Dash (Protagonist)
Also known as Newton Sawyer

A courier and pilot known formally as Newton, Dash carries heavy debts and the responsibility of an alien-linked mission. He travels aboard Slipwing with Leira, Viktor, and Conover, serving as the reluctant leader of a group drawn into an ancient conflict.
Leira (Supporting)

Pinetti's nephew and a gifted scientific observer with implanted eye lenses. Pinetti placed him aboard Slipwing through an open-ended bargain requiring Dash to provide passage, food, and care, leaving that obligation unresolved.
Amy (Supporting)

An unseen AI associated with the archetype but possessing an identity distinct from the machine. Sentinel recognizes Dash as the awaited Messenger and assists him in operating the alien construct and understanding the mission attached to it.
Custodian (Supporting)

The AI overseer of the forge, separate from Sentinel. Custodian recognizes Dash as the Messenger and identifies the immense installation as a facility built to construct and repair archetypes for the unseen war effort.
Pinetti (Minor)
Appears from the start
The proprietor of Penumbra's Eternal Grind, Dash's creditor, and Conover's uncle. Pinetti exchanged part of Dash's debt for an open-ended commitment to carry, feed, and look after Conover aboard Slipwing.
Ragsdale (Supporting)

A gardener on Gulch who cultivates unusually vigorous and nutritious native plants collected near the desert boundary. Their proximity to the unexplained northern signal makes her work relevant to Dash's investigation.

One of Ragsdale's local security specialists assigned to the expedition toward the signal. During an attack by burrowing predators in a ravine, Alec supports the stranded party with covering fire from an autogun.
Dreadfoot (Antagonist)

A named Golden defensive threat summoned after intruders activate systems inside the buried wreck. Its approaching metallic shriek forces the expedition to choose between advancing and fighting its way back while ammunition becomes increasingly limited.
Harvesters (Antagonist)
Also known as Dreadfoot
First appears in chapter 22
The capture machines previously known as Dreadfoot. These armored Golden constructs are designed to seize living beings for conversion, resist ordinary ammunition, and continue operating independently even when other ship systems are shut down.
