A young man raised in the English village of Wall. Romantic, earnest, and inexperienced, he is infatuated with Victoria Forester and promises to retrieve a fallen star from the forbidden country beyond the village wall in return for whatever he desires. His unusual birth gives him a connection to that country which he does not yet understand.

The clever and beautiful daughter of a prosperous Wall family, admired by Tristran from afar. She treats his courtship lightly and, after they watch a star fall beyond the wall, challenges him to bring it back as the price of granting his extravagant promises.

Tristran's father, who crossed the wall as a young man during the once-in-nine-years market. His encounter there left him with a glass snowdrop and, months later, an infant son delivered from Faerie. When the grown Tristran prepares to cross the wall, Dunstan gives him the flower and tells him the truth of his arrival.

A fallen star who appears in Faerie as a young woman with a broken leg. She is sharp-tempered and deeply offended when Tristran finds her, binds her with a silver chain, and announces that he intends to take her to Victoria. A topaz jewel knocked her from the sky and now hangs at her waist.

The eldest of three ancient witch sisters called the Lilim. After learning that a star has fallen, she consumes the last of a preserved star's heart to restore her youth and sets out to cut the new star's heart from her body. She is a powerful magician able to alter appearances and build elaborate traps.

The dying ruler of Stormhold. With no wish to choose openly among his surviving sons, he casts the topaz that signifies his office into the sky and declares that the first son to recover it will inherit his mountain realm.

The eldest surviving prince of Stormhold, more direct and honorable than his brothers but still intent on winning the succession. He searches for the fallen topaz while trying to stay ahead of Septimus's attempts to eliminate every rival.

The youngest of the surviving princes of Stormhold. Patient, ruthless, and practiced in poison and murder, he pursues both the topaz and his brothers, knowing the crown will be his if no other male heir remains to claim it.

A small, hairy traveler whom Tristran meets soon after entering Faerie. He offers food, practical advice, and several magical aids, including a candle that can carry its holder across great distances while it burns.

An enchanted tree that speaks to Tristran after he helps a trapped bird. Acting on behalf of the bird and the forest, the tree warns him that Yvaine faces grave danger and directs him toward the road she has taken.

The master of a flying vessel that gathers lightning from the clouds. He takes Tristran and Yvaine aboard, gives them food and shelter, and protects their privacy while his crew teaches Tristran some of the skills and manners of Faerie.

Tristran's mother and the daughter of the late Lord of Stormhold. Long held as a witch's slave, she is released when the conditions of her bondage are fulfilled. She identifies Tristran as her son and, with the princes dead, as Stormhold's surviving male heir.
