Sojourn characters

By R.A. Salvatore

Every entry below is hidden until you open it, and each names the chapter the character first appears in.

Drizzt Do'Urden (Protagonist)

Appears from the start

A drow who has left the Underdark entirely and climbed to the surface world, having renounced his people, his family and their goddess. He is a superb fighter with two scimitars, but on the surface almost every advantage he has is gone: daylight blinds and burns him, he cannot read the weather or the seasons, and his appearance guarantees that anyone who sees him will assume the worst. What he wants is not safety but a place where he can be judged by what he does.

Guenhwyvar (Supporting)

Appears from the start

A great black panther summoned from another world by an onyx figurine Drizzt carries, able to remain for a limited time before she must return and rest. She is Drizzt's oldest friend and, in the first surface years, his only one.

The Thistledown Family (Minor)

First appears in chapter 4

A human farming family working land near the village of Maldobar on the northern frontier: parents, grandfather and several children, ordinary and unguarded. Drizzt watches them from the treeline for weeks, drawn by the domestic life he has never had and certain that showing himself would only terrify them.

Ulgulu (Antagonist)

First appears in chapter 5

A barghest, a predatory creature from another plane growing toward its full power in a lair above the valley. It gains strength by killing, wears a monstrous shape, and treats the human settlements below as a larder rather than a threat.

Kempfana (Antagonist)

First appears in chapter 5

Ulgulu's brother and fellow barghest, junior in the pairing and impatient with it. He shares the lair, the servants and the appetite.

Tephanis (Minor)

First appears in chapter 6

A quickling in the barghests' service, a tiny sprite who moves and speaks so fast that his words run together into a single stream. He scouts, carries messages and takes a malicious pleasure in arranging trouble for others.

Roddy McGristle (Antagonist)

First appears in chapter 7

A frontier bounty hunter, large, loud and well known in the region, who tracks men for money with the help of a trained dog. He is not fussy about evidence, and once he has settled on a quarry no correction reaches him.

Kellindil (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 10

A surface elf archer of the northern woods who joins the hunt for the dark elf. Unlike the humans on the trail he actually studies the tracks and the pattern of what his quarry does and does not do, and what he finds does not match the crime he was told about.

Montolio DeBrouchee (Supporting)

Also known as Mooshie

First appears in chapter 14

An old human ranger, blind for years, who lives alone in a fortified grove high in the mountains and keeps watch on the orc tribes below. He navigates by hearing, memory and the animals who live with him, fights well enough to embarrass men half his age, and judges people entirely by conduct. He follows the goddess Mielikki and has been waiting a long time for someone worth teaching.

Hooter (Minor)

First appears in chapter 14

An owl who lives in Montolio's grove and serves as one of the old ranger's eyes, carrying scouting reports back to him in a language the two of them have worked out between them.

Graul (Antagonist)

First appears in chapter 16

The chieftain of the orc tribes of the mountains below Montolio's grove, held in check for years by the old ranger's watchfulness and looking for any excuse or ally that would let him move.

Dinin Do'Urden (Antagonist)

First appears in chapter 18

Drizzt's surviving brother and the chief warrior of House Do'Urden, sent up out of the Underdark with a hunting party to finish the family's long-standing business. He has no interest in the surface beyond the errand.

Vierna Do'Urden (Antagonist)

First appears in chapter 18

Drizzt's sister, the priestess who raised him, now the surviving religious authority of a ruined house. Restoring House Do'Urden means delivering Drizzt to the Spider Queen, and she is the one who insists the hunt continue onto the surface.

Bruenor Battlehammer (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 22

A dwarf king in Icewind Dale, leader of a clan that mines the valley beneath Kelvin's Cairn near the ten frontier towns. Gruff, blunt and entirely unimpressed by reputations, he takes people at the value of their work and is stubborn enough to argue a whole region into changing its mind.

Catti-brie (Minor)

First appears in chapter 23

A human girl orphaned in a raid and raised by Bruenor as his own daughter among the dwarves. Still a child, curious and without any of the frontier's inherited fears, she is the first person in Icewind Dale to treat the dark elf as simply another neighbor.
