Rodrigues is intellectually confident, conscious of his vocation, and drawn to an image of Christ as noble and beautiful. He undertakes the forbidden mission to support persecuted Japanese Christians and discover what happened to Ferreira.

A poor, disheveled Japanese exile found in Macao, where he denies being Christian but desperately wants to return home. Frightened, evasive, and burdened by shame, Kichijiro agrees to guide the priests to Japan. Rodrigues mistrusts him while also recognizing that he may be their only route into the closed country.

A leading Christian in the village of Tomogi who helps conceal and supply the newly arrived priests. Mokichi approaches Rodrigues with reverence and accepts grave personal risk to maintain contact with the mission.

Courteous, patient, and politically calculating, Inoue argues that the foreign religion cannot take root properly in Japan. He prefers pressure that produces public apostasy and breaks communities over creating admired martyrs.

A Japanese official who translates and speaks for the authorities during Rodrigues's imprisonment. Sardonic and argumentative, he mocks the priest's assumptions about Japan and Christianity while pressing him to abandon a mission the government regards as both futile and disruptive.

A Christian prisoner whose baptismal name is Juan. He is one of the ordinary believers caught in the authorities' effort to reach the priests by making Japanese villagers bear the consequences of clerical resistance.
