Sharpe’s Triumph recap

In 1803 the renegade officer William Dodd massacres troops and civilians as he defects to the Maratha cause. Hector McCandless sets out to bring him to justice and recruits Richard Sharpe, now a sergeant after his service at Seringapatam. Hakeswill renews his campaign against Sharpe, while Dodd joins Anthony Pohlmann's European-trained army. McCandless and Sharpe pursue him through Wellesley's fast-moving Deccan campaign, crossing the lives of the French officer Joubert and his wife Simone. Wellesley finally attacks a far larger enemy force at Assaye. The British victory is bloody; McCandless is killed and Dodd escapes toward Gawilghur. In the battle Sharpe saves Wellesley's life. Wellesley makes him an ensign on the field, lifting him from sergeant to officer in a moment. The promotion rewards Sharpe's courage but leaves him stranded between the ranks, while both Dodd and Hakeswill remain alive.

Previously: Richard Sharpe was a private in the 33rd Regiment, trapped by poverty and persecuted by Sergeant Obadiah Hakeswill, an enemy from his earliest army days. After Hakeswill engineered a near-fatal flogging, Arthur Wellesley sent Sharpe and Lieutenant William Lawford into Tippoo Sultan's besieged capital. Sharpe survived, helped defeat a trap during the fall of Seringapatam, and secretly acquired jewels from the dead ruler. He chose the army over desertion and was promoted to sergeant, while Hakeswill survived to continue their feud.

William Dodd, a British officer in East India Company service, defects to the Maratha side and proves his commitment by destroying the troops and community he is abandoning. Hector McCandless survives the violence and takes responsibility for hunting him. Elsewhere Richard Sharpe is now a sergeant, promoted after his exceptional service at Seringapatam. He has learned to read and holds a secret store of Tippoo's jewels, some of which his friend Eli Lockhart helps him convert into money. That hidden independence is threatened when Hakeswill reappears. Hakeswill can still use army rules and false accusations against Sharpe, and their old hatred immediately resumes.

McCandless recruits Sharpe to help pursue Dodd, valuing his endurance, knowledge of soldiers, and proven loyalty. The hunt becomes part of Arthur Wellesley's wider campaign against the Maratha confederacy. Wellesley drives his army forward quickly, trusting disciplined troops and speed to offset the enemy's numbers. Dodd has meanwhile entered the service of Anthony Pohlmann, a Hanoverian commander whose infantry has been trained in European methods. Sharpe is pulled between the official mission and Hakeswill's efforts to take his property and place him under accusation, so that danger follows him from both armies.

The pursuit carries Sharpe and McCandless through the sieges and marches of Wellesley's Deccan campaign. Dodd uses the confusion of shifting forces to remain beyond their reach and strengthens his place under Pohlmann. Sharpe also encounters Captain Joubert, a French officer in Maratha service, and Joubert's wife Simone. Their vulnerability shows how civilians and foreign soldiers can be trapped by contracts and allegiance when armies move. Sharpe and Simone form a connection, but the mission gives Sharpe little freedom to protect anyone for long. Wellesley's army keeps advancing toward the concentrated Maratha force.

Wellesley learns the enemy's position near Assaye and decides to attack without waiting for all the British forces to unite. The decision commits a small army against a far larger force supported by numerous guns and Pohlmann's drilled infantry. McCandless remains intent on capturing Dodd, while Sharpe's pursuit has become personal as well as official. Dodd expects the coming battle to protect his escape or improve his standing. Hakeswill, never far from the campaign's disorder, continues seeking a moment when Sharpe can be robbed or killed without an honest witness. The opposing armies deploy around the rivers and village for a direct, costly contest.

The battle of Assaye begins with Wellesley's troops crossing into the ground held by the Maratha army. Enemy cannon and disciplined infantry inflict severe losses, and units become disordered as officers and men are killed. Wellesley repeatedly exposes himself while trying to keep the attack moving. Sharpe fights through the confusion with McCandless's purpose still in mind, searching for Dodd among troops who are withdrawing, rallying, and counterattacking. Pohlmann's carefully built army is pressed hard but not yet destroyed, and the outcome depends on whether the smaller British force can maintain discipline after its formations have been torn apart.

Wellesley's army wins at Assaye after a battle that costs it heavily. Hector McCandless is killed during the fighting, and Sharpe cannot complete the revenge and arrest he sought because William Dodd escapes the defeated force toward Gawilghur. Anthony Pohlmann also survives the collapse of his command. In the battle's crisis Sharpe saves Wellesley from enemy soldiers. Wellesley responds by granting the sergeant a commission as an ensign, promoting him directly from the ranks. The reward recognizes Sharpe's ability and courage, but it removes him from the enlisted world where he knows the rules and places him among officers who may despise his birth and poverty. Hakeswill remains alive as well, so promotion changes the balance of their feud without ending it.

At Assaye, Wellesley attacks a much larger Maratha army and wins after an exceptionally costly fight. Sharpe moves through the battle in pursuit of Dodd and is present when Hector McCandless is killed, turning the intelligence mission into a personal reckoning. Dodd nevertheless escapes the defeated army and heads toward the fortress of Gawilghur, so Sharpe's pursuit remains unfinished. Anthony Pohlmann also survives the ruin of the force he commanded. During the crisis Sharpe saves Arthur Wellesley's life. Wellesley rewards the act with a battlefield commission, raising the sergeant from the ranks to ensign. It is an extraordinary promotion but an uncertain gift: Sharpe lacks the money, education, and social standing expected of an officer, and he must now leave the fellowship and competence he had earned as an enlisted man. Hakeswill also survives, preserving the older enmity across Sharpe's change in status.
