A pilot of Skyward Flight and the daughter of a comfortable Detritus family, better read than most of the people around her and unwilling to accept an order simply because of who gave it. She is uneasy about how much the National Assembly decides for the people it governs and how little of the truth it shares, and about a society that still sorts its citizens by birth. Calm under fire and stubborn out of it, she would rather ask the question everyone else is avoiding than keep formation.

Chief engineer on the reclaimed orbital platforms above Detritus, a former flight cadet who left training and found what he was actually good at. Careful, anxious and extremely capable, he is trying to work out how creatures that teleport can be made to serve as starship hyperdrives without anyone getting hurt, including the creatures.

Flightleader of Skyward Flight and a cytonic, carrying far more responsibility than a pilot of his rank should. With Spensa gone he is the closest thing the DDF has to a working cytonic, which makes him essential to the hyperdrive program and to the defense of the planet at the same time.

A cytonic pilot of the UrDail, from the world of ReDawn, who came to Detritus looking for allies and was shot down for her trouble. Recovered from the crash, she is a guest of the humans in name and something closer to a stranded diplomat in fact, and she is running out of patience while her own people decide their future without her.
