In short (whole book)

Sal Argento, a guarded young man whose silver eyes let him appraise objects and copy other people's abilities, enrolls at Quest Academy, where heroes are trained to reclaim demon-held land. During skill registration he accidentally fuses several of his powers into a unique top-tier crafting ability the Academy calls "Mythcrafter," and becomes the protege of the crafting lecturer Upgrade. Befriending the foresight-gifted Divinity, he is drawn into a secret disaster-prevention circle after glimpsing a vision of the city's destruction, and helps avert a coordinated demon-commander attack on the Academy. Building a fortune through appraisal and crafting, he leads a squad of overlooked underdogs to a perfect record in the first-year combat tournament. In the final rankings Divinity takes first place overall, Nero's daughter Erika Clifton second, and Sal third. The book ends with Sal having gained a second replicated ability, a mysterious dungeon-heart fragment to investigate, an open rivalry with Erika, and a public relationship with his friend Hannah - and, for the first time, a real sense of belonging.

Story so far - through chapter 9 (this book)

Sal Argento, the reserved son of an auction and appraisal family, travels by armored train across demon-infested "red zones" to enroll at Quest Academy, where the world's heroes are trained to reclaim lost territory. His silver eyes can appraise any object in fine detail and, unusually, observe and copy other people's essence abilities. At induction the headmaster, Quest, lays out the stakes: a strict merit-only first semester, with end-of-term rankings deciding class placement and the top performers earning a granted new ability and a place in an elite "Savior" program. Racing to a mixer, Sal secretly copies a stranger's speed power and vaults from a middling placement into the top twenty. He crosses paths with the powerful telepath Nero, and with Villa of the Reavers Guild, who tests his nerve and marks him as a preferred appraiser. Settling into his dorm, he befriends two low-ranked neighbors, Hannah and Kane. He then meets Divinity, a cadet whose foresight shows possible futures; she has quietly been using it to steer him toward a skill he will actually care about. The two agree to set their ranks aside and become genuine friends as Sal heads toward the ceremony where cadets formally register their abilities.

Story so far - through chapter 18 (this book)

At skill registration, Sal draws on a machine's near-limitless core to activate his perfected abilities all at once, and instinctively fuses three of them - appraisal, restoration, and a crafting power he had just copied - into something new. He collapses, and wakes to learn he is the first documented practitioner of an entirely new, top-tier crafting ability capable of creating mythic-grade items. The workshop's crafting lecturer, Upgrade - whose own power turns her gear into mechanical armor - takes him on as a mentor and gives him a place on her team. Sal crafts his first independent item, a pair of barrier gauntlets bonded to Hannah's defensive ability, and he and Hannah begin a casual relationship. He starts building a quiet reputation on the campus trading floor, agreeing to a scheme that splits his appraisal work and his crafting into two separate professional identities so each can be paid on its own terms. The tone darkens when the survival instructor, Sinclair, a shapeshifting hero, transforms into a demon and brutally overpowers several overconfident volunteers to show the cohort how unprepared they are for the danger beyond the barriers. Shaken, Sal sets himself a new goal: to craft armor that could withstand such a demon.

Story so far - through chapter 27 (this book)

Sal begins pushing his crafting hard, producing runed, rare-grade gear through sleepless nights, and confides to Divinity the true name of his fused ability - Mythcrafter - while her visions of a future ceremony turn up an unreadable code name, "Myth," that seems to point at him. Studying Divinity's foresight directly, he copies and vastly amplifies it - and is flooded with an overwhelming torrent of possible futures dominated by large-scale death and destruction. Following the strongest surviving branch, he sees the city's protective barriers failing one after another until the Academy, the guilds, and the city itself are overrun. He and Divinity report this to Quest, who reveals a secret disaster-prevention group, the Doom Society, that uses precognitives to head off calamities before they occur. A telepath reads Sal's vision directly and identifies several coming threats, the gravest being a currently-enrolled student whose power grows near death and who will spiral out of control if she is expelled without guidance. Sal resolves to prevent this by befriending her and helping her earn a place in the Savior class rather than fail out. Along the way he exposes and breaks a predatory healer's extortion racket, making a lasting enemy. The stretch closes as Sal fixes on the at-risk student's name on his planning board: Melanie Delahunt, the cadet nicknamed "The Necromancer."

