Rupert of Hentzau

By Anthony Hope

Three years have passed in Ruritania. Queen Flavia's royal marriage set the whole country celebrating, but the king is a sick, suspicious man, jealous of the Englishman Rudolf Rassendyll, and the queen's only consolation is a few words sent to Rassendyll in secret once a year, with a few words back. Worn down at last, she writes him a real letter of farewell and gives it to her loyal friend Fritz von Tarlenheim, who narrates this sequel, to carry to a meeting at Wintenberg. Rupert of Hentzau, the charming and unscrupulous young noble now living in exile, has been watching for exactly this kind of chance: a letter that could ruin the queen if it ever reached her husband. Anthony Hope's sequel to The Prisoner of Zenda brings Rassendyll back into the affairs of the kingdom.
