Drizzt Do'Urden (Protagonist)
Appears from the start
A dark elf ranger living in Mithral Hall with the friends who became his family. Wulfgar's apparent death has left him convinced that the enemies attached to his past will always endanger those friends, and he is considering a solitary answer to the continuing threat from Menzoberranzan.
Catti-brie (Supporting)
Appears from the start
Bruenor's adopted daughter and an expert archer, mourning the man she had expected to marry. She recognizes that Drizzt is preparing to face danger alone and refuses to let grief or his desire to protect her decide what risks she may take.
Bruenor Battlehammer (Supporting)
Appears from the start
King of Mithral Hall and adoptive father of Catti-brie, whose triumph in reclaiming his ancestral home has been darkened by Wulfgar's apparent death. He wants Drizzt protected but knows how little force can accomplish once the ranger chooses a path.
Regis (Supporting)
Appears from the start
A halfling member of the companions who has remained in Mithral Hall after surviving his latest abduction. He notices more than his preference for comfort suggests and understands how badly the company has been shaken by its recent loss.
Guenhwyvar (Supporting)
Appears from the start
Drizzt's black panther companion, summoned from another plane through an onyx figurine. Guenhwyvar's strength, senses and loyalty make the cat an essential ally in the Underdark, where darkness and narrow passages favor ambush.
Matron Baenre (Antagonist)
First appears in chapter 6
The ancient matron of Menzoberranzan's leading house and the central political power in the city. The failure of Vierna's expedition has not ended her interest in Drizzt or in Mithral Hall, and she is assembling the authority needed for a much larger campaign.
Jarlaxle (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 6
The independent-minded leader of Bregan D'aerthe, a drow mercenary company. He serves House Baenre when the arrangement benefits him, but information, leverage and the survival of his band matter more to him than the priestesses' religious goals.
Artemis Entreri (Antagonist)
First appears in chapter 8
A human assassin stranded in Menzoberranzan after his earlier pursuit of Drizzt. Surrounded by drow who regard him as a useful curiosity, he is determined to recover his freedom and still wants a decisive contest with the ranger.
Belwar Dissengulp (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 10
A deep gnome burrow warden whose hands were replaced with enchanted tools after a drow patrol maimed him. He befriended Drizzt during the ranger's years in the Underdark and remains willing to judge him by past loyalty rather than by the danger following him.
K'yorl Odran (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 6
The matron of House Oblodra, a powerful rival to House Baenre. Her family's unusual command of psionics gives her an advantage that ordinary drow magic cannot easily answer, and she delights in testing how far Baenre's authority can be bent.
Dantrag Baenre (Antagonist)
First appears in chapter 8
House Baenre's weapon master and one of Menzoberranzan's most accomplished swordsmen. Proud of his rank and magical equipment, he sees the arrival of famous surface fighters as a challenge to the status he has earned in the city.
Triel Baenre (Antagonist)
First appears in chapter 6
Matron Baenre's eldest daughter and a senior priestess of the Spider Queen. She carries out her mother's plans while watching the balance of power inside a family where position depends on usefulness and weakness is rarely forgiven.
Gromph Baenre (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 6
The archmage of Menzoberranzan and a son of Matron Baenre. His office gives him authority apart from the priestesses, and his command of arcane magic makes him central to both the city's defenses and his mother's wider plans.
Berg'inyon Baenre (Antagonist)
First appears in chapter 8
A younger son of Matron Baenre and a skilled fighter serving his house. He operates inside the rivalry among Baenre soldiers, Bregan D'aerthe and the city's other factions while the plan against Mithral Hall gathers force.
