Every entry below is hidden until you open it, and each names the chapter the character first appears in.
Harry Dresden (Protagonist)
Appears from the start
Chicago's only openly practicing professional wizard, who works as a private investigator and as an occasional consultant to the police on cases beyond ordinary explanation. A junior member of the White Council of wizards, he is powerful but perpetually short of money, quick with sardonic humor, and bound by a personal code that pushes him to protect people weaker than himself. He wields fire, force, and a range of prepared magic, and his refusal to abandon anyone in danger repeatedly puts him in the path of far stronger enemies.
Karrin Murphy (Supporting)
Appears from the start
A Chicago police officer who has led the department's Special Investigations unit, the division saddled with cases no one else will touch. Small, blonde, and formidably tough, she is a disciplined martial artist and a straight-arrow cop who prizes duty and loyalty above comfort. Over years of working with Harry she has become one of his most trusted allies, willing to stand beside him against threats far outside normal police work even at cost to her career.
Thomas Raith (Supporting)
Appears from the start
A strikingly handsome member of the White Court, a family of vampires who feed on human emotion, and one of Harry's closest allies. Though his nature drives him to hunger, he struggles to hold on to his conscience and to protect the people he cares about. Charming and privately burdened, he keeps his deepest ties hidden and moves easily between the mortal world and the supernatural one.
Molly Carpenter (Supporting)
Appears from the start
The eldest daughter of the Carpenter family and Harry's apprentice in the practice of magic. A gifted young woman with a talent for subtle magic of the mind, she is idealistic and headstrong, still learning the discipline and heavy responsibilities that come with wizardry under Harry's demanding, protective guidance.
Michael Carpenter (Supporting)
Appears from the start
A devout family man and one of the Knights of the Cross, mortals chosen to wield holy swords against the darkest supernatural evils. Calm, humble, and unshakably principled, he fights only when he must and shows mercy where he can. He is a steadfast friend to Harry and the father of a large family, including Molly.
Bob (Supporting)
Appears from the start
A spirit of air and intellect bound into a human skull in Harry's basement laboratory, and his irreplaceable magical reference and research assistant. Vast in knowledge and irreverent in personality, Bob helps Harry decode spells, potions, and supernatural mysteries, offering commentary that is equal parts brilliant and mischievous.
Mouse (Supporting)
Appears from the start
Harry's enormous dog, a Tibetan Temple Dog of unusual size and intelligence whose calm, watchful presence hides genuine supernatural power. Loyal and gentle with those he guards, Mouse is far more than an ordinary pet and has proven a protector in his own right.
