In short (whole book)
A device in a cranberry bog poisons Val's hand and adds a Fae beacon to Chopper, drawing magical attackers and exposing a plot against her. With Zav, Sindari, Amber, Nin, and her household helping, Val searches for a route to the Fae realm while an elven assassin closes in under contract from a rival Silverclaw dragon. Val, Amber, and Nin escape into the Fae realm, where its queen removes the beacon and heals Val but requires her to face the assassin. Val wins the arena duel, Zav defeats the dragon who commissioned the killing, and the contract is canceled. Zav proposes and Val accepts. The immediate threat ends, but Val's father's magical illness remains unsolved, Chopper's ancient dwarven powers point toward Mount Krennel, and Val takes a new case involving a thief whose portal device appears connected to the dwarven homeworld.
Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)
Previously: Val Thorvald is a half-elven investigator who handles magical threats while sharing a home and business with an unusual group of allies. She wields the enchanted dwarven sword Chopper and can summon Sindari, a telepathic magical tiger. Her relationship with her teenage daughter, Amber, remains difficult, while her former husband, Thad, has begun dating Val's friend Nin. Dimitri and Zoltan are part of Val's household and help operate the Sable Dragon, and Val's younger elf half-sister studies magic and engineering. Willard directs Val's official assignments. Zav, a dragon lord and son of a queen, regards Val as his mate under dragon custom, though their understanding of the relationship does not fully match human expectations. Val also has ties to an elven father and a human mother across different worlds and communities. Unresolved dangers from earlier adventures include anti-dragon rebels, a leak connected to the elven court, and an escaped scientist.
Story so far - through chapter 9 (this book)
So far: Val investigates a strange device in a cranberry bog where animals have been dying. When she breaks the object with Chopper, her hand is cut and refuses to heal normally, while the sword begins radiating a powerful magical signal. Creatures repeatedly come for it, and a fire-made attack badly injures Val at her home. Zav determines that Fae magic has become intertwined with Chopper's older dwarven enchantments, making simple removal too dangerous. Val's half-sister identifies the effect as deliberate imbuing magic and suspects that the device was meant to draw Val into striking it. Dr. Walker confirms that Val's lingering wound is magically poisoned. Willard begins investigating routes to the Fae realm, while Val's allies seek someone capable of separating the enchantments. The threat has spread beyond Earth, and Val suspects a hidden mage is watching her. At the end of chapter 9, Zav detects a separate elven magical trace near the house, confirming that an unidentified elf has recently been there.
Story so far - through chapter 11 (this book)
Through chapter 11: The new elven trace turns the vague sense of surveillance into evidence of an unidentified visitor. As the Sable Dragon's owners discuss staffing and ways to give Dimitri more time for enchanting, Nin offers to ask her well-traveled grandfather about obtaining a key to the Fae realm. Zav then finds a wooden token marked with a leaf and dagger outside Val's property, strengthening the possibility that the watcher intends a threat. Willard provides another approach: a magical toadstool that can call a Fae when a virgin activates it near a fairy ring. Val now has a possible way to reach the Fae realm, but using it may require involving Amber in a dangerous encounter. The poison in Val's hand, the sword's beacon, and the identity of the person behind the trap remain unresolved.
How does it end? (ending)
In the Fae realm, the Fae queen acknowledges lending the marking device to the elven assassin. In exchange for sweets, she removes the added magic from Chopper without damaging its older enchantments and returns the sword. Before the required arena duel, she heals Val's hand at the assassin's request for a fair fight. Val then defeats him with help from Chopper's newly evident combat guidance and her strengthened root magic. Zav arrives after defeating the rival Silverclaw dragon who ordered Val's death. The employer is sent to the Dragon Justice Court, and the assassin accepts payment to cancel the contract and promises not to threaten Val again. Zav proposes, and Val accepts. Back on Earth, the Sable Dragon prospers through magical security products, and Val resumes magical training while wedding plans take shape. Val's father remains afflicted by an unidentified source of ancient dragon magic. Chopper's dwarven origins, a possible connection to Mount Krennel, and Willard's new case involving a portal-using artifact thief lead toward the dwarven homeworld.
