Aboard the transport ship Corvus, McGill survives brutal live training exercises that include real deaths followed by revival, earning a difficult reputation after killing a training officer who ambushes his squad in a live-fire drill. Deployed to defend a mining complex on the planet Cancri 9 against a rebellion by its Saurian workforce, McGill's unit suffers heavy losses in the jungle, and McGill himself is killed and revived as the fighting escalates into something larger than a simple labor dispute.
