A draconic bull who carries John and Ellie across immense distances in the void. He fights void creatures with his horns and serves as both transport and physical protection for his companions.
John (Protagonist)
Also known as Eternal Flame
Appears from the start
A farmer and the focal bearer of the Eternal Flame, traveling through the void with his wife and their draconic bull. His human appearance contains a perpetually renewing body of pure fire, and he carries their preserved world while seeking a stable source of mana on which to anchor it.
Issa (Supporting)

A priestess connected to the local shrine system. She arrives with soldiers and an armored winged guardian to investigate the strange blue flame that has replaced the town shrine's former symbol and begun healing selected worshippers.

An armored winged warrior who accompanies Issa and a troop of soldiers while they investigate the blue flame above the damaged town shrine.
Rama (Supporting)

A winged warrior serving as a Heavenly Guardian beside Issa. Her instincts identify the town's blue flame as powerful enough to destroy her, although she does not yet know that John controls it. She also tells the travelers about the approaching local festival.

The distant head of the region's religion, based in the Valley of Paradise. She empowered winged guardians to defend settlements against desperate beasts, and travelers can seek an audience by completing a temple pilgrimage.

The grandson of an elderly convert in the desert town. John entrusts him with an Eternal Flame guidebook, an enchanted quill, and a lasting ink supply, then grants him the literacy needed to read and copy the teachings.
Wealthy young woman (Minor)

A wealthy young traveler accompanied by a servant and guards during the Festival of Drifting Stars. Ellie's divination places her in mortal danger within four days if events do not change, so John and Ellie decide to watch over her.
Orly (Minor)
First appears in chapter 9
A high-status young traveler whom John and Ellie met during the Festival of Drifting Stars. She moves with servants and guards, while Ellie's divination warns that she is close to a terrible death. A large bandit force soon attacks the inn where she is staying.
Sigvald (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 10
Ellie's lightning-bird familiar, revealed during the defense of Orly's town. Sigvald can assume a giant avian form and joins Ferdie and the others in combat, striking down the leader of the mounted bandits attacking the settlement.
Warrior guide (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 11
A third-tier fighter who leads the expedition toward a rumored mage tower in the central desert. He recognizes John and Ellie as Grandmasters and accepts their protection while guiding the party along the mapped route.
Elven archers (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 12
Two elven archers traveling with the warrior guide on the expedition toward the rumored desert mage tower. They recognize John and Ellie as Grandmasters and defer to them when danger threatens the party.
Dust-storm spirit (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 13
A sentient tier-five storm spirit formed from the desert world’s desire for vengeance. It warns that something in the central mountains is stealing the world’s mana, recognizes Ellie’s unusual nature, and forms a familiar contract with her.
Dusty (Supporting)

The name Ellie gives her new familiar after contracting the tier-five storm spirit. Dusty combines wind and earth aspects, giving Ellie authority over weaker spirits that share those aspects.
Coral Tower spirit (Supporting)

The water-aligned guardian of a buried, sea-themed mage tower that has lacked a master for centuries. It identifies a world wound in the shrouded mountains as the drain on its ley line, opens the tower to John, and hopes the world and its lost sea can be restored.
Rabia (Supporting)

The Shadow Tower spirit responsible for managing the preserved valley while John and Ellie travel. She has resolved immediate food and housing pressures and is accommodating the displaced population while John searches for a permanent anchor.
Holy Celestial (Supporting)

The long-lived ruler of the Valley of Paradise, a world shard embedded in a dying host world. She gathers faith through distant shrines to maintain the boundary between the two worlds and grants John and Ellie access to her research and the failing mana-drain enchantment.
Katrine (Supporting)

A returning ally and close-combat fighter with mechanical limbs. She visits John after returning from the preserved valley alongside her partner, the Tower engineer, and reconnects with Candle Scholar Tower as John resumes the search for a safe anchor.
Tower engineer (Supporting)

An artifact specialist, Katrine’s partner, and a returning member of John’s circle. He uses portable dimensional-gate technology and rejoins Candle Scholar Tower after working in the preserved valley, bringing practical engineering expertise to the group’s research.
Frederick (Supporting)

A Sixth Order mage who oversees part of Candle Scholar Tower's farmland. Practical and committed to agriculture, he favors ordinary labor when magic is unnecessary and explains the Tower's crop rotation, livestock, processing, and field-control systems to John.
Janus Gustav (Antagonist)
First appears in chapter 37
A body-focused Supreme warrior of the Gustav family who previously participated in an attack on John and Ellie. John enters the Gustav shard world to confront him as a public demonstration that Candle Scholar Tower can defend itself against the mage families.
Captain Worrell (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 41
An airship captain hired to carry John's expedition into the Void Labyrinth. His vessel has a micro-gate for rapid dimensional travel, and he accepts the dangerous commission before realizing that John intends to leave ordinary worlds and cross the void directly.
Ben (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 45
A returning member of John and Ellie's valley household who has survived the community's unseen reduction and transport inside the stabilized orb. He reunites with John after the valley becomes part of a much larger world and listens as the journey is explained.
Armored champion (Antagonist)
First appears in chapter 46
An armed visitor who arrives at Candle Scholar Tower with three armored women, two bearing bannered spears and one carrying a ceremonial horn. Claiming divine selection, the champion demands to find the dragon slayer and presents an immediate hostile challenge.
