to control it, it will consume and kill him. Shaken, not even understanding what a Challenge is, Arwin is left with an existential threat growing inside him. The book closes there - the guild united and their true selves known to one another, three of Zeke's four killers avenged with Jessen deferred under an uneasy truce, and Arwin holding a powerful new material and a warning that his own class may destroy him.

How does it end? (ending)

Book 1 ends inside a remote dungeon outside Milten, just after Arwin's guild defeats its boss. The five members - Arwin, Lillia, Reya, Rodrick, and Anna - have finally shared their true identities and stand united and sworn to secrecy. Arwin remains publicly dead, still a low-tier crafter rebuilding from nothing, but now carries a dead, Epic-quality crafting material and the knowledge that the world's real hierarchy of power runs far above anything he and Lillia were ever shown, even at the height of their old strength. He and Lillia are quietly in love, though neither has spoken it. The revenge arc is all but closed: three of the four Iron Hounds who killed Zeke are dead, and only their leader Jessen survives, far stronger than he pretends, held off by a fragile truce - with a dagger still secretly bound to Arwin left in his hands. Several threads carry into the next book: the mesh's new Challenge, which warns that Arwin's class-hunger will kill him unless he masters it; the still-unexplained forces that staged the war and hid the true scale of power; the Forest Worm near Milten, which the reader knows is secretly controlled by the Iron Hounds though the guild does not; the smithy, cleared and awaiting rebuilding; and Rodrick's still-undisclosed deeper past, his former order and why he fell. Arwin resolves to grow quietly stronger and investigate rather than confront his enemies head-on.
