Ichabod Crane, an ambitious and deeply superstitious schoolmaster in the Hudson Valley settlement of Sleepy Hollow, courts Katrina Van Tassel, the wealthy farmer's daughter. His chief rival is the athletic prankster Brom Bones. After a party filled with local ghost stories, Katrina appears to reject Ichabod, who rides home alone and encounters a headless rider resembling the legendary Hessian spirit. The rider chases him to the churchyard bridge and strikes him with what seems to be a severed head. Ichabod disappears; only his borrowed horse, his hat, and a smashed pumpkin are found. Brom soon marries Katrina and appears amused by mention of the pumpkin, implying that he impersonated the ghost to frighten his rival away. A later report says Ichabod built a new life elsewhere, but Sleepy Hollow keeps the haunting explanation alive.

Sleepy Hollow is a secluded Hudson Valley community steeped in tales of apparitions, above all a headless Hessian soldier said to ride at night. Ichabod Crane, the district's thin, learned, and highly superstitious schoolmaster, becomes interested in Katrina Van Tassel, the only child of a prosperous farmer. Winning her would also give him access to the comfortable estate he admires. His rival Brom Bones, a powerful horseman and practical joker, cannot intimidate him into abandoning the courtship. At an autumn party at the Van Tassel farm, Ichabod eats lavishly, dances with Katrina, and listens to frightening local stories. After a private conversation with her ends badly, he rides home on an old borrowed horse. A huge, silent rider pursues him and appears to carry its head on the saddle. At the churchyard bridge the figure throws the head, knocking Ichabod down. He vanishes from the community. Searchers find his hat and a broken pumpkin, while Brom's later amusement suggests that he played the ghost and drove his rival away. Brom marries Katrina. Although a traveler eventually reports that Ichabod survived and prospered elsewhere, local tradition favors the tale that supernatural forces took him.

After Katrina apparently rejects him, Ichabod rides home through the places featured in the evening's ghost stories. A large, silent rider follows him, and Ichabod becomes convinced that it is the Headless Horseman. He races for the bridge beside the churchyard, believing the apparition will vanish there, but the rider hurls its severed head at him. Ichabod is never seen in Sleepy Hollow again. Searchers find Gunpowder without his saddle and discover Ichabod's hat beside a shattered pumpkin. Brom Bones later marries Katrina and reacts knowingly whenever the pumpkin is mentioned, strongly suggesting that he staged the pursuit. A traveler eventually reports that Ichabod survived, left the region, studied law, entered politics, and became a judge. The people of Sleepy Hollow nevertheless preserve the supernatural version of his disappearance, and the abandoned schoolhouse acquires its own haunted reputation.
