Juan Rico enlists in Federal Service with his friends Carl and Carmen, despite his father's opposition, and is assigned to the Mobile Infantry. Sergeant Zim's severe basic training teaches him that military skill is inseparable from discipline and personal responsibility. When war with the Arachnids destroys Buenos Aires, Rico loses his mother, sees his father enlist, and moves from peacetime recruit to combat soldier. Service in Rasczak's Roughnecks gives him a military family, but the death of Lieutenant Rasczak pushes him toward command. At Officer Candidates School, demanding study and a probationary combat assignment force him to understand the moral weight of giving orders. Rico earns a commission, reunites with his father as a fellow Mobile Infantryman, and ends the book leading the Roughnecks into another drop as humanity's war continues.

Mobile Infantry private Juan Rico takes part in a raid against the Skinnies, allies of humanity's Arachnid enemy. Launched from a troopship in an individual capsule, he lands in powered armor and destroys designated infrastructure while his platoon spreads across the target area. The suit lets each trooper move quickly, communicate with the unit, and carry weapons powerful enough to devastate a city, but the operation still depends on careful timing and mutual support. Rico delays on the way back to the retrieval point to recover the wounded Dizzy Flores. The Roughnecks extract successfully, though Dizzy dies after reaching the ship. Rico's memory of the mission leads into an account of how he entered the service.

Before enlisting, Rico is an aimless school graduate influenced by three people with much clearer plans: Carl wants scientific research, Carmen Ibanez hopes to become a spacecraft pilot, and their teacher Mr. Dubois has challenged the class to think seriously about civic responsibility. Rico follows his friends to the recruiting office despite fierce opposition from his father, who expects him to join the family business. Tests find no special aptitude that would spare him ordinary service, and he accepts assignment to the Mobile Infantry. At Camp Currie, Sergeant Zim strips away the recruits' civilian assumptions through exhausting drill, harsh discipline, and training in unarmed combat. Rico discovers that volunteering was much easier than becoming someone a unit can trust.

Basic training steadily reduces the class as recruits resign, fail, or are punished. Rico is shocked by a military justice system that acts quickly and makes penalties public, but he also learns that instructors and commanders are answerable for how authority is used. Field exercises demand judgment as well as endurance. When Rico mishandles responsibility during a simulated mission, he accepts corporal punishment and returns to training instead of quitting. A letter from Mr. Dubois reveals that the teacher understands military service from experience and encourages him to persist. By graduation, Rico has stopped treating the Mobile Infantry as a temporary ordeal and has begun to value the discipline and fellowship it requires.

War with the Arachnids transforms Rico's service. Buenos Aires is destroyed, killing his mother and leaving him to believe that his estranged father has also died. Rico serves in combat units before joining Rasczak's Roughnecks, whose small-unit loyalty gives him a new sense of home. Lieutenant Rasczak is killed in action, and Sergeant Jelal preserves the platoon's identity while taking command. Rico, encouraged by his superiors and no longer content simply to follow, applies for Officer Candidates School. He has moved far beyond the impulse that brought him to the recruiting office: the choice now before him is whether he can accept responsibility for leading others.

Officer Candidates School tests Rico through mathematics, military subjects, drill, and renewed study of History and Moral Philosophy. Major Reid's classes connect the authority to use force with accountability for its consequences. Rico also discovers that his father survived the destruction of Buenos Aires and, after losing Rico's mother, enlisted in the Mobile Infantry himself. Their changed circumstances begin to repair their relationship: his father now understands the commitment he once dismissed, while Rico sees how grief and service have altered them both. The training makes clear that a commission is not a reward for ambition but a demand to make decisions that may kill the soldiers who obey them.

Rico completes a probationary assignment as a junior officer in an active combat unit, where mistakes can no longer be corrected in a classroom. The experience teaches him to rely on seasoned noncommissioned officers without surrendering the responsibility that belongs to the commander. After returning to Officer Candidates School, he earns his commission. Humanity continues its campaign against the Arachnids, combining intelligence, naval power, and Mobile Infantry assaults in an effort to end the war. Rico reunites with his father, now a Mobile Infantry sergeant, then assumes command of the platoon descended from Rasczak's Roughnecks. As another operation begins, he prepares to drop with his soldiers, fully committed to the profession and obligations he once entered almost by accident.

After completing the classroom portion of Officer Candidates School, Rico serves as a probationary officer in combat and learns that command means accepting responsibility for other soldiers' lives. He returns to finish the course and receives his commission. The war continues, now focused on bringing the Arachnids to a decisive defeat rather than merely surviving their attacks. Rico reunites with his father, whose own loss and military service have carried him into the Mobile Infantry and the rank of sergeant. Rico then takes command of the platoon once known as Rasczak's Roughnecks. The novel closes as his unit prepares for another combat drop. He is no longer the unformed young man who enlisted because his friends did: he has chosen the Mobile Infantry as his profession and accepted both its fellowship and its obligations.
