In short (whole book)

After Alana ascends beyond his reach, Derek prepares to follow her but agrees to delay his own ascension when he learns that the Universal System is approaching Davin Resh. He reaches level 251, gains the title Ascending Monarch, and organizes four kingdoms against a three-month invasion. Jace, Derek's former best friend from Earth, enters independently, conquers Virindal, and later reconciles with Derek. The two use Jace's apparent hostility to lure the invading champions together. Trisha temporarily suppresses Derek's void and spatial powers, but Jace's timed rescue lets Derek turn Void's Embrace against the council ritual and kill Darvin. Derek's allies remove the remaining champions, and Amelia's surrender ends the invasion. The defending system records its requested favor complete, while Derek remains with Silvi and his surviving allies under a six-month deadline for forced ascension.

Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)

Previously: Derek became a powerful void human with deep ties to Savannah and the surrounding kingdoms. Silvi is both his bonded companion and an accomplished fighter and cook. His extended household includes adventurers, craftspeople, merchants, and younger allies whose safety he treats as his responsibility. Malorie manages the Void Emporium, Brandy develops unusual equipment, and Thomas is growing into a capable academy adventurer under Derek's protection. Avery and Edgar stand among his strongest nearby allies, while Natalie helps organize Savannah and Ossian rules allied Indaria. Marrick continues travelling far from Derek's home. Alana is another exceptionally powerful ally within Derek's circle. Derek's unusual growth and his connection to the void have also drawn attention beyond his adopted world. His immediate circle is secure enough to grow, but its safety depends heavily on alliances that cross households, cities, kingdoms, and former enemies.

Story so far - through chapter 7 (this book)

Alana vanishes in a flash, but Derek can still sense her faintly and concludes that greater strength may eventually let him reach her. In Savannah, the household property and its businesses are nearing completion, yet Bones and Ogre remain afraid of retaliation from the Assassin's Guild. Derek makes their freedom his immediate priority. Vanessa, a former Guild vice leader now serving Cydaria, guides him through concealed teleporters to its leadership. Derek threatens the organization if it harms his people and demonstrates that its hidden headquarters is not beyond his reach. The Guild agrees to release Bones and Ogre, protect Derek's circle through the Black Ledger, and free Vanessa from its oaths. Cydaria's king then releases most of her royal obligations and offers her leadership of the kingdom's intelligence work. Vanessa accepts Cydaria by choice. Derek nevertheless considers her uncle, the Cydarian branch leader who threatened his household, an unresolved danger and intends to help Vanessa confront him once the remaining releases are secure.

Story so far - through chapter 15 (this book)

Braxton, the dwarven leader of the Valum Assassin's Guild branch, refuses a request to kill Derek and instead protects Roman, whose dangerous wyvern brew can drain a drinker's health while masking the damage. Derek and Braxton survive controlled tests, but Roman is told not to sell it freely. Braxton also adopts Derek's proposal for training possible successors as a route toward retirement. Meanwhile, Silvi serves a meal that grants a lasting food-related achievement, strengthening several members of Derek's circle. Once Bones and Ogre receive formal release from the Guild, Vanessa accepts her new place as Cydaria's intelligence chief and prepares to settle her personal grievance. She and Derek enter the Cydarian branch despite an ambush. Vanessa forces her uncle to admit that he arranged her father's death, defeats him in a duel, and kills him after Derek stops the vice leader's attempted interference. Interim leaders take control under outside Guild supervision, leaving Vanessa's revenge complete and the immediate Guild threat to Derek's household largely resolved.

Story so far - through chapter 24 (this book)

Derek reaches level 245 and confirms that Alana's contract ended through ascension rather than death, but he still lacks one unknown requirement for his own advancement. Savannah settles into a period of growth: Brandy develops combat flight equipment, Thomas's academy team takes first place, and Jax and Raina safely welcome twins named Hunter and Stacy. Derek's attempt to train Time Prison reveals a severe limitation when creatures held inside it die and mutate during Void Travel. Freed to travel again, he rescues Marrick from a giant octopus at sea and carries him to the distant continent. Marrick has met one advancement condition but has been blocked for more than a century by declining physical attributes. Expecting that he may eventually leave many allies behind, Derek recruits Avery, Edgar, and Silvi for an extended Void Beast hunt. They build a large reserve of valuable meal materials, while Avery and Edgar gain achievement progress. The reserve can now support a broader effort to strengthen the people who may remain after Derek ascends.

