Sherlock Holmes - The Speckled Band (Dramatized) recap

Helen Stoner asks Sherlock Holmes for help after being moved into the bedroom where her twin Julia died mysteriously two years before. Julia had heard a nightly whistle and died speaking of a speckled band; Helen has now heard the same sound. Their violent stepfather, Dr. Grimesby Roylott, would lose part of the sisters' inheritance when either married. At Stoke Moran, Holmes finds a ventilator opening into Roylott's room, a useless bell-pull hanging over the bed, and signs that the bed cannot be moved. He and Watson keep watch and intercept a venomous snake sent through the ventilator. Holmes drives it back, and it kills Roylott. The snake was both the murder weapon and the speckled band Julia saw, while the whistle was Roylott's signal for its return.

Roylott threatens Holmes, confirming his dangerous temper. At Stoke Moran, Holmes inspects Helen's room and notices that its bed is fixed beneath a bell-pull that operates nothing. Beside it is a ventilator opening not outdoors but into Roylott's room, where a saucer of milk and a secured chair provide further clues. Holmes and Watson wait in darkness. A venomous swamp adder crawls through the ventilator and down the cord; Holmes strikes it, sending it back to bite Roylott fatally. Roylott used the snake to kill Julia and meant to repeat the crime before Helen's marriage. His whistle summoned it home, and its markings explain Julia's final words. Helen is safe, and Holmes accepts responsibility for turning Roylott's weapon back upon him.
