Shadow of a Dark Queen recap

In short (whole book)

Erik von Darkmoor, a baron's unacknowledged son apprenticed to a blacksmith, kills his abusive half-brother while defending Rosalyn and flees Ravensburg with his friend Rupert Avery. Captured in Krondor and condemned, Erik and Roo are secretly spared and recruited by Calis into a company trained for a near-suicidal reconnaissance mission. Under Robert de Loungville's brutal instruction, the prisoners become soldiers and sail to Novindus. There they cross a continent being consumed by the Emerald Queen's armies, discovering a disciplined host that includes displaced humans, Pantathian serpent priests, Saaur warriors, and summoned demons. Calis is revealed as the son of the elven queen Aglaranna and Tomas, carrying human, elven, and Valheru inheritances. The company infiltrates enemy territory, suffers heavy losses, and escapes with proof that the conquest of Novindus is only preparation for an invasion of the Kingdom. Erik and Roo return home alive, their old lives gone and a much larger war approaching.

Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)

Previously, in the Riftwar Saga: a magical rift brought the Tsurani of Kelewan into a nine-year war with the Kingdom of the Isles. Pug, once an orphan at Crydee, was enslaved on Kelewan, trained as one of its Great Ones, and returned as a magician able to act across worlds. His boyhood friend Tomas inherited the armour and memories of the Valheru Ashen-Shugar, then learned to balance that ancient power with his human self. Tomas rules Elvandar beside Queen Aglaranna; their son Calis was the first known child of a human father and an elven mother. At Sethanon, Pug and Tomas prevented the Valheru from returning through the Lifestone, an artefact still guarded beneath the city. Decades have passed. Pug and Tomas have become elder guardians rather than young adventurers, while the Kingdom has known enough peace for the war and its hidden causes to pass into history for most people.

Story so far - through chapter 4 (this book)

In Ravensburg, Erik is a blacksmith's apprentice and the unacknowledged son of Baron von Darkmoor. His legitimate half-brother Stefan uses the family's authority to torment him and to threaten Rosalyn, the young woman Erik loves. A confrontation turns fatal when Erik intervenes and Stefan is killed. Erik's friend Roo chooses flight with him over safety at home. The two leave the town as wanted men, helped on the road by Nakor, an eccentric Isalani traveller whose impossible tricks sit oddly beside his claim that there is no such thing as magic. Their escape ends when the Kingdom's agents catch them and take them toward Krondor to face judgment.

Story so far - through chapter 8 (this book)

Erik and Roo are tried for Stefan's death and condemned. The execution is a deception: royal agents remove them from ordinary justice and offer a stark choice between death and service on a secret mission. They join other condemned men under Calis and his sergeant, Robert de Loungville. The recruits are not pardoned or trusted. They are isolated, stripped of their former identities, and told only that survival depends on becoming a disciplined company. Erik's physical strength and practical sense begin to distinguish him, while Roo looks for the rules and opportunities hidden inside their new situation.

Story so far - through chapter 12 (this book)

De Loungville's training breaks the prisoners down through forced marches, weapons drill, hunger, and carefully engineered confusion. Some fail; the survivors learn to move and think as soldiers. Erik proves especially capable with horses, field repairs, and command under pressure. Roo lacks Erik's strength but compensates with nerve and observation. Once the recruits are ready, Calis takes them to sea with veterans including Luis de Savona and the monk Sho Pi. During the passage, the company finally learns more about its commander: Calis is the son of Tomas and the elven queen Aglaranna, and his unusual nature joins human and elven blood with the Valheru legacy carried by his father. Their destination is Novindus, where earlier agents have vanished while investigating a rapidly expanding war.

Story so far - through chapter 16 (this book)

In Novindus, Calis's company travels through lands destabilised by conquest and mass flight. Towns and villages have been emptied, destroyed, or absorbed into the advance of a ruler called the Emerald Queen. The soldiers pose as mercenaries and refugees while searching for intelligence and surviving a journey in which every local allegiance is uncertain. They find that the enemy is gathering many peoples rather than merely annexing territory. The name of the Emerald Queen carries religious as well as political force, and Pantathian serpent priests appear close to the centre of her cause, but the woman behind the title remains remote and poorly understood.

Story so far - through chapter 20 (this book)

The expedition penetrates farther into conquered territory and confirms that the enemy's scale exceeds the Kingdom's fears. The host includes the Saaur, powerful beings driven into this world from elsewhere, and the Queen's servants can bring demonic creatures into battle. Calis's company repeatedly loses men while passing through occupied communities and escaping forces that are closing behind it. Erik has become one of the dependable soldiers on whom others rely; Roo's quick judgment is equally useful when a fight cannot be won directly. What began as a search for a missing patrol has become an effort to carry warning home before the invaders seal every route to the coast.

Story so far - through chapter 24 (this book)

Calis leads the survivors into the enemy's heartland, where they see a disciplined invasion force being prepared under the general Fadawah. Their disguise and mobility finally fail, forcing an assault and a running escape rather than a quiet withdrawal. Many members of the company die buying time for the rest. Calis, Erik, Roo, Nakor, and a reduced band reach the coast and escape Novindus with proof that the Emerald Queen's conquest is meant to supply an ocean-crossing invasion of the Kingdom. Pantathian priests and summoned demons are part of the threat, but the Queen's own origin and the ultimate purpose behind the army remain uncertain. The survivors return to report to Pug and the Kingdom's leaders. Erik accepts the soldier he has become, while Roo turns his attention toward building wealth in the short interval before war reaches them.

How does it end? (ending)

Calis's expedition survives long enough to learn that the conquest of Novindus is preparation for an assault on the Kingdom. The Emerald Queen's host is not a single nation but a deliberately assembled army under Fadawah, supported by Pantathian serpent priests, the alien Saaur, and creatures drawn from the demon realm. After infiltrating the enemy's domain and losing many of their companions, Calis, Erik, Roo, Nakor, and the remaining soldiers escape the closing trap and make the sea passage home. Their mission has succeeded only as reconnaissance: they possess warning and hard-won knowledge, not a way to stop the invasion. Erik returns no longer a blacksmith's apprentice or condemned fugitive but a trained soldier trusted by Calis. Roo returns equally changed and turns toward the commercial ambition that will define his next struggle. Pug and the Kingdom's leaders now know that an army large enough to overrun a continent is preparing to cross the ocean, while the precise nature of the woman called the Emerald Queen and the supernatural power behind her remain unresolved.
