Rogue Protocol characters

By Martha Wells

Every entry below is hidden until you open it, and each names the chapter the character first appears in.

Murderbot (Protagonist)

Also known as SecUnit

Appears from the start

Traveling under a fabricated identity, the SecUnit is on its way to Milu, an abandoned terraforming facility, to find proof that the company GrayCris was running an illegal alien remnant salvage operation there. The evidence is for Dr. Mensah, who is fighting GrayCris in arbitration and who does not know the SecUnit is doing this. It is unowned, unsupervised, and increasingly aware that it cares what happens to people it has no contract with, which it regards as a fault.

Miki (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 2

A small bot belonging to the leader of a corporate assessment team, built for general assistance and treated by its humans as a friend and a companion rather than as equipment. It has no governor module, has never been deliberately lied to, and trusts everyone it meets, which the SecUnit finds naive, useful and hard to look at.

Don Abene (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 2

The leader of the corporate assessment team sent to inspect the abandoned terraforming facility on behalf of a prospective buyer. Senior, capable and used to being listened to, she is genuinely attached to Miki and treats the bot as a member of the group, which shapes how the whole team behaves.

Wilken

First appears in chapter 3

One of two augmented human security operatives hired to protect the assessment team, equipped for combat and impatient with anyone else's opinion about the team's safety. The SecUnit has met this pair before, working for a different employer on a mining installation, and knows what they are willing to do for money.

Gerth

First appears in chapter 3

The second of the two augmented security operatives hired for the expedition, and Wilken's long-standing partner. The SecUnit has encountered this one before as well, on the same job.
