A dhampir in her last weeks at St. Vladimir's, back at school after abandoning it and now finishing the trials that decide whether she graduates as a guardian. She is bonded to Lissa Dragomir and carries the darkness Lissa's spirit magic produces. Since returning from Russia she has been living with the knowledge that the man she loved, now Strigoi, survived her attempt to end him and has written to say he intends to find her.

The last of the royal Dragomir line, Rose's bondmate, and one of the strongest spirit users alive. She has forgiven Rose for leaving and is preparing for college and for the political weight her name carries, while quietly getting better at healing, compulsion and everything else spirit offers. She is with Christian again, and she is more willing than she used to be to break rules for people she loves.

The guardian Rose loved, awakened as a Strigoi during the raid on the Academy and not destroyed by the stake Rose put through him in Russia. He is intelligent, patient and unhurried, he has said in writing that he will come for her, and he has never once had to be told twice how to reach someone.

A royal Moroi spirit user, the queen's great-nephew, and now Rose's boyfriend. He reads auras, walks into dreams, and is entirely aware that he is competing with a memory. He has cut down his drinking for her, which costs him more than he lets on, since alcohol is the only thing that reliably quiets what spirit does to him.

A Moroi with fire magic, Lissa's boyfriend, and by now a practised troublemaker in his own right. He has spent a year teaching other Moroi to fight with their magic and is unimpressed by anyone who tells him it cannot be done.

A dhampir who graduates alongside Rose, disciplined, capable and marked by having survived both Spokane and the attack on the school. He is the friend Rose calls when something has to be done properly and quietly.

Rose's mother, a celebrated guardian, present for her daughter's graduation and considerably more interested in her life than she once was. The two of them are on speaking terms now, which neither entirely trusts.

The reigning Moroi queen and Adrian's great-aunt, who dislikes Rose personally and makes no secret of it. She is pushing legislation through the Council that would send Moroi novices into guardian service at sixteen, which has enraged much of dhampir society.

The guardian who runs security at the Royal Court, unsentimental and openly unimpressed by Rose's record. He controls her assignments and uses that control freely.

A guardian at the Royal Court who spends every free hour searching for a Moroi woman he loved, a spirit user who chose to become Strigoi years ago rather than go mad. He is the first person Rose meets who is looking for a Strigoi for the same reason she is.

The Moroi prince serving a life sentence for kidnapping Lissa and forcing her to heal him. He is dying, he is entirely without remorse, and he knows more about spirit than anyone the group can reach legally.

Victor Dashkov's half-brother, a spirit user who has spent decades hiding from Moroi society. Spirit has damaged him badly and his conversation wanders, but he is the only person known to have done the thing the group needs done.
