Weakened and held underground by the Apparat's cult of the faithful, Alina escapes with her friends and sets out to finish the war against the Darkling. They rescue Prince Nikolai, whom the Darkling's shadow magic has turned into a half-monstrous creature, and Mal tracks the third and last amplifier, the firebird. The terrible truth emerges from Morozova's history: the third amplifier is Mal himself, the last descendant of the ancient maker of the amplifiers, and to claim its power Alina would have to kill him. In the final confrontation the Darkling is destroyed. Alina drives a blade into Mal to take the power, but instead of concentrating in her, the sacrifice shatters the amplifiers and scatters their strength to the Grisha around her, and Mal is brought back to life. Alina loses her own summoning power entirely and becomes an ordinary woman, and the Shadow Fold is unmade at last. Nikolai is restored and becomes king, rebuilding Ravka and its Grisha, while Alina and Mal, both believed dead, quietly return to the orphanage where they grew up to live out simple lives together.

Previously, in the Shadow and Bone trilogy: Alina Starkov, an overlooked orphan and army mapmaker, discovered she was the Sun Summoner, the Grisha destined to destroy the Shadow Fold, a band of deadly darkness dividing Ravka. She was taken by the Darkling, the ageless leader of the Grisha, who had secretly created the Fold and meant to use her light as a weapon of conquest. Alina fled with her friend Mal and claimed a first amplifier from Morozova's stag, escaping the Darkling's attempt to enslave her power. But he survived, gained an army of shadow monsters, and hunted her again. The privateer captain Sturmhond, revealed to be Prince Nikolai Lantsov, helped her win a second amplifier from a great sea creature and brought her back to Ravka, where she became the reluctant leader of the Second Army and a saint to the people. The Darkling then stormed the capital and took it: Nikolai vanished, gravely attacked by the shadow creatures, and Alina, her power faltering, was driven underground by a cult of the faithful. The war now turns on finding a third and final amplifier, the firebird, that might let Alina destroy both the Fold and the Darkling.

Alina begins the book weakened and effectively imprisoned beneath the earth, kept as a living saint by the Apparat and his cult of devoted pilgrims, her power diminished and her freedom gone. Cut off from open war and chafing under the priest's control, she and the loyal companions who remain, including Mal and a handful of Grisha, work to break free and rejoin the fight against the Darkling, who now holds the capital and commands his shadow soldiers. Their immediate goals are to escape the underground stronghold, recover their scattered allies, and take up the search for the third amplifier, the firebird, which offers the last real hope of matching the Darkling's power. Reclaiming her own agency after the disaster at the capital is Alina's first battle, before she can turn to the larger one.

Alina escapes the Apparat's underground stronghold, reunites her scattered allies, and rescues Nikolai, whom the Darkling's shadow magic has transformed into a winged, half-feral creature. Mal, the great tracker, hunts the third amplifier, the firebird, but Morozova's buried history reveals the real secret: the third amplifier is Mal, the last living descendant of the ancient Grisha who forged the amplifiers, and its power can only pass to Alina through his death. In the final battle the Darkling is brought down and killed, and Alina burns his body. She then kills Mal to claim the amplifier, but the sacrifice does not work as expected: instead of flooding into her, the power shatters the amplifiers and disperses across the Grisha near her, and Mal's life is restored. Alina survives but loses her summoning power completely, becoming an ordinary person, otkazat'sya, at last. The Shadow Fold is destroyed. Nikolai, freed from his monstrous state, takes the throne of Ravka and, with surviving Grisha like Zoya, Genya, David, Tolya, and Tamar, begins to rebuild the shattered country and its Second Army. Alina and Mal, both believed to have died in the final battle so that the legend of the Sun Saint can rest, return unknown to the orphanage at Keramzin where they were raised, to live quietly and freely together.
