A mountain devastates the city, though its defenders survive and the king is maimed by a Church artifact. After stopping a second mountain strike, Jiran is captured by the temple agent Three. They make a mutual non-harm agreement that leaves Jiran owing ten tasks. Jiran absorbs his Challenger density, falls unconscious, and vanishes with Three through a scarlet rift. The Remalon leadership has also begun searching for an apparent Tier 4 anomaly matching him.

Previously: Jiran became a champion connected to the sentient world Madra and evolved into a Tier 4 Remalon. His unusual mana control, elemental knowledge, healing, and access to an interface set him apart from the Empire's established powers. Niya, his cousin, and Mayalyn, his partner, remained his closest traveling companions, while Olive and Cameron were part of his wider circle of allies. Daughter existed within Jiran's soul as an uncertain link to Madra. Jiran also carried obligations to mentors including Lenton and Feylon Samris, whose inherited curses had not been cured. Jiran's identity was politically sensitive. Imperial and Church interests viewed his knowledge as strategically important. The Graymin remained the Empire's ancient enemy, and earlier dangers had left Jiran alert to both open war and hidden factions.

Jiran, Niya, and Mayalyn enter a Timberling community that regards Jiran as the Great Spirit of a troubling prophecy. He refuses to exploit that belief. With his Challenger timer still active, he is also seeking powerful opponents. When he discovers a girl mutilated and abandoned by her sect, he restores her limbs and gives her the new name Lulu. She becomes the party's guide. The Timberlings live under rigid population controls and fear winged hive hunters that carry their people away. The hunters prove to be a sapient winged people. A dissenter explains that the dominant Stormclaw clan farms the Timberlings and kills them to support safe advancement. Jiran captures nearly two hundred valley residents, leaving the Timberlings to judge them while he prepares for retaliation. He also begins teaching Niya healing and develops a primitive teleportation method. Daughter warns that divination has failed across much of the Empire. In the capital, Olive, Cameron, and Emperor Dominus learn that the Graymin have unexpectedly retreated from every front. Seeking greater strength, Jiran enters the Land of the Lost to hunt Tier 7 fog predators, only to find several waiting in a forest that distorts perception and repairs itself through its fog.

Jiran kills Tier 7 fog predators and returns with proof of his strength. He defeats a Timberling challenge but refuses to let either side execute prisoners without understanding the consequences. The twelve matrons ultimately choose death for the captured winged people. Their unified Harmony kills the prisoners and nearly kills every connected Timberling, but Jiran shields Lulu, revives the matrons, and saves the other victims. The seven ancient elders explain that Harmony travels through the Timberlings' shared song. Their first mother then speaks through them, saying that divine beings shattered her soul after tearing her from another world. The elders are preserved fragments of that soul, and the present Timberlings appear to carry the remaining pieces. She entrusts her descendants to Jiran and warns of a coming king. The elders collapse into seven living heartwoods, which Lulu must protect and eventually cultivate. Meanwhile, Jiran discovers Sanctuary, a crystal structure in space operating at only eight percent power. Its functioning stasis chamber holds an unidentified blonde child designated DH0001, but the group lacks the energy to revive her. Lulu forms a new sect devoted to Jiran and becomes its matron. Jiran accepts responsibility for protecting the Timberlings and orders their full mobilization.

Melathon faces a Graymin army of roughly twenty million and a mountain-sized king that once defeated the emperors. Olive refuses to abandon the northern city and prepares to command its defense. In the valley, Jiran asks the Timberlings to supply mana for Sanctuary and warns that new corrupted beasts threaten their scouts. Knife loses an arm while saving her group from an ambush, but Mayalyn rescues her, Niya stabilizes her, and Jiran restores the limb. Jiran builds graphene-reinforced armor and formations that let him hunt Tier 7 fog beasts efficiently, purify their mana, and store the surplus. The Challenger density he gains also produces violent impulses that he must consciously manage. He encounters leaders of the winged Rising Sky faction, distinguishes them from the murderous Divine faction, and teaches four elders how to hunt in the Land of the Lost. They begin forming an alliance against Stormclaw. By safely siphoning voluntary Timberling mana, Niya earns an introductory interface and joins Jiran's party. She gains limited control of Sanctuary functions and can independently open a portal to the Empire. The Eldest Unspeakable is a Challenger damaged by centuries of depleted willpower, which prevents him from joining the war. At Melathon's War Council, Lenton reveals that Mortimer the Fireling is Jiran. The Empire's highest war leaders now know his hidden identity and value his knowledge for the coming defense.

Jiran arrives before the line collapses and breaks the first assault, but all five emperors pull him into a private meeting. They fear both the Graymin king and a later purge, and want his portals to evacuate the population and establish a successor realm. Jiran refuses to abandon the battle. Instead, he opens routes for allied reinforcements, draws mana from seasonal clouds, and learns to alter donated high-tier mana so recipients can safely use it. More than ten thousand winged warriors halt the immediate advance while the city's formations come online. Jiran then transports the Timberlings and Mayalyn's people to the rear flanks. He shares elemental principles that greatly increase the rankers' destructive power, heals allied casualties, and coordinates with Olive to divide their coalition across both fronts. The defense is organized, but the main enemy force is still approaching.

Jiran's improved weapons, mana transfers, gravity attacks, and portal reinforcements turn the coalition into a sustainable defense. Church leaders plan to seize a portal and prepare a catastrophic artifact that could destroy the Empire. Their assassins, alongside the shadow faction's agents, have prevented reinforcements from reaching the city. Markhiss hunts those operatives while struggling with intrusive voices. He eventually submits his aura to Jiran, who removes one skill under Mayalyn's protection. The voices stop for the moment, and Markhiss swears not to betray Jiran, though the cure is not yet certain. He reveals the two factions' plan to let the Graymin cripple the Imperial army before escaping. Elsewhere, an Imperial prince reaches an emptied refugee cave and is confronted by a superior hostile force.
