Previously: Stephanie Plum has become a working Trenton apprehension agent with Lula as her regular partner and Ranger as her mentor and operational backup. Her last case required her to investigate Ranger when he was accused of murdering Homer Ramos; she proved that the death arose from conflict inside the Ramos family's illegal weapons business and cleared Ranger. Danger to Stephanie's home pushed her into Joe Morelli's house, making their relationship increasingly domestic. Ranger nevertheless remained a romantic alternative and left Stephanie conscious of a personal debt between them. She begins this book closer to Morelli but without having eliminated Ranger from her emotional life.

Stephanie and her allies locate the missing men and end the immediate threat to them. The bond case closes with DeChooch alive to answer for skipping court and for the violence surrounding the package. At home, Valerie and her daughters remain with the Plum family after Valerie's marriage collapses. Stephanie's own proposed marriage does not survive the case: she recognizes that family momentum and Morelli's certainty cannot substitute for her consent to that future. She abandons the wedding and goes to Ranger, ending the book at his door with Morelli no longer her chosen fiancé and the attraction to Ranger brought to the surface but not yet resolved into a relationship.