Story so far - through chapter 32 (this book)

Derek reaches the Great System's apparent maximum at level 250 without ascending. A system-informed elf explains that Derek has already completed the affinity requirement but must exceed the local cap and reach level 251. He also reveals that the Universal System discovered Davin Resh because of Derek's arrival and that the two systems are moving toward a collision. Derek agrees to postpone ascension and help defend his adopted world. He begins an urgent but partly concealed rearmament program. Tyron begins preparing improved weapons for key allies, while Braxton takes Derek to Stonehelm to obtain armor. There Derek learns that Braxton is also a Valum duke and the king's elder half-brother. Valum agrees to produce legendary equipment under contracts preventing its use against the kingdom. Derek also challenges the royal objection to Braxton's long relationship with Gretchen. The king relents, and Braxton confirms that he plans to retire from Guild leadership and marry her after arranging a successor. The alliance now has major equipment work underway, although the nature and timing of the approaching conflict remain uncertain.

Story so far - through chapter 40 (this book)

Before crossing the final advancement threshold, Derek and Silvi travel through the void to Earth. Derek finds his old cabin ruined but locates Silvi Jacobs, the woman whose Portal accident stranded him long ago. She survived the aftermath, rebuilt her life, and now leads a capable dungeon team with Gerard. Their reunion triggers escalating Universal System alerts. Kelvin, humanity's council leader, identifies Derek as an outside-system creature and attacks under orders from Darwin. Derek defeats him but spares him after Kelvin swears that Silvi Jacobs and her companions will not be punished for knowing Derek. She declines Derek's invitation to leave Earth because she will not abandon her team. Back in Davin Resh, Derek grinds enough experience to reach level 251. The Origin System confirms that both advancement requirements are complete and gives him six months before ascension becomes compulsory. He delays departure as promised. The local system can no longer support his growth, and it recommends ending his bond with Silvi so she can develop her own void-cooking affinity. Derek and Silvi choose to remain bonded.

Story so far - through chapter 48 (this book)

Derek warns allied leaders that an unusually powerful force may be coming. Cydaria, Indaria, Valum, Savannah, and the Assassin's Guild coordinate preparations, while Natalie offers her estate as a refuge for children and civilians. Legendary weapons are completed for Vanessa and Edgar, and the dwarven master smith Seamus attunes Derek's armor with void energy. The finished mythical set, Void's Embrace, can absorb magical or kinetic attacks, refill Derek's mana, or release stored force in a concentrated burst. Derek also reaches the local limit for permanent stat increases and trains additional resistances. The Universal System council meanwhile holds its strongest fighters ready for an imminent invasion, including Amelia and the level-250 Jace Whitaker. Blue beams finally appear across the continent. Derek gathers his household at Natalie's estate and chooses the defending side when the Origin System offers him the decision. He and Avery are selected as guardians. Derek accepts the public title Ascending Monarch as the system invasion enters its setup phase.

Story so far - through chapter 54 (this book)

Ten guardians are chosen for the defending system, including Derek, Avery, Edgar, Marrick, Ossian, the Queen, and the twin assassins Arya and Vendra. Jace refuses selection as an invading champion, preferring to enter without command obligations. The rules establish four defending strongholds, a three-month limit, and defeat if every stronghold falls or every guardian is removed. Savannah, Ashgard, Virindal, and Eloria receive protected boundaries and three days to prepare. Ossian takes charge of Eloria with Edgar, Vanessa, Blitz, and Guild support, while Silvi stays ready to protect Savannah. When the invasion begins, Derek approaches a centaur champion near an array. At Virindal, Jace appears independently and demands information about Derek. He overwhelms the local army and the twin guardians. Arya continues attacking after disguise and is killed. Vendra yields before Jace's final blow and is removed alive. The system recognizes Virindal as conquered, giving the invaders their first stronghold and removing two guardians before Derek has finished his own opening fight.

Story so far - through chapter 62 (this book)

Derek defeats the centaur champion and forces his troops back into their protected array. The invaders regroup under Darvin and Amelia at conquered Virindal, but poor communications leave their command fragmented. Derek's allies stop two approaching armies without losing a stronghold. Ossian traps the Eloria force behind barriers while Mara disperses an incapacitating mist from Blitz, and Braxton and Avery break the Savannah army with controlled overwhelming force. Natalie organizes the prisoners and seized equipment. Elsewhere, Jace kills the lizard champion after building enough battle lust to activate a costly recovery skill, though the invader command does not initially know he is responsible. Holcomb begins restoring communications and assembling the remaining champions. Amelia is sent to remove the isolated Queen Serta. Derek sees the duel and races toward Lenderas, but Amelia defeats the queen's multiple physical bodies before he arrives. Queen Serta survives and is removed from the invasion. Amelia retreats rather than meet the approaching Ascending Monarch, leaving Derek without the confrontation he sought.

