Alina Starkov, an unremarkable orphan and army mapmaker, discovers she is the Sun Summoner, a Grisha able to conjure light and, in legend, the only one who can destroy the Shadow Fold that divides her country of Ravka. When her power erupts to save her lifelong friend Mal during a Fold crossing, she is taken by the Darkling, leader of the Grisha, to the Little Palace to be trained. There she is dazzled by power, status, and the Darkling's attention, while an old teacher named Baghra pushes her to master her gift. Baghra finally reveals the truth: the Darkling created the Shadow Fold long ago and means to use Alina's light not to heal Ravka but to turn the Fold into a weapon of conquest. Alina flees, and the Darkling hunts a legendary stag whose antlers can be forged into an amplifier to bind and control her. Mal tracks the stag; when the Darkling catches them and forces the amplifier onto Alina, he takes her onto the Fold and kills to demonstrate his control. But the bond runs both ways, and Alina seizes command of her own power, unleashing light and escaping with Mal across the Fold to flee Ravka, with the Darkling left behind but not destroyed.

Alina Starkov is a slight, overlooked orphan serving as a mapmaker in Ravka's First Army, a country split in two by the Shadow Fold, a band of unnatural darkness full of winged monsters. Her one anchor is Mal, the friend she grew up with, now a celebrated tracker. When their regiment is ordered to cross the Fold, their skiff is attacked and Mal is about to be killed. In her terror Alina unleashes a blaze of light she never knew she had, driving off the creatures. The Grisha, Ravka's magic-wielders, recognize what this means: she is the Sun Summoner of legend, the one who might destroy the Fold. She is pulled away from Mal and the ordinary army and delivered to the Darkling, the ageless and powerful leader of the Grisha, who declares that she is the key to saving their nation and takes her under his command.

Alina is brought to the Little Palace, the glittering home of the Grisha elite, and thrust into a world of luxury, rivalry, and sorcery she barely understands. She befriends the kind Tailor Genya and clashes with the proud Squaller Zoya, while struggling to summon her light at will. The Darkling lavishes attention on her and speaks of the future they could build together, and Alina, long invisible, is flattered and drawn in. She is set to train under Baghra, a severe old woman whose brutal lessons finally teach her to reach her power on her own. Cut off from Mal and unsure whom to trust, Alina begins to sense that the dazzling court hides dangerous currents, and that her new life is not the rescue it first appeared to be.

Baghra reveals the truth that shatters Alina's new world: the Darkling is far older than he seems and created the Shadow Fold himself with forbidden magic, and he means to use Alina's light to turn the Fold into a weapon of conquest rather than destroy it. Warned that she is to be enslaved to his will, Alina flees the Little Palace alone into the winter, hunted. The key to his plan is a legendary creature, Morozova's stag, whose antlers can be forged into an amplifier that would vastly increase Alina's power and let the Darkling command it. As Alina runs for her life and the Darkling's forces close in, the search for the stag becomes the race that will decide whether she can escape his control or be bound to it.

Reunited with Mal, who tracks Morozova's stag, Alina finds the creature but hesitates to kill it. The Darkling seizes them both, slays the stag himself, and fastens its antler collar around Alina's neck, binding her power to his will. He takes her onto the Shadow Fold and, to demonstrate his mastery, uses her light to kill, revealing the full horror of his plan to weaponize the darkness. Alina realizes that the connection the amplifier forges runs in both directions, and she wrests control back from him, unleashing blinding light and breaking his hold. She and Mal, wounded, escape across the Fold and flee Ravka by sea. The Darkling is not seen to die, and the truth of his ambition, and of what he created, is now exposed. Alina leaves as a fugitive, carrying the stag's amplifier and the burden of a power the whole country will want to claim.

Mal, the finest tracker in the army, finds the stag. When Alina hesitates to kill it, the Darkling seizes them both, slays the stag, and fastens its antler collar around Alina's neck, binding her power to his will. He forces her onto the Shadow Fold and, to prove his mastery, uses her light to kill. Alina realizes the connection the amplifier forges links them in both directions, and she wrests control back, flooding the Fold with blinding light and breaking his hold.
