Lindon's forbidden Blackflame arts land him and Yerin in the service of the Skysworn, the Blackflame Empire's elite enforcers, just as a far greater catastrophe arrives: the Bleeding Phoenix, a dreadgod whose awakening draws hordes of dreadbeasts, turns toward the empire. The Phoenix is finally driven off, leaving the region devastated, and in the chaos an ancient hidden realm is opened and Lindon is swept into it alone, separated from his companions as the book ends.

Previously: Lindon rose from a scorned Unsouled in the doomed, isolated land of Sacred Valley, set on his path by the powerful Suriel, and left home with the sword artist Yerin, who carries a dangerous blood-madra inheritance. In the wider world they came under the patronage of Eithan Arelius, the eccentric and startlingly powerful head of the Arelius family, and Lindon took up soulsmithing while making a lasting enemy of the masked spear artist Jai Long. Guided by Eithan into the Blackflame Empire, Lindon learned the forbidden and destructive Path of Black Flame and bonded with Orthos, an embittered ancient tortoise who walks the same ruinous road. He defeated Jai Long in a decisive duel, dramatically raising his standing, but his open use of an outlawed power drew the attention of the empire's elite enforcers, the Skysworn, leaving him a far stronger but newly endangered figure as a larger crisis began to gather.

The consequences of Lindon's forbidden arts collide with a far larger emergency: a dreadgod, one of the titanic monsters whose awakenings devastate the world, is turning toward the Blackflame Empire. Rather than being simply punished for wielding outlawed Blackflame, Lindon and Yerin are drawn into service with the Skysworn, the empire's elite enforcers, as every available power is marshaled against the coming disaster. The approaching dreadgod, the Bleeding Phoenix, is a force beyond anything they have faced, drawing hordes of lesser dreadbeasts before it. For Yerin the threat is doubly dangerous, since her own blood-madra inheritance resonates uncomfortably with the Phoenix's blood-related power. Lindon throws himself into the empire's defense, aware that his hard-won strength is still small against a catastrophe of this scale.

As the Bleeding Phoenix nears, the empire's cities come under siege from waves of dreadbeasts, and Lindon, Yerin, Eithan, and the empire's forces fight to hold them. Lindon's strength grows under the pressure, but the crisis makes plain how far he still has to climb. The danger to Yerin sharpens: the closer the Bleeding Phoenix comes, the more her bound blood-madra presence stirs and strains against her control, threatening to turn her own inheritance against her. Emperor Naru Huan and the Naru family take direct part in the defense, and Eithan reveals more of his considerable power as the situation worsens. The defenders can hope only to endure and protect as many people as possible, since a dreadgod is not a thing that lesser artists can defeat outright.

The disaster reaches its peak as the Bleeding Phoenix itself descends on the empire, and the defenders are pushed to their limits simply to survive it and shield the people in its path. The specific danger to Yerin comes due: her bound blood-madra presence is drawn toward the Phoenix and torn from her, an event that gravely harms her and drives home how completely outmatched they all are against a dreadgod. Lindon, Eithan, Orthos, and the empire's greatest artists spend everything to blunt the catastrophe rather than to win against it. Amid the chaos of the Phoenix's assault, hidden things are stirred loose, and the fighting exposes secrets and dangers that had lain buried, setting up consequences that will reach well beyond the immediate battle.

By the book's close, the Bleeding Phoenix is driven off rather than destroyed, moving on and leaving the region battered and much of it in ruin, its people reeling from a catastrophe they could only endure. Yerin survives the loss of her bound blood-madra presence but is gravely weakened by it, and the ordeal makes unmistakably clear that Lindon and his companions need far greater power than they now possess.
