Sydney is held in an Alchemist re-education facility: underground, windowless, deliberately starved of food, sleep, daylight and information, and worked on until she renounces vampires and confesses to corruption. She refuses, is punished, and then changes tactics and performs the conversion her captors want, buying herself movement, privileges and time. Outside, Adrian falls apart - off his medication, drinking, unable to reach her through dreams - while Eddie, Neil, Marcus, Sonya and Dimitri hunt for a facility the Alchemists have hidden for generations, and Zoe lives with having reported her own sister. Inside, Sydney finds another prisoner: Olive Sinclair, a Moroi restored from Strigoi, held for study rather than reform - and pregnant, by the dhampir Neil Raymond, which should be impossible. Sydney improvises magic out of nothing and gets them both out as the rescue party closes in from outside. Reunited and refusing to be separated again by anyone's rules, she and Adrian marry in Las Vegas.

Previously: Sydney Sage is an Alchemist - one of a secret human order that hides vampires from the world - who spent two years running the assignment that concealed Jill Dragomir, the Moroi queen's half-sister, at a human school in Palm Springs. In that time she discovered she is a witch, was trained in secret, learned from the defector Marcus Finch that the Alchemists' golden lily tattoo carries compulsion, and had hers broken so she could pass as loyal while being nothing of the kind. She also fell in love with Adrian Ivashkov, a royal Moroi spirit user who is psychically bonded to Jill, and they began a relationship that her order regards as the worst corruption possible. Adrian, meanwhile, stopped taking the medication that steadies his moods so he could use spirit for research into preventing Strigoi conversion, work carried out with Sonya Karp and Nina Sinclair. Sydney's younger sister Zoe, newly made an Alchemist and posted as her partner, discovered the relationship and reported it. At the end of the last book Sydney was seized in daylight, stripped of her charms and driven into the desert to be re-educated - a process she had already seen the results of in a man who came out of it hollow.

Sydney wakes in a cell with no window, no clock and no way of knowing where she is. The facility is run as a course of treatment: she is told she has been corrupted by vampires, that her family loves her, and that she will be released once she is well. Cooperation earns light, food and company; refusal earns darkness, hunger and hours of recorded instruction. The Alchemist directing her case is calm, kind in manner and completely immovable. Sydney refuses to confess to anything and is punished for it. Outside, Adrian has no idea where she has been taken. The Alchemists will not acknowledge holding her, the Moroi are not willing to start a war with them over one human girl, and Adrian - off his medication and drinking again - cannot reach her in dreams the way he can reach anyone else.

The pressure escalates. Sydney is deprived of sleep and food for long stretches, kept in the dark, and given confession scripts to repeat until they sound like her own. She works out that open defiance simply extends the process indefinitely, and begins to give her captors small, slow, believable concessions instead. She learns the shape of the place: other detainees, guards, the rhythm of the day, the fact that she is not the only person here and not the longest-serving. Outside, Eddie, Neil and the others start searching in earnest, Sonya lends her contacts, and Marcus Finch is brought in because he knows more about the Alchemists' internal machinery than anyone willing to speak to Moroi. Zoe, who set all of this in motion, is discovering that re-education is not what she was told it was.

Sydney commits fully to the performance: she confesses, repents, accepts the doctrine and behaves like a model patient. It works. She is moved out of isolation into the facility's social routine, allowed classes, meals and supervised contact, and she uses every inch of it to map the building and learn its habits. She befriends a long-term detainee who has been broken into genuine compliance and knows the place inside out. What she cannot get is anything to work magic with, so she starts learning to do without her charms and books. Outside, the search narrows, and Adrian's condition worsens: spirit without medication has him swinging between frantic activity and collapse, and Jill takes the worst of it through the bond.

Sydney discovers that the facility holds someone who is not there for re-education at all: Olive Sinclair, Nina's sister, a Moroi who was Strigoi and was restored, kept and examined as a specimen. Olive is also pregnant, and the father is Neil Raymond - a child between a restored Moroi and a dhampir, which everything the Moroi believe about themselves says cannot happen. It is a fact that would matter enormously to several groups, and the Alchemists have it locked underground. Sydney now has a second person to get out and a reason larger than herself. Outside, Adrian has stopped believing she is alive; drinking, unmedicated and grieving, he lets himself drift towards Nina, who understands spirit as nobody else does, and pulls back from it.

Sydney plans the escape from inside with nothing but improvised materials and the magic she can work without tools, while the search outside finally produces the facility's location. She has to weigh who can be brought out and who is too far gone to want to leave. Adrian pulls himself together enough to be useful, and the rescue is assembled: Marcus for the Alchemist side of it, Eddie, Neil, Dimitri and Sonya for the rest. Sydney's own preparations and the rescue party's timetable are set independently of each other, and both are running towards the same night, in the middle of a desert where there is nowhere to hide if either goes wrong.

Sydney gets herself and Olive out, working magic from improvised materials, and the escape meets the rescue party coming the other way. She has been in the facility for months, is physically wrecked, and never converted at all - the model patient was a performance kept up for the whole of it. Olive's pregnancy comes out, with Neil as the father, and with it the fact that a restored Moroi can conceive with a dhampir. Adrian, who had been unmedicated, drinking and briefly convinced she was gone - including a moment with Nina that he admits to - has her back. Rather than let the Alchemists, the Moroi or their families decide anything else for them, Sydney and Adrian go to Las Vegas and marry immediately. Sydney is now a fugitive from her own order, Jill is still hiding, Zoe has to live with what her report produced, and the news about Olive is a secret with very dangerous value.

Sydney gets herself and Olive Sinclair out of the re-education facility, using magic she improvises from whatever the place will let her hold, and the escape converges with the rescue Adrian, Marcus, Eddie, Neil, Dimitri and Sonya have finally been able to mount once the location was known. Olive is pregnant, and the father is Neil Raymond - a child conceived between a restored Moroi and a dhampir, which by everything the Moroi believe about themselves should not be possible, and which is exactly the kind of fact the Alchemists were holding her to study. Sydney comes out of the facility physically wrecked and clear-headed, having spent months performing a conversion she never underwent. Adrian, who had been drinking, using spirit without his medication and had come close to giving up on her - including a moment with Nina Sinclair that he regrets and admits to - is reunited with her. Neither of them intends to be separated again or to leave the decision to anyone else, so they marry in Las Vegas, immediately and without asking permission from the Alchemists, the Moroi or their own families. Sydney is now a fugitive from her order rather than a target of it, Jill is still in hiding, Zoe is left with what she set in motion, and Olive's pregnancy is a secret several very powerful groups would want.
