Sunshine characters
Every entry below is hidden until you open it, and each names the chapter the character first appears in.
Rae Seddon (Protagonist)
Also known as Sunshine
Appears from the start
A baker at Charlie's Coffeehouse whose cinnamon rolls and other elaborate creations shape the rhythm of her life. Born Rae Seddon, she prefers the ordinary demands of the bakery to thoughts of the magical heritage on her father's side. A solitary drive to an abandoned lakeside house ends when vampires abduct her, forcing her to use powers she has long avoided.
Constantine (Supporting)
Also known as Con
Appears from the start
A vampire held captive by Bo's followers in the same ruined house as Sunshine. He refuses to treat her as prey and cooperates in their escape, despite the pain sunlight causes him. Controlled, formal, and difficult to read, he is an enemy of the vampire master who arranged their imprisonment.
Bo (Antagonist)
Appears from the start
A powerful vampire master whose followers kidnap Sunshine and Constantine. He wants Constantine destroyed and regards the human captive as a tool in that campaign. Although he initially acts through his subordinates, his reach makes him the continuing threat behind Sunshine's ordeal.
Mel (Supporting)
Appears from the start
Sunshine's steady boyfriend, a motorcycle mechanic marked by extensive tattoos. He accepts her demanding bakery schedule and her silences more patiently than most people would, but her disappearance and altered behavior leave him worried and unable to understand what she is concealing.
Charlie (Supporting)
Appears from the start
Sunshine's stepfather and the owner of Charlie's Coffeehouse. Gruff, practical, and committed to feeding people well, he gives Sunshine broad freedom in the bakery and provides the stable family and workplace at the center of her ordinary life.
Sunshine's mother (Supporting)
Appears from the start
Sunshine's mother, who built a new family life with Charlie after separating from Sunshine's dangerous and secretive father. Protective and strong-willed, she has discouraged questions about that side of the family and the magical abilities Sunshine may have inherited.
Yolande (Minor)
Appears from the start
Sunshine's paternal grandmother, remembered as a formidable teacher of household magic. She taught Sunshine to use sunlight as a focus and to work magic through ordinary objects and actions, lessons that become essential during the captivity at the lake.
Jesse (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 2
An investigator with Special Other Forces, the government organization responsible for supernatural threats after the Voodoo Wars. He questions Sunshine about her abduction and suspects she has concealed important facts, but his manner suggests that he may be more interested in understanding her abilities than simply punishing her evasions.
Onyx Blaise (Minor)
First appears in chapter 2
Sunshine's estranged father, a powerful magic worker from a family whose abilities she inherited. His absence and the danger associated with him explain much of her mother's determination to keep Sunshine separate from that heritage.