Story so far - through chapter 36 (this book)

Sal starts formal combat class, where an essence-free arena strips every cadet of their powers; relying on raw improvisation, he unexpectedly beats a highly-ranked opponent. In administration class under the blunt former guildmaster Jez, he is pushed to treat heroism as a business and to earn his own Q-credit from nothing. At the cohort's first party, Sal and Divinity make contact with Melanie, revealing that the voices she hears are real and that her true power is necromancy, not the madness she feared; she begins, warily, to trust them. Victoria, a confident cadet, is shown to wield a far stronger compulsion ability than the simple charm she believed she had. Through it all Sal's bond with Divinity deepens. She also warns him of something troubling: in one foreseen branch, Sal did not merely copy an attacker's power but tore it away entirely, a capacity to permanently strip abilities that unsettles her enough to wonder, privately, whether he could one day become a calamity himself. The two nonetheless affirm they are best friends.

Story so far - through chapter 45 (this book)

Sal turns his combined appraisal and crafting talents into a genuine business. Working through the Reavers Guild and the trading-floor broker Vanessa, he restores a guild member's damaged sniper rifle - and, discovering he can loosen the internal "knots" that limit people's abilities, he permanently strengthens Upgrade and several workshop crafters, who help him push the rifle all the way to legendary grade with a built-in path toward mythic. He completes an exhausting overnight marathon appraising dozens of dungeon-clearance items, banking a record first-year fortune in Q-credit. His alias "Myth" gains a reputation beyond the Academy, and he cautiously reveals his dual identity to Vanessa, who becomes his advocate. Meanwhile his personal life tangles: his casual arrangement with Hannah continues even as Victoria needles them, and his closeness to Divinity grows as she confides that in every future she has seen for herself, she ends up alone.

Story so far - through chapter 54 (this book)

Sal and Divinity are formally welcomed into the Doom Society, a circle of precognitives and specialists who quietly avert disasters. Copying and amplifying Divinity's foresight in front of them, Sal not only outperforms her natural manifestation but glimpses a darker, separate catastrophe: a burning Academy tower, dying students, and the survival instructor Sinclair cut down. Quest and Nero withhold this vision from the wider group and route it to their governing council. Quest, tracking the real physical side effects Sal's ability-boosting left on its recipients, urges careful, monitored use rather than stopping - and quietly steers him toward thinking bigger than a crafter, toward a guildmaster's path that could raise the status of undervalued "support" heroes. Sal commits publicly to that ambition, and keeps improving both his essence control and, secretly, a second created ability. In skill class the cohort's powers are formally categorized, confirming Sal as the only "replication" student and revealing hidden facets of others' abilities. Combat class then announces an end-of-month team tournament: the cohort splits into twenty five-person squads captained in reverse rank order, so the lowest-ranked pick first. Stung by public mockery from lower-ranked cadets - among them the student who confronted Sal on his very first day - Divinity resolves to set aside her principles and use every advantage, including her foresight, to make sure her and Sal's teams dominate.

Story so far - through chapter 63 (this book)

Drafting last, Sal assembles a squad written off as hopeless - Barry, Jack, Blathnaid, and Anthony, all low-ranked - and, with Divinity, drills them nightly on formations and sparring. The stakes are real: the tournament's top six teams advance, while the bottom six face relegation. The group improves fast: Barry stops grumbling and throws himself into training, Jack and Blathnaid show unexpected crafting talent, and Anthony reveals an ability that temporarily raises the grade of any item he actively holds. Sparring against Divinity, Sal fights her to a draw using a defensive ability he had secretly copied from the combat instructor and rehearsed for weeks. He designs practical gear for the whole squad - shield guards, an offense gauntlet design, mobility boots - and commits his own fortune to outfitting them. Villa of the Reavers Guild, shown the finished legendary rifle, opens talks toward a mentored trainee-guild arrangement, while Jez publicly reveals Sal's record Q-credit earnings to his class. Divinity privately reveals that Barry is hiding an extraordinary ability of his own - one her foresight has only ever shown him using in a single life-or-death moment tied to the foreseen tower catastrophe. Quest confirms Sal's earlier enhancements left no lasting harm, and floats a sensitive long-term request: that Sal one day deliberately combine several existing abilities into a wholly new skill for the Academy's benefit.

