Every entry below is hidden until you open it, and each names the chapter the character first appears in.
Haymitch Abernathy (Protagonist)
Appears from the start
A sixteen-year-old boy from the Seam, the poorest quarter of District 12, sharp-tongued, clever, and quick to spot an angle. He is devoted to his hardworking mother, his younger brother, and his sweetheart, Lenore Dove. When he is reaped into the fiftieth Hunger Games, he is determined to outwit the Capitol and get home to the people he loves, even as the odds against him are doubled.
Lenore Dove (Supporting)
Appears from the start
Haymitch's beloved, a spirited young woman from the Covey, District 12's family of traveling musicians. Free-spirited and outspoken, she sings, speaks her mind, and makes little secret of her contempt for the Capitol's cruelty. Her bond with Haymitch is the heart he carries into the arena.
President Snow (Antagonist)
Also known as Coriolanus Snow
Appears from the start
The president of Panem, an aging, coldly ruthless ruler who has held power for decades and treats the Hunger Games as an instrument of control. He takes a personal interest in the fiftieth Games and in keeping the districts, District 12 among them, firmly in their place, showing no mercy to anyone who defies or embarrasses the Capitol.
Maysilee Donner (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 2
A girl from the town part of District 12, one of the tributes reaped for the fiftieth Games alongside Haymitch. The daughter of the local sweet-shop owners, she is prim and proper on the surface but proves sharp, stubborn, and tougher than she looks once the danger begins.
Louella McCoy (Minor)
First appears in chapter 2
One of the youngest tributes reaped from District 12 for the Quell, a girl Haymitch knows from home. Small and frightened by the ordeal ahead, she stirs his protective instincts from the moment their names are drawn.
Plutarch Heavensbee (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 3
A young, ambitious Capitol man working in the production and broadcast of the Games. Watchful and calculating, he moves comfortably in the machinery of the spectacle while seeming to notice more than he lets on.
Mags (Minor)
First appears in chapter 3
A past victor from District 4 who now serves as a mentor, kind and shrewd behind her weathered manner. She offers guidance to tributes trying to survive the arena.
Beetee (Minor)
First appears in chapter 3
A brilliant inventor and past victor from District 3 who acts as a mentor, gifted with electronics and clever schemes. Quiet and analytical, he lends his ingenuity to the desperate business of keeping tributes alive.
