Star Wars Heir to the Empire: The Thrawn Trilogy, Book 1 recap

Five years after Endor, Grand Admiral Thrawn reunites Imperial forces and recruits the unstable Force-user Joruus C'baoth, offering him Luke, Leia, and Leia's unborn twins. Thrawn obtains creatures called ysalamiri that suppress the Force, raids Lando's Nkllon operation, and uses Noghri commandos against Leia. Smuggler chief Talon Karrde rescues Luke's disabled X-wing but holds him, while Karrde's lieutenant Mara Jade reveals a consuming wish to kill Luke. Forced to flee together across Myrkr, Luke and Mara survive Imperial pursuit; she eventually explains that she was the Emperor's secret agent and still hears his final command to kill Luke. Leia travels to devastated Honoghr and discovers that the Empire has kept the Noghri world poisoned to preserve their service. She begins a covert alliance with Khabarakh. Thrawn's attempt to steal warships at Sluis Van is thwarted when Lando disables the infiltrating machines, but the Grand Admiral escapes, C'baoth remains dangerous, and the New Republic still has a leak at its highest levels.

Five years have passed since the Battle of Endor and the deaths of Emperor Palpatine and Darth Vader. The former Rebel Alliance has established the New Republic on Coruscant, but it is still fighting scattered Imperial forces and building a new government. Leia Organa is now married to Han Solo and pregnant with twins while serving the Republic as a diplomat and leader. Han works on the Republic's behalf, and Luke Skywalker, Leia's brother, is a Jedi seeking a path forward without the masters who trained him.

Grand Admiral Thrawn has returned to command the Imperial remnant from the Star Destroyer Chimaera. After demonstrating how he can use an opponent's art to predict military behavior, he begins a campaign built around three assets: cloaking technology, the Emperor's storehouse on Wayland, and ysalamiri, creatures from Myrkr that suppress the Force. At Wayland he recruits Joruus C'baoth, an unstable man claiming to be a Jedi Master. C'baoth agrees to coordinate Imperial forces through the Force in exchange for the chance to make Luke, Leia, and Leia's unborn twins his pupils. On Coruscant, Luke struggles with being the only active Jedi, while Leia and Han balance New Republic work with threats against their growing family. The Imperial plan is already directed at all three of them.

Thrawn tests C'baoth's battle coordination and begins acquiring the tools needed for a larger offensive. Leia faces political friction within the New Republic, especially from Bothan councilor Borsk Fey'lya, while Han pursues signs that the Empire is planning something beyond ordinary raids. At Nkllon, Lando Calrissian's mining operation is struck by Imperial forces, which steal specialized mole miners used to penetrate larger vessels. Elsewhere, information broker and smuggler Talon Karrde learns that Luke's X-wing has been stranded near Myrkr. Karrde's lieutenant Mara Jade reacts to Luke's name with intense hatred. Karrde recovers Luke before the Empire can find him and holds him at the smuggler base, intending to decide how best to protect his neutrality and profit from the situation.

Luke is confined at Karrde's Myrkr base, where the surrounding ysalamiri cut him off from the Force. Mara makes no secret of wanting him dead, though she obeys Karrde's order to keep him alive. Thrawn traces Luke to Myrkr and brings Imperial forces to the planet, making Karrde's attempt at neutrality impossible. Luke and Mara flee into the forest together, each needing the other's skills to survive without the Force while Imperial troops search for them. Han and Lando investigate Thrawn's supply chain and seek contacts outside official channels. Leia, now targeted by Noghri assassins, begins to suspect that the commandos' loyalty to the Empire rests on a history she has not been told. The separate pursuits increasingly point toward Thrawn's ability to turn hidden dependencies into weapons.

Luke and Mara cross Myrkr's dangerous wilderness and reach Karrde's ship, working together despite Mara's hostility. They escape the Imperial net, but Karrde's organization must abandon its base and accept that Thrawn now regards it as an enemy. During the ordeal Luke realizes Mara has Force sensitivity, while her anger toward him appears tied to the Emperor rather than to anything Luke knowingly did. Leia survives another Noghri attack and encounters Khabarakh, who recognizes her connection to Darth Vader and calls her the Lady Vader. Instead of treating her only as a target, he listens when she questions why the Noghri still serve an Empire that claims to be repairing their ruined homeworld. Leia gains the possibility of visiting Honoghr and learning the truth behind that bargain.

Leia secretly travels to Honoghr, where generations of Noghri have served the Empire in return for promised ecological restoration after a wartime disaster. With help from Khabarakh, she examines the project and finds that Imperial agents have been maintaining the planet's dependence rather than healing it. The discovery gives her evidence that the Noghri's debt was manufactured, though persuading the clans to turn against their masters will take time and care. Luke and Mara's forced cooperation has made the simple hatred she once felt harder to sustain, but she still resists explaining why his survival matters so personally to her. Karrde's organization, now uprooted from Myrkr, begins exchanging information with the heroes as Thrawn prepares a larger strike against New Republic shipping.

Thrawn brings the strands of his campaign together in an assault on the Sluis Van shipyards. The mole miners stolen from Nkllon penetrate New Republic vessels so Imperial teams can attempt to carry them away from inside, while C'baoth's Force coordination gives the attack unusual precision. Han, Lando, Luke, and their allies converge on the threatened fleet, and Lando uses his knowledge of the mining machines to interfere with the operation. Leia returns from Honoghr with Khabarakh's secret cooperation but without an open Noghri revolt; the clans need proof and a safe way to act. Luke finally learns the source of Mara's vendetta: she served as the Emperor's Hand, and his dying psychic command ordered her to kill Luke Skywalker. Her old position is gone, but the command remains. The battle will decide whether Thrawn can turn a raid into the instant acquisition of a major fleet.

At Sluis Van, Lando remotely commands the mole miners to sabotage the very ships Thrawn means to steal. The action leaves many New Republic vessels badly damaged but prevents the Empire from taking them, and Thrawn withdraws rather than waste his forces. The Republic therefore stops the immediate theft without ending the wider offensive. C'baoth remains allied with Thrawn while growing less controllable and more determined to claim Luke, Leia, and the twins. Leia has uncovered the Empire's deliberate poisoning of Honoghr's recovery, and Khabarakh commits himself to helping her expose it to the Noghri clans. Luke has escaped Myrkr and now understands that Mara was the Emperor's Hand and that her desire to kill him comes from the Emperor's final command. Mara has not resolved that command, but circumstances have repeatedly forced her to cooperate with Luke. Karrde's organization survives, stripped of neutrality and increasingly aligned with the Republic, while Thrawn and the unidentified Imperial source inside the government remain at large.

Thrawn attacks the shipyards at Sluis Van, using stolen mole miners to seize New Republic warships from within. Lando remotely overrides the machines and makes the threatened ships unusable, denying Thrawn the fleet he intended to capture, although the raid still inflicts serious losses. The Grand Admiral withdraws with his larger campaign intact and continues relying on C'baoth despite the dark Jedi's growing insistence on possessing Luke, Leia, and the twins. On Honoghr, Leia has learned that the Empire has prolonged the planet's devastation to keep the Noghri dependent, and Khabarakh secretly agrees to help her return. Luke escapes Myrkr with Mara after learning that she once served as the Emperor's Hand and has been driven by his dying command to kill him. Karrde survives Imperial retaliation and edges toward cooperation with the New Republic. The Republic wins the immediate battle, but Thrawn remains in command, the identity of his source inside the government is unknown, and the struggle for the Noghri and C'baoth is unresolved.
