She works long hours as a waitress, rents a remote and sparsely furnished cottage, and saves every small amount she can, while remaining wary of attention. Her nearest neighbor, Jo, is friendly and persistent enough to draw her into conversation. At the town's general store Katie meets its owner, Alex Wheatley, a widower raising his son Josh and daughter Kristen. Alex's background in military police makes him observant, but he does not press Katie when he notices her guarded behavior. Kristen takes to her quickly, and Katie begins returning to the store. These tentative relationships offer her the possibility of belonging, though ordinary kindness still feels dangerous to someone accustomed to planning for escape.

Alex gives Katie a bicycle that will make her journey between the cottage and restaurant easier. She initially reads the gift as an obligation and reacts defensively, but accepts after understanding that he expects nothing in return. Time with Alex, Josh, and Kristen gradually softens her isolation, while Jo encourages her to acknowledge her interest in him. The narrative also reveals the danger behind Katie's caution. Her real name is Erin Tierney, and her husband Kevin is a Boston police detective. At home he subjected her to escalating control and violence, then treated his own suspicions as proof of disobedience. Erin secretly accumulated the means to flee and adopted a new identity. Kevin is now using his professional access to search for her, presenting himself as the wronged husband rather than the source of the threat.

Katie becomes increasingly involved with the Wheatleys. She enjoys the children's trust and sees that Alex remains devoted to the memory of his late wife Carly without being closed to a new relationship. Alex and Katie's attraction develops into love, but his trained eye notices signs that she has altered her appearance and is hiding from someone. Katie and Alex settle into a closer relationship, sharing family outings and speaking more openly about both Carly and Kevin. A frightening incident involving the children reinforces their reliance on one another and Katie's attachment to Josh and Kristen. The sense of safety is temporary. Kevin exploits police information and follows the trail Erin worked hard to conceal, eventually identifying Katie's new life in Southport. His thoughts become more disordered as alcohol, jealousy, and a conviction of ownership feed one another. He travels south with his weapon. Katie knows that disclosure has made Alex an ally, but neither of them knows how near Kevin is or how readily he will endanger the children to regain control.

Kevin reaches Southport and watches Katie with Alex and the children, interpreting their happiness as betrayal. Armed and intoxicated, he moves against the family and starts a fire that engulfs the Wheatley store and living quarters. Katie and Alex focus on getting Josh and Kristen out of the burning structure. Katie then draws Kevin away from the children, knowing that she is the object of his pursuit. The confrontation becomes a direct struggle for survival. Kevin's police authority no longer shields him, and the private violence Katie once had to endure without witnesses is exposed as he attacks her amid the destruction he has caused.

Katie resists Kevin during the final attack, and he is killed in the violent confrontation. Alex, Katie, Josh, and Kristen survive the fire, although the store and home are devastated. The end of Kevin's pursuit gives Katie the freedom to choose her life rather than merely hide. Alex later gives her a letter Carly wrote before dying, addressed to the woman he might one day love. Carly asks that woman to care for Alex and the children and to keep her memory present rather than replace it. With the letter is a photograph. Katie recognizes Carly as Jo, the neighbor who befriended her, listened to her fears, and guided her toward Alex, although Alex and the children never encountered Jo. Katie realizes that those conversations were a final act of Carly's care. Receiving her blessing, Katie commits herself to Alex and the children and accepts Southport as home.

Kevin tracks Katie to Southport and arrives intoxicated and armed while Alex and his children are with her. He sets the Wheatley store and home ablaze, forcing Katie and the children to escape the fire, and pursues Katie when she draws him away from them. During the violent confrontation, Kevin is killed. Alex, Katie, Josh, and Kristen survive, though their home and business are badly damaged. Afterward Alex gives Katie a letter that his late wife Carly wrote before her death for the woman he might someday love. The letter thanks that future partner for caring for Alex and the children and asks her to help keep Carly's place in their lives. A photograph with the letter shows Katie that Carly was Jo, the neighbor who befriended and advised her, even though no one else had ever met Jo. Katie understands that her friend was Carly's spirit guiding her toward the family. Free from Kevin, she chooses a future with Alex and his children.
