Stuart Little characters

The second son of a New York family, born only about two inches tall and shaped much like a mouse. Stuart is resourceful, formally dressed, and eager for challenges that become enormous at his scale. He helps around the house, drives small vehicles, and faces cats, drains, and city traffic with more confidence than his parents expect.

Stuart's mother, who treats her unusual younger son with tenderness and tries to make ordinary family life safe for him. She worries about the hazards created by his size and discourages language that might make him feel set apart.

Stuart's father, a practical and protective New Yorker who adapts household objects for his tiny son. He accepts Stuart as a member of the family while sometimes responding anxiously to the risks Stuart takes.

Stuart's older human brother. George is fascinated by models and mechanical toys, and his projects sometimes provide Stuart with equipment suited to his size. His enthusiasm is not always matched by careful planning.

The Littles' pet cat, who resents having a mouse-like member of the household whom he is forbidden to hunt. Snowbell can speak with Stuart and acts civil under the family's eye, but his predatory instincts make him a continuing danger to the tiny boy.

A small brown bird found exhausted on the Littles' windowsill. The family nurses her back to health, and she becomes especially close to Stuart, sharing conversation and companionship with him while she stays in the house.

A large Angora cat acquainted with Snowbell. His presence near the Little home makes Snowbell's hostility toward Margalo more than an idle threat.

A friendly dentist whom Stuart meets after leaving home. Dr. Carey shows Stuart a tiny automobile that suits him and helps make his journey possible.

A young woman in Ames' Crossing who is close to Stuart's own height. Stuart is delighted to meet her and imagines an ideal outing on the river, though the practical details of the date prove harder than his plan allows.
