In short (whole book)

Days before Val and Zav's wedding, a grenade damages the Coffee Dragon and a young troll named Reb disappears. Val traces stolen weapons and Reb to hostile trolls who regard her business as a threat, while intensive lessons expand her command of Storm and may explain her worsening exhaustion. Reb is rescued, but the surviving shaman faction attacks the ceremony at the goblin sanctuary. Val's allies, magical-community guests, and the dragons defeat them, and Zav kills the last shaman before his suicide blast can reach the guests. Val and Zav marry after the battle, while dragon peace talks begin without producing a confirmed treaty. The renovated Coffee Dragon reopens, Reb starts training with Val and Amber, and Willard sends Val toward her next unpaid assignment at an Olympic Peninsula lavender farm.

Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)

Previously: Val Thorvald, a half-elven investigator, built a life among Seattle's magical community while helping run the Coffee Dragon. She became engaged to the dragon Zavryd and carries Storm, an ancient dwarven sword that she holds only under conditional permission and must eventually return to the dwarven people. Her allies include the magical tiger Sindari, Colonel Willard, enchanter Dimitri, vampire alchemist Zoltan, weapons maker Nin, and her daughter Amber. Val has also met her elven father, the king, and other relatives from his world. Her relationship with that side of her family remains relatively new, while her long absence from Amber's life still makes their bond sensitive. Her coming marriage to Zav will bring together human, elven, goblin, and dragon guests, including Zav's formidable mother. The event therefore carries family and political significance beyond the couple themselves, even before the practical demands of hosting so many different kinds of guests.

Story so far - through chapter 8 (this book)

So far: Val and Zav's riverside wedding site floods less than a week before the ceremony, and the deposit is lost after Zav eats a cow belonging to the venue. Goblins offer their hidden sanctuary as a replacement. At the same time, an explosion tears apart the Coffee Dragon and injures several patrons. A fragment resembles magical grenade shrapnel, but the attacker remains unknown. Val's elven father arrives with armed relatives, creating tension with Zoltan and crowding Val's home. Zav also brings a dwarven master smith to teach Val how to use Storm. Through exhausting nighttime sessions, Val learns to create a durable barrier and use commands for speed, force, and guided defense. Her increased need for an inhaler concerns her, and a previously defeated elven assassin is seen watching the house, making him a possible but unproven suspect in the bombing.

Story so far - through chapter 15 (this book)

Val's investigation broadens after Inga reports that her foster son Reb has vanished. Nin identifies the bomb fragment as part of one of her own grenades and discovers that fifteen weapons were stolen from her truck. Sindari finds a faint troll trail, and Willard points Val toward an underground troll bar. Val enters with Sindari and her elven half-sister, whose magic detects the stolen grenades and finds Reb imprisoned in the kitchen. The rescue attempt turns into a fight against armed trolls and a shaman. The attackers remove Reb through another tunnel, leaving behind his toy, food-truck evidence, and a wedding invitation with the date and old venue marked. Val now believes the stolen grenades may be intended for the ceremony, and Reb remains captive.

Story so far - through chapter 23 (this book)

The elves release Liam after learning that they mistook his intimate encounter with Val's mother for violence. Val's mother then meets the elven king for the first time in decades. The troll threat escalates near Willard's apartment when a shaman arrives carrying the dwarven mentor's monster-summoning box. Val, Sindari, Willard, and Walker defeat the creatures he releases and capture him. Walker reveals a powerful animal battle form during the fight. The prisoner claims that Val and her allies endanger trolls, escapes restraint, and takes Willard hostage. Walker saves her, killing the shaman, and Willard responds to him with an unmistakable sign of affection. The group recovers the box but still has no location for Reb or the remaining explosives. Val and Zav begin searching for the missing mentor while Walker follows Reb's scent.

Story so far - through chapter 26 (this book)

Val and her companions find the dwarven mentor alive but wounded and infected with troll rot after an ambush. Zoltan develops a treatment, and the recovering dwarf offers to teach Dimitri how to work with a dwarven anvil. Walker locates Reb beneath the monorail. The boy flees onto a moving train, but Val and Sindari prevent him from falling and bring him home safely. Reb admits that he stole a grenade from Val's bag to frighten bullies. Adult trolls then compelled him to serve them, and workers connected to the troll bar bombed the Coffee Dragon under the influence of two shaman brothers. His account places the hostile group in old tunnels beneath Seattle and confirms that its campaign is directed at Val and Dimitri. Reb is safe again, but the group still possesses explosives and remains a threat to the imminent wedding.

Story so far - through chapter 32 (this book)

The elven assassin approaches Val only to request help acquiring sweets for the Fae Queen, removing him as an immediate threat. Zav's mother arrives and accepts Val as a suitable fighting partner for her son, though she objects to their Earth home. She also brings the prospect of peace talks with a rival dragon-clan patriarch. Dimitri and the dwarven mentor build a portable device intended to suppress magic. Their tunnel search finds that the trolls have left, but a magical message promises revenge before the next full moon. The dwarf suggests that Storm may be draining Val and teaches her a restorative meditation command, which gives her relief before the wedding. At the goblin sanctuary, Val's elven father approves the marriage and agrees to conduct an elven rite. The rival patriarch arrives for talks and openly dislikes Val. As the assembled families and magical community prepare for the ceremony, Walker detects hostile trolls and the first grenades strike the sanctuary.

Story so far - through chapter 36 (this book)

Val shoots incoming grenades from the air and moves guests to cover while her allies engage the attackers. Dimitri's repaired deamplifier neutralizes hostile magic, and Storm responds to Val's intent with a new fireball ability, though every major use worsens her breathing and fatigue. Friendly trolls, goblins, ogres, orcs, and dragons join the defense. When the last shaman attempts a suicide blast, Zav kills him and magic contains the explosion. The surviving attackers flee, and the dragon queen and rival patriarch pursue them together. With the guests alive, the ceremony proceeds. Val and Zav marry in human, goblin, and elven rites, and the queen personally welcomes Val as Zav's mate. The two dragon leaders continue promising treaty discussions, but no agreement is final. Later, the expanded Coffee Dragon celebrates its reopening. Reb begins sword training with Val and Amber, Nin closes most of her weapons business, and Zoltan turns wedding footage into a large online following for the shop. Val and Zav plan their honeymoon, while Willard calls in one of three jobs Val owes her: investigating trouble at an Olympic Peninsula lavender farm. A closing story returns to the preceding Christmas Eve, when Zav brings Amber home from Whistler so she can join Val's unexpectedly crowded household celebration.

How does it end? (ending)

The grenade-armed trolls attack the goblin sanctuary immediately before the ceremony. Val, Sindari, Willard, Walker, Dimitri, the dwarven mentor, friendly magical guests, and the dragons defend the site. Dimitri's repaired deamplifier weakens troll magic, and Zav kills the final shaman before his suicide attack can harm the gathering. The survivors flee, and no wedding guests are reported killed. Val and Zav then marry in human, goblin, and elven rites. The dragon queen accepts Val as her son's mate and continues productive talks with the rival-clan patriarch, though no peace treaty is confirmed. In the epilogue, the expanded Coffee Dragon reopens. Reb is safe with Inga and begins sword practice with Val and Amber. Nin leaves the magical-weapons trade except for making Val's ammunition, Dimitri continues developing as an enchanter, and Willard and Walker are together. Val and Zav plan a honeymoon, while Val still owes Willard three jobs. Trouble at a lavender farm on the Olympic Peninsula becomes the next assignment. The book closes by returning to the previous Christmas Eve, when Zav brings Amber back from Whistler to join Val's crowded household celebration.
