In short (whole book)

Wellington orders Sharpe to retrain the Real Compañía Irlandesa, an undisciplined group of Irish soldiers in Spanish service commanded by the embittered Lord Kiely. Major Runciman oversees the assignment, while Harper, Captain Donaju, and Father Sarsfield help restore the men's confidence. French intelligence officer Pierre Ducos plans to make the company defect publicly, discrediting Britain and splitting the alliance. He works through Brigadier Guy Loup, whose troops terrorize the frontier, and through the celebrated partisan Juanita de Elía, Kiely's lover and a hidden French agent. Sharpe uncovers the plot as Masséna attacks Wellington around Fuentes de Oñoro. Kiely learns of Juanita's betrayal and dies trying to redeem himself. The Irish company fights for the allies instead of defecting, Runciman proves brave, and Sharpe defeats Loup. Wellington's army survives the French attempt to turn its flank. Ducos escapes the ruined scheme and recognizes Sharpe as a dangerous personal opponent.

Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)

Previously: Captain Richard Sharpe commands the South Essex light company, with Sergeant Patrick Harper as his closest friend. After Wellington's defenses stopped Masséna's invasion of Portugal, Sharpe and Harper were drawn into a failed river operation and then sent to Cádiz. Britain's minister Henry Wellesley was being blackmailed with letters stolen during an affair. Sharpe recovered the correspondence and ended Father Salvador Montseny's leverage, while misconduct within Lord Pumphrey's secret work was exposed. Sharpe then fought with General Thomas Graham at Barrosa, where the British defeated Marshal Victor's attack despite poor support from Spanish commander Manuel la Peña. The victory did not lift the siege of Cádiz. Sharpe returns to the main war with his rank intact and with Teresa Moreno still the central personal attachment created by his earlier mission for Spanish gold.

Story so far - through chapter 2 (this book)

Near the Spanish frontier, Sharpe is assigned to inspect and train the Real Compañía Irlandesa, Irish soldiers in Spanish service whose political symbolism exceeds their military usefulness. Lord Kiely commands the company but has allowed resentment and drink to replace discipline. Captain Donaju and Father Sarsfield want the men restored, while Major Runciman has been sent to supervise and report. Harper helps Sharpe approach soldiers who distrust both British authority and their own officers. Lady Kiely watches her husband's decline, and the partisan leader Juanita de Elía exerts a powerful influence over him.

Story so far - through chapter 4 (this book)

Brigadier Guy Loup's grey-coated French troops raid the frontier and use murder against civilians as a warning to anyone helping the allies. Sharpe's clash with Loup turns the training assignment into a personal contest. Behind the raids, French intelligence officer Pierre Ducos has identified the Irish company as a political weapon: a public defection would suggest that Irishmen prefer Napoleon to British rule and would embarrass Wellington before his Spanish allies. Juanita appears to support the allied cause and encourages Kiely's hostility toward Sharpe, while the company begins responding to practical drill under Harper and Donaju.

Story so far - through chapter 6 (this book)

Sharpe improves the Irish company's battlefield readiness despite Kiely's resistance. Runciman, initially treated as a comic staff burden, begins to accept real responsibility for the soldiers named in his reports. Evidence accumulates that Loup's violence and the pressure on Kiely serve a coordinated plan rather than simple raiding. Juanita's access to the company and her hold over Kiely become increasingly dangerous, though her reputation as a guerrilla leader protects her from immediate suspicion. Wellington meanwhile concentrates the allied army near Fuentes de Oñoro as Masséna attempts to relieve the isolated French fortress of Almeida.

Story so far - through chapter 8 (this book)

The battle around Fuentes de Oñoro opens as French columns attack the village and seek a route around Wellington's exposed right. Ducos's scheme advances inside the wider fighting: Juanita is revealed as a French agent, and Kiely's compromised command is meant to carry the Irish soldiers across at the moment that will cause maximum political damage. Kiely confronts the truth about his lover and the use made of his grievances. Sharpe, Harper, Donaju, Sarsfield, and Runciman work to keep the company together while Loup's brigade adds direct military force to the planned betrayal.

Story so far - through chapter 11 (this book)

Wellington withdraws his threatened right in difficult fighting and prevents Masséna from turning the allied position. Fuentes de Oñoro remains in allied hands, though neither army gains a decisive strategic victory. Ducos's political operation fails: Juanita's allegiance is exposed, Kiely dies trying to recover his honor, and the Real Compañía Irlandesa fights for the allies rather than defecting. Runciman shows genuine courage while helping Sharpe, Harper, Donaju, and Father Sarsfield hold the men together. Sharpe then hunts down and defeats Guy Loup, ending the grey brigade's local campaign of terror. Lady Kiely survives her husband, and Ducos survives the destruction of his plan, leaving the French intelligence officer with a personal reason to regard Sharpe as an enemy.

How does it end? (ending)

Ducos's scheme is exposed when Juanita's service to the French and her influence over Kiely can no longer be concealed. Kiely tries to recover his honor in battle and is killed, leaving Lady Kiely widowed. The Real Compañía Irlandesa does not carry out the defection intended to disgrace Britain; under Sharpe, Harper, Donaju, Father Sarsfield, and the unexpectedly resolute Runciman, its men fight instead of becoming a propaganda victory for France. During the confused struggle around Fuentes de Oñoro, Wellington escapes Masséna's attempt to turn the allied right and preserves the army, though the battle is costly and inconclusive in the larger campaign. Sharpe pursues Guy Loup and defeats him, ending the brigadier's campaign of terror. Runciman emerges with genuine courage rather than the empty reputation expected of him. Ducos survives the failure of his design, establishing a personal enemy who has learned how effectively Sharpe can disrupt French intelligence plans.
