When silent alien ships descend on a rural California farm, computer-science professor Kyle Riggs fights back as two of his children are taken and killed, then is abducted himself and forced through a brutal series of survival tests aboard the vessel. Riggs's success in the trials leaves him in command of the ship, which he names Alamo, and he immediately orders it to try reviving his children and a fellow captive named Sandra, even as the vessel's true nature - part artificial intelligence, part swarm of nanorobots - only slowly becomes clear to him. Drawn into an alliance of similarly stranded human commanders under a former naval officer, Riggs must help fight off a mysterious attacking fleet while still hoping his children's revival will succeed.
