Isabel O'Sullivan (Protagonist)

The twins' cousin and a first-form pupil. Alison has attached herself closely to Sadie Greene and readily follows the new girl's interest in hairstyles and appearance.

Margery (Supporting)

Appears from the start

A former classmate of the twins who has advanced to the second form. Lucy works among scholarship pupils because an accident involving her father had placed her continued education in doubt.

Bobby (Supporting)

Appears from the start

A capable first-form pupil who uses a nickname and is already Janet's close friend. Bobby is bold, athletic, and inventive, but she prefers elaborate practical jokes to the steady effort her schoolwork requires.

Janet (Supporting)

A first-form dormitory mate and Bobby's firm friend. Janet enjoys mischief but is trying to apply herself because she hopes to win promotion, making her the more studious partner in their energetic friendship.

Appears from the start

A new half-Spanish member of the first form. Carlotta has a fierce temper and struggles with ordinary lessons.

Prudence Arnold (Antagonist)

Also known as Prudence

A new first-form pupil who presents herself as unusually dutiful and well connected. Prudence seeks friendships that may benefit her, drawing close to clever Pamela for help and wealthy Sadie for social advantage while quietly checking Pamela's work.

Pamela Boardman (Supporting)

Also known as Pamela

Appears from the start

The youngest pupil in the form and already its strongest scholar. Pamela is diligent, serious, and fond of gardening, though she has little aptitude for games. Her trusting nature leaves her receptive to Prudence's admiring attention.

Sadie Greene (Supporting)

Also known as Sadie

Appears from the start

A wealthy American newcomer who quickly becomes Alison's closest companion. Sadie is generous and good-tempered, but deeply concerned with clothes and appearance. Her expected fortune also attracts Prudence's calculated interest.

Hilary (Supporting)

The head of the first form and one of the girls sharing the twins' dormitory. Hilary provides a steady senior presence among classmates whose different tempers and loyalties have not yet settled into a united group.

Miss Theobald (Supporting)

The headmistress of St Clare's. Miss Theobald oversees the first form's progress and expects pupils to answer honestly for their conduct.

Miss Roberts (Supporting)

The first-form mistress, whose demanding standards set the academic pace of the term. Miss Roberts believes Pat and Isabel can reach the second form if they compete for leading places, and she closely monitors pupils who fall behind.

Mam'zelle (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 6

The French teacher. Mam'zelle confirms that she neither summoned Janet for extra coaching nor taught her during the cinema outing, helping Miss Roberts uncover Bobby and Janet's deception.

Miss Wilton (Supporting)

Appears from the start

The games mistress who assesses the twins as possible members of the first-form tennis team.

Belinda Towers (Minor)

Also known as Belinda

First appears in chapter 12

A senior pupil responsible for sports organization. Belinda sees enough tennis ability in Bobby to offer her a chance at the first-form reserve place, but makes clear that the opportunity depends on regular training and demonstrated effort.

Miss Lewis (Minor)

First appears in chapter 6

A teacher who encourages pupils from the first and second forms to attend a historical film. Miss Lewis turns the outing into an academic opportunity by offering a prize for the strongest written review.
