Son characters

By Lois Lowry

Every entry below is hidden until you open it, and each names the chapter the character first appears in.

Claire (Protagonist)

Appears from the start

A gentle, determined girl in the same rigidly controlled community from the start of the series, assigned the role of Birthmother, or Vessel, to produce infants for the society. She is only fourteen when she bears her first child. Unlike others around her, she is not fully numbed to feeling, and she forms a fierce, forbidden attachment to the son she was never meant to know. That love becomes the driving purpose of her life.

Gabe (Supporting)

Also known as Gabriel

Appears from the start

Claire's infant son, the baby she bears in the controlled community and is forbidden to keep. In that society children are assigned to family units, and this small, restless infant does not thrive on its rigid schedule. He is the child at the center of Claire's search, and the thread that ties her story to the wider world of the series.

Jonas (Supporting)

Appears from the start

A young man, known from earlier in the series, who once fled the controlled community as a boy carrying an infant to safety and later became the wise leader of a welcoming settlement. He is marked by pale eyes and a gift for perception. Claire's search will eventually cross paths with the community he guides.

Einar (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 5

A young man in a remote, isolated settlement, patient and kind, who helps Claire rebuild her strength and teaches her the difficult skill of climbing the steep cliff that walls the village off from the world beyond. He bears the marks of a hard past of his own and understands, better than most, the danger of wanting something badly enough to pay any price for it.

Trademaster (Antagonist)

First appears in chapter 4

A smooth, sinister figure who offers people the thing they most desire in exchange for something of themselves, always at a hidden and ruinous cost. He deals in longing and weakness, and his bargains bind those who accept them. He is the shadow that has moved through the wider world of the series, and he stands between Claire and what she seeks.

Kira (Supporting)

Appears from the start

A young woman known from earlier in the series, born with a twisted leg and gifted at weaving, who once uncovered the lies of her harsh home village and chose to work for change. She is now part of the wider community of settlements where much of the later story unfolds.
