In short (whole book)
When Nin's long-missing grandfather Ty arrives gravely ill, Val and her allies cure him and learn that Silverclaw dragons are secretly holding infected Stormforge dragons in the Crying Caverns. Zoltan develops a cure, Zav tests it on himself, and the group mounts a covert rescue. Zav fakes his capture while Val, Ty, Dr. Walker, and Sindari infiltrate the prison. The apparent betrayal by Zav's sister proves to be part of his plan. Val kills the silver-dragon leader, the conspirators are defeated, and Stormforge reinforcements secure the caverns. Every captive is freed and treated, including Zav's uncle. Zav survives serious wounds, his mother accepts Val as his mate, and the Stormforges regain political control. Zav returns to repair Val's home and begin openly dating her. The coffee shop becomes The Sable Dragon, while a new local killing sets up the next case.
Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)
Previously: Val Thorvald is a half-elf investigator who handles dangers involving the magical community while raising her daughter, Amber. Zav, a Stormforge dragon, has claimed Val as his mate, though their bond remains complicated by dragon customs and her determination to choose her own path. Sindari, a summoned magical tiger, fights beside her. Willard directs Val's work, while Dimitri, Nin, and the vampire alchemist Zoltan share her growing household and business network. Val and her partners are establishing a coffee shop for magical clientele. Her elven heritage has also brought new family connections and unresolved questions. Threats carried forward include anti-dragon rebels, a leak connected to the elven court, and an escaped scientist.
Story so far - through chapter 7 (this book)
So far this book: A wounded older gnome collapses in Val's yard and is identified as Ty, Nin's grandfather, who vanished twenty years ago. Orcs attack while trying to recover him, but Val, Willard, and Sindari drive them off. Ty is suffering from an unusual bacterial infection, and Zoltan begins creating a treatment that requires a rare plant from a former elven sanctuary. Meanwhile, Zav reports that his missing uncle has weakened his mother's political position. His mother wants him to abandon his bond with Val and accept a politically useful dragon mate. The proposed mate follows him to Earth, restrains Val, and challenges Zav. He defeats her, refuses the alliance, and affirms that Val is his chosen mate, but the rival remains nearby. Val continues the urgent search for Ty's medicine with help from Zav and her elven half-sister.
Story so far - through chapter 13 (this book)
So far this book: Val's group obtains the plant Zoltan needs and sends it back for Ty's treatment. At the abandoned elven homes, Val and her half-sister find letters and a journal showing that Val's parents shared a sustained and loving relationship, though the reason her father left is still unknown. The rival female dragon finds them, tries to compel Val to reject Zav, and sets the dwelling and nearby trees on fire when Val resists. Val's half-sister protects them and helps extinguish the blaze. Back home, Zav reports that Ty has stabilized. Val and Zav commit to treating each other as mates despite his family's demands and the rival's threats. Their private moment is interrupted when Nin announces that Ty has awakened, leaving him ready to explain his disappearance and why his pursuers want him back.
Story so far - through chapter 18 (this book)
So far this book: Ty reveals that Silverclaw allies operate a hidden prison in the Crying Caverns on the gnomish world. More than twenty weakened Stormforge dragons are held there in life cells and kept unconscious by an engineered infection. Ty was abducted to maintain the prison, escaped after Zav's uncle was brought in, and came to Val because a dwarf believed she and Chopper could help. A Silverclaw dragon follows Ty to Earth and attacks Val with orc reinforcements, but Val, Sindari, and Zav repel them. Zav confirms that Ty believes his account. An open Stormforge response could prompt the captors to kill the prisoners and start a war, so the group considers a covert rescue. Because Zoltan's cure has only worked on Ty, Zav agrees to be deliberately infected and treated to prove that it can save dragons.
Story so far - through chapter 23 (this book)
So far this book: Val prepares for a mission she may not survive, strengthens Amber's training, and helps a hungry troll child by arranging food and paid work at the shop. Willard recruits Dr. Walker as armed medical support. Zoltan proves that his cure works on Zav and discovers the same infection in barbecue delivered to the house. Zav decides to infect himself again and pretend to be incapacitated so the enemy will carry him into the prison. Val finally tells him about her asthma, and he accepts her vulnerability without questioning her ability to fight. After acknowledging their love, they begin the operation. Val, Ty, and Dr. Walker portal to the gnomish world and see Zav taken into the Crying Caverns with several dragons, including his sister. Her apparent cooperation suggests betrayal, but Val's team continues into the trapped complex because Zav and the prisoners still need help.
Story so far - through chapter 27 (this book)
So far this book: Val, Ty, Dr. Walker, and Sindari fight through the cavern entrance. Val then separates from the others to draw the searching dragons away while Ty and the doctor seek the life cells with Zoltan's cure. Captured and brought to Zav, Val overhears a plan to kill the queen and seize the Dragon Justice Court and ruling council. Her charms and mental training keep the conspirators from reading her thoughts. Zav's sister appears to stop Val from helping him, but the betrayal is a ruse arranged with Zav. He is only feigning unconsciousness. When a trap disrupts the chamber, Zav and his sister attack the hostile dragons. Val kills the silver-dragon leader with Chopper, and the other immediate conspirators are defeated. The group reaches the prison chamber, where dozens of infected dragons remain sealed in life cells. Zav stays behind to delay approaching enemies while his sister goes to summon their family.
Story so far - through chapter 31 (this book)
By the end: Ty and Dr. Walker open the life cells and inject the freed dragons with Zoltan's cure. Zav's uncle awakens, but an opposing dragon attacks before he can recover. The Stormforge queen arrives with reinforcements, kills the intruder, and sends help to Zav. Val later finds Zav seriously wounded. His mother accepts Val as his mate and takes him home for healing. A week later, every captive has been freed and treated, though some recoveries may take months. The Stormforges regain majority control of the dragon ruling council and Dragon Justice Court. Zav returns fully healed, removes the mold from Val's house, and magically restores its damaged second floor. He and Val plan a formal date and continue their relationship by mutual choice. Val gives her mother the recovered journal and money from the mission. The coffee shop thrives under the name The Sable Dragon, with Inga joining its security effort and caring for the orphaned troll boy. Willard also reports a new killing near Tulalip Resort Casino.
How does it end? (ending)
Ty and Dr. Walker open every life cell and administer Zoltan's cure to the imprisoned Stormforge dragons, including Zav's uncle. Val kills the silver-dragon leader, while Zav and his sister defeat the other immediate conspirators. The Stormforge queen arrives with reinforcements, accepts Val as Zav's mate, and takes her badly wounded son home to recover. One week later, all the prisoners are free and treated, although some face a long recovery. Zav returns healed, and his clan again controls a majority of the ruling council and Dragon Justice Court. He repairs Val's mold-damaged house, and the two begin dating openly. Val, Dimitri, Nin, and Zoltan name their thriving coffee shop The Sable Dragon. Inga joins its support network and cares for the orphaned troll boy. Questions about Val's elven family, possible dragon retaliation, and older enemies remain open, while a new killing near Tulalip Resort Casino points to Val's next investigation.
