In short (whole book)

Half-elf contractor Val hunts a wyvern and clashes with Zavryd, a dragon enforcing the judgments of the Dragon Justice Court. When her Army supervisor Willard develops a rapidly worsening illness, Val traces it to dark-elf alchemy while an audit leaves her wanted by federal authorities. With Sindari, Dimitri, Nin, her mother, and vampire alchemist Zoltan helping, she enters a hidden complex beneath Lake Union to collect ingredients for an antidote. The dark elves admit they poisoned Willard to remove Val as an obstacle. Val escapes captivity, kills their high priestess, rescues Jennifer from sacrifice, and flees as Zavryd attacks the lair and kills the alchemist. Zavryd recovers his stolen artifact, saves Val from a kraken, and supplies blood for the cure. Zoltan treats Willard, who improves, clears Val, and exposes evidence of corruption behind the audit. Val returns to duty and therapy, considers reconnecting with Amber, and sees that Zavryd remains in Seattle.

Story so far - through chapter 6 (this book)

Val, a half-elf contractor who hunts dangerous magical beings for the Army, enters an Oregon cave to kill the last wyvern responsible for a massacre. Her summoned tiger ally Sindari warns her that a dragon is approaching. The dragon, Zavryd, intends to take the wyvern before the Dragon Justice Court, but Val kills it rather than surrender it. Zavryd destroys her Jeep during the pursuit, identifies her mixed ancestry, and warns her not to interfere again. Back in Seattle, Val tells weapon maker Nin about the encounter and reluctantly attends therapy for fatigue, breathing trouble, and stress. She explains that threats linked to her work have led her to keep her former husband and daughter at a distance. Her professional situation also deteriorates. Willard, her usual Army supervisor, is suddenly hospitalized, and an acting lieutenant arrives to audit the unit, challenge Val's expenses, and suspend new assignments. After receiving only part of her expected combat payment, Val takes the lieutenant's sedan and heads to the hospital to learn what happened to Willard.

Story so far - through chapter 11 (this book)

Willard has an aggressive illness accompanied by an unexplained infection. Val senses a magical presence near her abdomen and learns that Willard's apartment was found unlocked shortly before her pain began. Searching the apartment with Sindari, Val finds a faintly magical vial hidden in the garbage disposal. A stealthy elf bombs the building and escapes, while Val evacuates residents and saves Willard's cat. Val takes the vial to her estranged mother, who determines that its heat-revealed sigil is not Elvish and guides her toward a hidden magical settlement. A werewolf pack attacks on the way, forcing Val and Sindari to fight until Zavryd arrives and captures the wanted pack leader. Sindari then explains that warriors from Del'noth are bound to figurines under an ancestral agreement with dragons. Inside the concealed settlement, a lava golem identifies the vial's marking as dark-elf alchemy. Zavryd asserts that his court has authority across worlds and proposes using Val to attract criminals. Val refuses, but she now has a concrete lead on the substance harming Willard.

Story so far - through chapter 17 (this book)

Federal agents accuse Val and Willard of misusing Army funds and try to arrest Val. She escapes with her weapons, and Dimitri, her mother's quarter-dwarf tenant, disables the agents' vehicles and drives her toward Seattle. Willard confirms that dark elves operate beneath the city. Nin directs Val to Zoltan, a vampire alchemist in Woodinville, but suspected dark elves are already watching his property. Zoltan identifies the substance as a slow-acting formula designed to conceal both its maker and delivery. A possible treatment requires blood from Willard, the dark elf who brewed it, and the particular kraken whose blood was used. Zoltan also demands dragon blood as his price. The meeting becomes more dangerous when Dimitri vanishes into Zoltan's haunted carriage house and armed dark elves arrive. Val secures Dimitri's release by offering the house one of his collectibles. With five attackers surrounding them and Sindari wounded while delaying pursuit, Val and Dimitri use an enchanted incendiary device to destroy the attackers' cover and escape. Val remains a fugitive and must now enter dark-elf territory to obtain the samples before Willard's condition becomes irreversible.

Story so far - through chapter 22 (this book)

Zavryd orders Val to recover a stolen dragon artifact and two dark-elf criminals, then imposes a magical urge that pushes her to obey him. Val resists the compulsion and follows reports of a Lake Union monster, reasoning that the dark elves are drawing in the kraken needed for their formula. She locates a concealed underwater entrance and infiltrates the tunnel complex alone. Inside, she finds kraken blood, learns that a midnight ritual is being prepared, and discovers a chamber holding Zavryd's artifact and a captive teenage girl. Val and Sindari confront the alchemist and obtain some of her blood. The alchemist admits that Willard was poisoned because removing her would leave Val unable to interfere with the dark elves' plans. Dark-elf mages then overpower them, force Sindari back into his figurine, confiscate Val's weapons and samples, and bind Val in the laboratory as toxic smoke worsens her breathing. Val secretly retains two small charms, uses one while drawing on an unexpected surge of power, and breaks free. She recovers the alchemist's records and replacement ingredients just as Zavryd attacks the ritual chamber, leaving her a chance to rescue the captive.

Story so far - through chapter 25 (this book)

Val restores her breathing with an improvised alchemical mixture, recovers her gear, and reaches the ritual as Zavryd assaults the complex. She kills the high priestess before the captive girl, Jennifer, can be sacrificed. Zavryd kills the alchemist, and Val escapes with Jennifer, the cure materials, and the stolen dragon artifact while the tunnels collapse. Zavryd clears their route and takes back the artifact. Val pilots a dark-elf submarine to shore and gets Jennifer to safety, but a surviving elf directs the kraken against her. Zavryd drives it away, gives Val the blood Zoltan demanded, and heals her crossbow wound. Val rejects his offer of Dragon Justice Court work and disputes his authority on Earth. Dimitri takes Jennifer home, while Val, Sindari, and Zoltan enter Willard's hospital wing. Zoltan uses the gathered samples and Willard's blood to administer an antidote. Willard reveals evidence linking Lieutenant Sudo and General Nash to the campaign against her office. By the epilogue, Willard is improving, Val is cleared and restored to duty, and Sudo has been reassigned. Val resumes therapy and considers rebuilding ties with Amber. Zavryd remains active over Seattle.

How does it end? (ending)

Val gets Jennifer out of the collapsing dark-elf complex and safely home. Zavryd recovers the stolen artifact, drives away the kraken, heals Val's wound, and provides the dragon blood Zoltan requires. Zoltan combines the gathered samples with Willard's blood and administers an antidote. Willard improves enough to clear Val with the police, restore her assignments, and continue pursuing evidence that General Nash was bribed to close her office. Lieutenant Sudo is reassigned. Val resumes therapy, receives a government Jeep, and decides to work on rebuilding her relationship with Amber. Sindari and Dimitri remain her allies, but Sindari is still bound by an ancestral agreement with dragons. The surviving dark-elf fugitives remain unaccounted for, and Zavryd is still above Seattle after Val refuses his offer to work for the Dragon Justice Court. Their dispute over his authority and his intention to use her as bait remain unresolved.
