Every entry below is hidden until you open it, and each names the chapter the character first appears in.

Prince Arutha (Protagonist)

Appears from the start

Prince of Krondor and ruler of the Western Realm, younger brother to King Lyam. Dark, lean and dry-humoured, a veteran of nine years of war and a superb swordsman, he is a careful and suspicious administrator who trusts evidence rather than assurances. He has returned to Krondor to marry Princess Anita, and he is not comfortable with ceremony.

Princess Anita (Supporting)

Appears from the start

Daughter of the late Prince Erland and heir of Krondor in her own right, about to marry Arutha. Slight, self-possessed and considerably tougher than she appears, she spent her girlhood as a political hostage and knows the city's court better than her husband-to-be does.

Jimmy (Supporting)

Also known as Jimmy the Hand, Squire James

Appears from the start

Formerly the best young thief in the Mockers, Krondor's thieves' guild, and now a squire of the Prince's court, a promotion he wears lightly. Quick-witted, quick-fingered and incurably curious, he keeps his old contacts in the sewers and back alleys and hears things the palace never would.

Duke Martin Longbow (Supporting)

Appears from the start

Duke of Crydee and Warden of the West, formerly the duchy's huntmaster, and half-brother to the King and the Prince through their father. Quiet, watchful and happiest in a forest, he was raised in part among the elves of Elvandar and is still the finest archer in the Kingdom. He has come east for his brother's wedding.

King Lyam (Supporting)

Appears from the start

King of the Isles, eldest of the conDoin brothers, crowned at the end of the Riftwar. Fair, open-tempered and conciliatory by nature, he is trying to knit together a kingdom whose eastern and western nobles spent the war distrusting each other.

Princess Carline (Supporting)

Appears from the start

The conDoin brothers' sister, once the sheltered daughter of Crydee and now a woman with her own opinions and no patience for being managed. She has come to Krondor for the wedding with the singer she married.

Laurie (Supporting)

Appears from the start

A singer of Tyr-Sog who was a prisoner on the Tsurani world during the war and came home to marry into the royal family. Talkative, observant and better travelled than most of the court, he is still more comfortable in a taproom than at a state dinner.

Gardan (Supporting)

Appears from the start

Knight-Marshal of Krondor, commander of the Prince's armies, a Keshian-born soldier who rose from the ranks in Crydee's garrison. Steady, blunt and entirely loyal, he has served the conDoins since Arutha was a boy.

Murmandamus (Antagonist)

Appears from the start

A moredhel chieftain in the Northlands who has drawn the scattered dark elf clans together under one banner. His followers hail him as the figure their prophecies promised, the one who will lead them south to reclaim the lands they say were theirs, and he commands a loyalty and a discipline the moredhel have never shown before.

Pug (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 3

The orphan of Crydee who became the most powerful magician in the Kingdom, trained on the Tsurani world and elevated there as a Great One. He came home at the end of the Riftwar with his wife Katala and has spent the peace trying to give magic in the Kingdom a respectable home of its own rather than a magician's tower and a bad reputation.

Baru (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 9

A Hadati hillman of the mountains of Yabon, a hunter and warrior of a people who keep their own customs and their own gods. His village was destroyed by a moredhel raiding force, and he has sworn a blood oath against the chieftain who led it. He is formidable in the hills and single-minded about his purpose.

Roald (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 9

A veteran mercenary and an old travelling companion of Laurie's from the years before the war. Practical, cynical about causes and paid work alike, and reliable in a fight, he joins the Prince's party because his friend asks him to.

Brother Dominic (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 10

A monk of the order of Ishap at the abbey of Sarth, whose library is the greatest collection of records in the world. A former soldier before he took orders, he is both a capable fighting man and the person best able to find what the Prince's party needs among the abbey's shelves.

Kulgan (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 13

The Duke of Crydee's old magician, Pug's first master, stout and pipe-smoking and as sceptical as ever. He has followed his former apprentice into the new academy, where he argues about method with men who were trained on another world entirely.

Tomas (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 14

The boy from Crydee's kitchens who took the white and gold armour of the Valheru and became something between a man and a Dragon Lord. He has made peace with the two natures he carries and now shares the rule of the elven forest with its queen, respected by the elves and still, to human eyes, unnervingly other.

Queen Aglaranna (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 14

Queen of Elvandar, ruler of the elves and their spellweavers, who took a human consort at the end of the Riftwar. She governs a people who are slow to change and who are still adjusting to what her choice has made of their court.
