Running Blind

By Lee Child

The fourth entry in the series finds Jack Reacher stopping a protection racket at a New York restaurant before being detained by the FBI, who reveal that two former Army servicewomen he once helped through sexual-harassment investigations have been murdered by the same method, with a third killing later confirmed. Cleared as a suspect once surveillance places him elsewhere, Reacher is pressured into helping the investigation: agents imply they will expose his girlfriend Jodie Garber to the men behind the earlier protection racket unless he cooperates as a military liaison. Reluctant but determined to protect Jodie, Reacher travels to Quantico with FBI profiler Julia Lamarr, piecing together a killing pattern that leaves victims submerged in Army camouflage paint with no clear cause of death, while searching for a suspect whose access and methods suggest military investigative knowledge.