Story so far - through chapter 72 (this book)

As the tournament nears, Sal finishes the team's gear - including a reforged blade that unexpectedly carries the combat instructor's counter-ability and proves devastating in Anthony's grade-boosting hands - but Divinity's foresight turns grim: the catastrophe she and Sal once glimpsed is now set to strike this very weekend. Her renewed visions confirm the worst: the coming attack is not a random breach but a deliberate, coordinated strike led by a humanoid demon "commander," hunting specific students - and it seems to counter every plan the faculty makes almost instantly. Nero reasons that the commander is not truly precognitive but is directly reading and interfering with Divinity's foresight. The faculty's answer is a decoy: with Nero's telepathy and Sal channeling the foresight framework, Barry finally uses his hidden power openly, fabricating a convincing false vision to mislead the commander while real strike teams close in. The ruse works, pinning the commander's location. A combined guild-and-faculty force - including Anna Sakura, who can nullify essence, alongside Sinclair, Jez, Villa, and even Upgrade and Forge, who join out of concern for Sal - descends into the tunnels. They destroy the demon's amplifying "dungeon heart" and kill the commander, ending the crisis before the tournament with no shown losses. The foreseen burning tower never comes to pass. Watching from safety, Sal is humbled at how far beyond him even "support" heroes prove to be in real combat.

Story so far - through chapter 81 (this book)

With the crisis averted, the tournament proceeds. Sal openly admits to his inner circle that he is "Myth," and guild scouts begin circling him. Because his team's first match is against Divinity's, the two arrange a staged forfeit, Barry dressing the "loss" up as a real fight while Sal lends her squad spare gear. From there Sal's underdog team wins fight after fight through preparation, crafted equipment, illusion tactics, and Anthony's supercharged blade, climbing to the top of the standings undefeated. They settle a personal grudge by crushing the team of the cadet who confronted Sal on day one, with Sal knocking him out himself, and Blathnaid earns public recognition by defeating a high-ranked controller almost single-handedly. Nero's daughter, Erika, is glimpsed dominating the gold cohort. Entering their nineteenth and final fight at eighteen wins and no losses, against a dangerous explosive-power captain, Sal is caught completely off guard: the fight begins with a point-blank blast to his face that leaves him bleeding and disoriented as further explosions rain down and the outcome hangs in the balance.

Story so far - through chapter 86 (this book)

Jack shields Sal at the cost of a broken arm, buying him time to recover; Sal breaks through the enemy's defenses and Jack lands the finishing blow, giving the team a perfect record - the only undefeated team in the silver cohort. In the grading that follows, Sal's team narrowly outscores the only other flawless team, captained by Nero's daughter, Erika Clifton, who is fully named and shown glaring at Sal with open hostility. The full semester-one academy rankings are then revealed: Divinity Khan places first overall, a result even her foresight had not predicted, displacing Erika to second, with Sal third; his whole circle finishes safely clear of the students at risk of failing out. At a private gathering for the top rankers, Sal meets a new lecturer, Beck, and replicates his people-reading "analysis" ability on the spot. Given a pick from dungeon-recovered prizes, he passes over finished gear for a mysterious fragment of a destroyed dungeon heart that even his abilities cannot read, meaning to study it. Divinity claims the evening's most coveted item partly to deny it to Erika. The book closes with Hannah greeting Sal openly in front of his friends, and Sal reflecting that, after one month, he finally belongs at Quest Academy - his standing now formalized as a tournament champion ranked third in his year. Left open for the next book are Erika's unexplained hostility, the nature of dungeon hearts and the fragment Sal took, the smarter demon suspected of directing the commander, and Kane's quiet decline in rank, which Sal feels guilty for having neglected.

How does it end? (ending)

The book ends at the close of Sal's first month at Quest Academy. His underdog team wins the first-year combat tournament outright with a flawless record, narrowly outscoring the only other perfect team, captained by Nero's daughter, Erika Clifton. In the full semester ranking that follows, Divinity Khan is revealed as the new top-ranked first-year - a result her own foresight failed to predict - displacing Erika to second, with Sal third; every member of his close circle finishes safely clear of the students facing expulsion, though his estranged friend Kane keeps sliding since an early injury. Erika regards Sal and especially Divinity with open, unexplained hostility. At a private gathering for top rankers, Sal replicates a new "analysis" ability from an incoming lecturer, Beck, and chooses, as his prize, an unreadable fragment of a destroyed dungeon heart to study later. Divinity claims the evening's most coveted item partly to keep it from Erika. Hannah reunites with Sal openly in front of his friends. His standing is formalized: alias "Myth," Mythcrafter ability rated Master, third in his year and a tournament champion, with scouting interest from rival guilds. Major threads carry into the next book: Erika's hostility and what drives it, the nature and origin of dungeon hearts and the fragment Sal took, the smarter demon suspected of having directed the defeated commander, and whether Sal reaches the elite Savior class.