Story so far - through chapter 71 (this book)

At Eloria, Edgar accepts a nonlethal duel with the third-ranked invading champion. The champion suppresses Edgar's lightning form and defeats him, after which Derek takes the next duel and wins against the champion's uncontrolled transformed state. The champion later realizes that this fight completed his hidden advancement requirements, leaving him indebted to Derek. At Savannah, Silent Night tries to assassinate Avery, but Braxton intercepts and grievously maims her. Jace meanwhile reaches Ashgard and attacks Marrick and David Brandt after learning that Derek is the Ascending Monarch. Derek arrives before they are defeated and challenges Jace himself. Their escalating fight damages Derek's equipment and drives Jace into a dangerously overfilled battle-lust state, but Derek incapacitates him without killing him. While recovering inside Ashgard, Jace confirms that he refused the champion role and entered independently. He is Derek's former best friend from Earth, not a loyal agent of the invading command. He returns family photographs saved from Derek's ruined cabin, reconciles with him, and becomes a potential source of inside information.

Story so far - through chapter 76 (this book)

Jace explains that he killed the lizard champion Rhi and briefs Derek on the remaining enemy force. Amelia is the strongest direct combatant, Holcomb controls communications, and Trisha poses the greatest tactical danger because she can suppress an affinity across an area. Derek decides to strike only after every champion has gathered at Virindal. Jace volunteers to pose as a defeated enemy, using a deliberately shallow wound and a staged village refuge to convince Darvin and Amelia that Derek spared him after a serious fight. He mixes accurate details with selected falsehoods and agrees to help lure Derek into an ambush, while secretly arranging the reverse. Ashley scouts the captured stronghold under light-based concealment. Derek recruits Riven to disrupt the champions' communications with barriers. Once Kelvin and the final absent council fighter arrive, Jace confirms that all seven active champions are together. The invaders believe they are preparing a coordinated trap for Derek, but Derek's team now has concealment, communications control, an inside signal, and its own assault ready.

Story so far - through chapter 81 (this book)

Derek begins the Virindal operation before the champions' planned meeting. Ashley conceals Riven while he blocks communications, Silvi positions herself to transport Jace, and Jace attacks arrays to build battle lust. Derek enters the stronghold alone and immediately targets Trisha. She suppresses his spatial and void powers at severe physical cost, while Amelia restrains him and Darvin channels stored council power into a combined beam. Derek uses Void's Embrace to absorb the attack until Jace arrives at the planned moment. Jace breaks the deception and rescues him. Derek releases the armor's stored mana through the beam and kills Darvin. Silvi disarms Kuthos, Marrick forces Bria to surrender and removes the unconscious Trisha, and Derek's full abilities return. Jace fights Amelia but accepts Derek's intervention before the battle becomes lethal. Derek then defeats Amelia and briefly takes her into the void to prove she cannot survive there. Marrick captures the insect commander fleeing underground with an army. Amelia surrenders, ending the invasion and completing the defending system's requested favor. Derek remains with Silvi and his surviving allies, but forced ascension is only six months away and Alana is still beyond his reach.

How does it end? (ending)

Derek attacks the assembled champions at Virindal after Jace convinces them he remains hostile. Trisha's nullification strips away Derek's spatial and void abilities, and Darvin combines council power into a sustained beam. Jace arrives at the planned moment, allowing Derek to release the energy stored by Void's Embrace and kill Darvin. Silvi forces Kuthos to surrender, Marrick removes Bria and the unconscious Trisha, and the insect commander is captured while trying to escape underground. Amelia yields only after Derek defeats her and demonstrates that she cannot survive in the void. Her surrender ends the invasion and completes the favor requested by the defending system. Derek remains in Davin Resh with Silvi, Jace, and the surviving alliance. He is already level 251 and qualified to ascend, cannot meaningfully grow in the local system, and will be forced to leave within six months. Alana remains alive but unreachable in another system. Derek's relationship with the Universal System, Jace's future, Marrick's advancement, and the possibility of taking allies through ascension all remain unresolved.
