The ageless leader of the Grisha, who commands shadow and who created the Shadow Fold long ago with forbidden magic. In the previous book he sought to bind Alina's light to his will and turn the Fold into a weapon of conquest, and she barely escaped him. Ruthless, patient, and immensely powerful, he remains the greatest threat to Alina and to Ravka, and he has not given up his design for her or for the country.

The unsettling priest who served at the Ravkan court as the king's spiritual adviser and took a keen interest in the religious meaning others attached to the Sun Summoner. Watchful and hard to read, he moves according to his own beliefs and loyalties, and the fervent devotion ordinary people feel toward Alina as a saint plays into his aims.

A beautiful young Grisha with the rare gift of a Tailor, able to reshape appearance and flesh, who befriended Alina at the Little Palace. In the previous book she was revealed to have acted as the Darkling's agent within the royal household, a betrayal that complicates any trust between her and Alina going forward.

A proud and beautiful Grisha Squaller who commands wind and was among the elite trained at the Little Palace. Sharp-tongued and once openly contemptuous of Alina, she is a skilled and formidable fighter whose loyalties, in the wreckage the Darkling has left, are no longer simple.

A famous and daring privateer captain, clever, quick-tongued, and unpredictable, who sails the northern seas with a loyal and unusually capable crew. He crosses paths with Alina and Mal in the midst of danger and proves willing to defy even the most feared powers when it suits his own designs. His true purposes are not what they first appear, and he has ambitions far larger than piracy.

A giant of a young man in Sturmhond's crew, one of a pair of twins, and a Grisha as well as a warrior. Physically imposing and surprisingly thoughtful, fond of poetry, he serves the privateer captain with fierce loyalty and becomes one of the fighters drawn into Alina's cause.

Tolya's twin sister, a fierce and skilled warrior in Sturmhond's crew who fights with paired axes, and a Grisha like her brother. Sharp and watchful, she is devoted to the captain and, with Tolya, becomes part of the small band that gathers around the Sun Summoner.
